Walk Summary
This Yorkshire 3 Peaks Walk from Horton in Ribblesdale takes in Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in a 24.6-mile walk and includes 1,610 metres of climbing.
Even though walking any of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, or Ingleborough in isolation is a satisfying walk in itself, there's one thing that many people seem to like: a challenge! The 3 Peaks of Yorkshire Walk provides that challenge.
This video takes you round the full route of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk and includes tips on parking, where to eat and drink and much more.
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk leaves Horton by Brackenbottom and then heads up along the path by the wall that passes over Brackenbottom Scar, to meet and turn left along the Pennine Way, which then climbs much more steeply to reach the summit of Pen-y-ghent, the lowest of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks at 694 metres.
From Pen-y-ghent, we descend and pass over Whitber Hill and then on towards Ribblehead and the viaduct. We walk parallel with the Settle to Carlisle railway, before leaving it to climb up to the summit of Whernside, the highest of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks at 736 metres.
From the summit of Whernside, we head down to Chapel Le Dale and pass by the Old Hill Inn, before crossing fields and through limestone outcrops before climbing Ingleborough (724 metres).
From the summit, we descend initially across Simon Fell Breast and then along the gravel and flagged path through Sulber. From here it's just a matter of crossing the final few fields and then passing through Horton in Ribblesdale train station to arrive back at the start.
How long it takes to do the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk depends upon your level of fitness and how much you have prepared and trained for the walk. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks 'challenge' is to do the walk in under 12 hours. Most reasonably fit, well-prepared walkers average between 9 and 11.5 hours to do the walk.

Simply put, this is the best video of this walk anywhere on the internet. Looking to do this challenge next week and with limited daylight hours it is useful to know exactly what to expect and where to go. This video is absolutely perfect. Amazing dedication to walk that distance and film every inch of ground. I applaud you for that!

Thanks - comments like that always very welcome 👍 TBH by the time I'd finished, my arm holding the camera was more tired than the legs! The ground round there is pretty wet at the moment, but most of the paths are decent now as you can see from the video, so no real boggy areas anymore. Enjoy the walk next week...

Absolutely the most informative and enjoyable walk I have ever viewed. 50 years+ since I completed this walk and pleased to the improvements made to assist walkers. i.e, pavers, boardwalk, etc. I now live in Australia and getting on in years and was thrilled to 'take this walk with you', brought back so many memories. Thank you again. Now subscribed, I look forward to viewing your previous walks and new postings. 🏁🚸

Thank you 🙂 I’m glad the memories came flooding back - the walk had been much improved since I did my first one, but you’ll have noticed more than me if it is 50 years + since you last did it. I filmed in almost Australian weather - one of the few days we had the sun!! Hopefully, you’ll enjoy some of the other videos…

A stunning video and a great walk. I've done the Yorkshire 3 Peaks twice in the past, but wished I'd have had this video to watch before I did it. Really enjoy your style of video and the great information that you include. Ingleborough was a bit of a killer for me last time after having already climbed Whernside and Pen-y-ghent - my knees were screaming at me before I reached the top!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed and thanks for subscribing 👍 Hopefully it brought back happy memories! My first 3 Peaks were also in the late 90's, my main memories of which were wading through deep bogs around Black Dub Moss on the section after Pen-y-ghent...thankfully the new sections of paths miss that out! It was a great day for it...we just could do with some more of the bright sunny days, so I can actually get out to do more filming in the sunshine!

Thank you, that was so informative. I'm running the Y3P fell race this year for the first time and was very interested in the changing terrain you filmed so well. I'll be going over it a few more times no doubt. All the best and keep up the good work.
@walks4all
@walks4all 4 месяца назад
Thanks - glad you found the video useful! I've a few friends who done the Y3P race in the past and when I've been to watch them I know there are at least 2 changes in the race from the route I've shown in the walk video. They start the race by leaving Horton up Horton Scar Lane (if you look at my penyghent video, I come back down Horton Scar Lane, so the route up penyghent will be that descent in reverse).So they don't go up via brackenbottom. The other main change is just after ribblehead viaduct, when you pull in alongside the railway, they turn left under a bridge at winterscales, and head directly up whernside almost in a straight line for the summit. So cutting a big corner, but making the climb much steeper. I've not been that way for quite a while, but when I last did it was more grassy/tussocky underfoot than the rest of the route, which is now mainly tracks and paths. Pretty sure route down from whernside, up ingleborough and back to horton is then as per the video and the usual 3 peaks walk.

