as a person who was brought up on the rippers patch i can remember the fear that his murders placed on families. women were scared to go out alone at night and remember this was back in the days when people didn't have mobile phones. in todays world a modern day ripper wouldn't get away with such crimes. advances in things like forensic science and dna along with cctv cameras mean anyone going around killing people would be caught easily. unfortunately in those days such things didn't exist.
I can't help but feel, had it not been for the two officers in Sheffield he would have gone on for years. The poor excuse for police officers in west Yorkshire were "CLUELESS, 9 times they had the chance to arrest him and each he was filed away as not a high enough suspect. Did they never look at the photo-fit??? It could been taken with a camera! The £5 note was linked to his work, how much more evidence did they need!!!
It was more to do with admin mistakes. They did have enough evidence to suspect more. But all the different bits of evidence were stored away on cards back then in draws. There were no computers for data storage in police stations. Everything was done manually. There were 100s of thousands of statements and reports from people and officers. The biggest blunder was when an officer actually knocked on the door of P Sutcliffe and noticed many things that pointed to him being the killer. He personally made a report and directed it to one of the officers in charge of the investigation but it never made it to him. There were too many errors in the admin side of the investigation and evidence from the same incidents were put on different cards by mistake. Clumsy hands
Whether they were prostitutes or not they did not deserve to be killed...in fact one of the victims was a 16 year old who was a part time shop assistant...hanging sutcliff would have been too good for him.
