Oh my Lord, Yootha deserved far more dramatic roles like this than walk-ons in Steptoe & Son (not that she wasn't brilliant in those too). What a disturbing character she created in just a few moments. Fantastic writing too.
She had a supporting role in "Die, Die My Darling" that was very underwritten, but she made added to it and the drama just by her facial expressions. There was a scene in Man About The House where her on screen husband said something particularly hurtful and the look on her face was heartbreaking.
I was on holiday in Brighton and the guesthouse owner came through, quite shocked at breakfast time and told us her death had just been announced on the radio. Always loved Yootha in all her roles but this is the first time I saw this so never realised the extent of her talents until now. They certainly broke the mould when they made Miss Joyce.
Glad to see this clip back on YT. Yootha Joyce is so good in this scene it's spooky, playing a psychologically unhinged swinging door. Just the person you want to be seated next to on a trans-con flight!
The 60s were the beginning of honest, difficult communication. This random, passive aggressive conversation turning into a nightmarish threat was turning the inside out on screen. Uncomfortable but challenging.
This is the first time i've seen Joyce in a serious role and it's made me so sad that there weren't more of them. She was excellent in comedies but the acting in this scene gave me goose bumps!
yootha joyce was uncredited in this movie . by the look of this scene you would have expected her to be in a lead role . but this was her only scene in the movie .
I wish they made challenging films like this now instead of endless CGI spectacle nonsense Joyce and Bancroft so powerful together ...That scary moment when you realise the person next to you med's are wearing off....
@diddymuck I always found her to be a bit masculine but she carried it off well. She always appeared to be such a strong yet elegant and funny (comedic) woman, very sad the real truth that she was such a lonely person struggling with alcoholism. I found the way she played the character of Mildred in G & M to be my favourite.
... "the pumpkin eater" reference is to cannibalism ... they invaded into queensland from the cave of skulls mount giluwe new guinea after starving themselves to death ... and their "system" is about to do the same to us - and they did do that to us with the invasion ... "bread & dripping" ...
I wonder if she should see about receiving some estrogen probably why she is coming unhinged. My friend Bette went off of it after menopause and became quite hysterical afterward lol/
I love scenes like this. LOL!! I`m no Anne Bancroft okay. And I am age 78. But there is a woman who attends some of the same events as I who can`t stop making catty remarks about being as attractive as I. She resents the small amount of pulchritude I have been able to keep. Fact is the woman is totally unattractive and would need masses of work just to bring her up to scratch. That said she is never without some male hovering around. So I don`t know where the jealousy comes from. Just a nasty disposition I guess!
@@darkskies414 It is a weird situation (the ambivalence of the offensive character) It is a weird situation and one which most people might not get. Having been in a similar situation (the ambivalence not the looks of the other person) I thought I would share.
@@sandrashevey8252 The ignorance of some people! Quite frankly they didn't deserve a reply from you however you managed to keep your cool rather well. It was very obvious to me what you meant in your first comment. You just keep rocking your good looks girl!!! ☀️🌝🌞
She had a very short lived porn career when she was starting out. Collectors of vintage porn films value greatly her first screening: Slime Slobbering Sisters. This 1954 55min torrent of filth involved bukakke, hedge trimming, wobbing and one chocolate fountain scene that has yet to be surpassed.
I'd like to know that too because in most of her tv appearances she is wearing a star of david bangle on her right wrist and in a photo she is wearing a star of david necklace. In addition, her remains are at Golders green crematorium which is located in a city where there is a high Jewish population and opposite this crematorium is a jewish cemetery!!!!???? Great if she is Jewish but I just wonder, is she was, how did this come about?
@@darkskies414 Bancroft`s reaction. The woman is dying; not only is she dying but she`s accusing Bancroft of contributing to her death. Usually the conceived perfection of Bancroft (the makeover) is never perceptible; it is never brought to our attention. It is here. Now Yootha Joyce might have booked in for a `chin implant` the week after she finishes the film. Who knows? Who cares? What she emits as the character is a reaction to the supremacy of conceived prototypes and how/why they endanger the rest of us women who cannot compete. Doesn`t matter who directed it. The viewpoint is decidedly British of the period. They`re not letting Bancroft the Diva get away with the pretense. Maybe I should have said antifeminism rather than antisemitism. In either case, she doesn`t give a damn. She is in her own little world, her own orbit. Disgraceful! But very good. Courageous use of Bancroft. Just wonder if she realized when she signed on she was going to be shafted??!