I always check the Mountain Weather Forecast, usually several days in advance, and on the morning of my intended hike. This year I might try to do the Three Yorkshire Peaks in one day, maybe in April or May, before it starts to get too hot. I have so far hiked all three Yorkshire peaks several times individually, in both directions. Perhaps to prepare for essentially walking over 24 miles in one day, I might try to hike two of the Three Yorkshire Peaks in one day, before I attempt all three in one day. Have you any good advice for me on how to prepare for hiking all three in one day. I live near Hebden Bridge, so takes me at most about an hour and a half to drive to one of the starting points. I have free time, so could hike during the week, when it might be less busy, as well as at weekends. I am a reasonably fit and healthy lady, currently 65years old&/young! I usually hike alone...@@walks4all
@walks4all
@walks4all 5 месяцев назад
Apologies for the very slow reply...I've been away this past week. Having hiked all 3 individually is a great start, as you will know most of the route, apart from maybe the stretch from Pen-y-ghent to Ribblehead. In the main it is just a case of building up distance and maybe as you say trying 2 first. I've parked at Ribblehead and done Whernside and then on to Ingleborough using the 3 peaks route, and then returned over Simon and Park Fell to head back to Ribblehead. I find May, June and September as teh best times for doing it. I am, albeit a little slowly, putting together a 3 Peaks Guide, that will include training etc. for the website, which hopefully should be complete in about 3 weeks time. Once it is I'll reply again so you can donwload it. Whatever time of life...it is always years young 🙂

@walks4all 2 месяца назад
Glad you liked the format...and that it brought back memories fo the race...not sure whether they'd be good or bad ones by the time you reached pen-y-ghent! I read the reports on this year's race, walking it is a great achivement, but doing it in those sort of times that you do it in is phenomenal.

Thank you for the wonderful video. It brought back some memories of when I did this walk 25 years ago. I feel I have some unfinished business with it though as I didn't complete it... I got off Whernside and I had absolutely nothing left in the tank at all ; spoke to some folks in the pub on the main road before Ingleborough and they advised me that in that state, the steep climb wouldn't be a good idea, so I walked back along the road into Horton. Will *definitely* return one day to do the entire loop in full.
@walks4all
@walks4all 4 месяца назад
Glad you enjoyed the video! It is a shame you didn't manage the whole 3 Peals walk last time after getting so far, but from when I first did it wading through bogs between Pen-y-ghent and Whernside, the paths are now much improved, and the walking along that section is far less tiring. So when you next do it, that early part of the walk will feel a lot easier. With the walk back to Horton and how far you got, you probably actually did more distance that day than the 3 Peaks walk...good luck for the next one.

@all Not sure if anyone else has asked at all - but do you plan on releasing any of these videos unedited, without speeding up between gates, etc? I'm probably not the only person who would love to watch them in "real time".
@walks4all
@walks4all 4 месяца назад
A few people have asked that and for just the walk, no narration. It is something I am planning to do for some of the walks going forward. Due to the way I have filmed the videos so far, I can't get real time versions from them, but I now have a way of doing it, so am planning to do some going forward. I've filmed the next couple already, so it'll probably be in April when I start releasing a real time version as well as the speeded up versions.

As someone not used to scrambles, and with basophobia, I attempted this recently and in hindsight it wasn't so bad. Fortunately i was amongst other walkers during the ascent so watching what they do certainly helped. I wouldn't like to try this as a descent
@walks4all
@walks4all 9 месяцев назад
I must admit I wasn't sure was basophobia was, but on a quick google I now know that it is a fear of falling. I've a few friends that are acrophobic, but I hadn't come across basophobia before. That's a great achivement, certainly in my eyes, if you've completed it and suffer from it. I think as you say doing it this way round enables the Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough short scrambles to be done on the way up, rather than if done in reverse, they would be that much harder getting down them.

Fantastic video, we're looking to do this when the weather picks up in the next few weeks, we did the Edale skyline a few months back would you say this is similar in terms of difficulty?
@walks4all
@walks4all 3 месяца назад
Thanks - glad you enjoyed the video. It is quite a few years since I did the Edale skyline and I think there are a couple of variations of it. I think the one I did was approx 20 miles and about 1100m of climbing. So, on distance and climb alone the 3 Peaks is a little harder with an extra 4 miles and approx 400m more climbing. That said the 3 Peaks paths are much improved now over what they used to be, so the walk itself is mainly all on good ground and you get a good 'rest' between hills. The main difference will probably be that the edale skyline is more 'undulating', whereas the 3 Peaks climbing is really all crammed into 3 shortish sections going up each one. Most people find the steep climb up Ingleborough towards the end of the 3 Peaks tiring as a long way into the walk. Paths and signage are easy to follow on the 3 Peaks, the only 2 slight areas where more navigation could be requiured if all in low cloud, are a short section towards the top of penyghent and on the top of Ingleborough. The top of Ingleborough is where most people who 'get lost' go wrong in bad visibility. If I'm not videoing, the 3 Peaks is generally about 8 hours for me, I think the Edale skyline was just under 7 hours, so I'd maybe allow an extra 1.5 hours on top of your skyline time, but if you managed that ok, you should be fine doing the 3 Peaks. Becasue of the length of the walk and different fitness levels of the people doing it, there is quite a large spread in times taken to walk it, but most people do it in 8.5-11.5 hours.

@walks4all
@walks4all Месяц назад
Thanks - glad you enjoyed 👍 For the initial walk I set off about 6.30am finishing about 3.30pm. This was midweek which is why most of it is quiet. I realised that night some sections weren’t great as I took directly into the sun, so I went back the next day and did Pen-Y-Ghent and a few other bits again, this time setting off in the afternoon, which is why the start looks busier. I’m prob a little faster than average walking hills, but if I push on, it generally takes me about 8 hours. Most reasonably fit people who have done a reasonable amount of training take between 8-11 hours to do it. I hope that helps in your planning if you are doing it…

It was last July pre school holidays. Very early start. I can’t remember which day but it was midweek. There is a section on the ydnp website for anyone organising an event to register their event. Not everyone does, but I just avoided the days when I could see lots of people were planning to walk it. The penyghent section I did again the day after so I had the sun behind me…

I’m attempting this in June and am low key terrified. Partly that I won’t have the proper layers and will be cold the entire time (if not also wet) and that I won’t get adequate training. I live in a very flat city and it isn’t always possible for me to travel to hilly places on my days off due to other commitments. I can do long flat walks with weight, but no hills. The ascents are scaring me.
@walks4all
@walks4all 4 месяца назад
Hi, I would hope by June the current cold and wet weather will have long since gone! June is a great time to do the walk, as the days are much longer giving you much more daylight in which to complete the walk safely. You should not need too many layers in June, and if you are lucky and get a warm, sunny day, then t-shirts with a fleece for the summits may be all you need. I would always check the weather a couple of days before and then again the night before, so you can take whatever clothing you think will be necessary. I would always have a waterproof jacket in my rucksack even on dry days, as if you are cold, it can keep the wind out. If you can do long, flat walks, especially maybe building up to around 20 miles on the flat, carrying some weight in your rucksack, that will defeinately help with preparations. But, walking hills on uneven surfaces is different than the flat, so I would, as much as time permits, just try to get to any local hills, to get some ups and downs in. If you are a member of a gym, the stairclimber machine or the stepper can help build the muscles you will use walking up the hills...unfortunately they cannot repliacte the downhill walking.With the long days, you can take your time getting up the ascents. I am currently putting together a 3 Peaks Guide, which will include training, which I hope to have complete by mid April and will be available free on the website.
