We visit Yorkshire in winter to spend four days hiking the 127 kilometres of the Wolds Way. Accommodation, well of course we use the opportunity to test our winter gear and wild camp for three nights. This is the second video in a series of two.
(Please help the channel, donate a coffee here } ko-fi.com/amblingtrails)
Previously, we had started at Hessle at the official start place which is shadowed by the structure of the Humber Bridge. From here we move in a northern direction, passing through a number of villages and various landmarks. In the open countryside we often travel through ancient mature woodlands and deep dales.
Due to the shorten days of winter we often see the sunrise and sunset and manage to capture some dramatic imagines across the landscape.
Winter conditions are often very cold and wet and hence the rucksack load was significant more than normal however, this ensured we stayed warm and dry.
This video is the second video in a series of two and depicts the journey from just over hallway near Fridaythorpe, to the finish on the north east coast at Filey.

I too loved the old church and Christmas tree. The steep tunnel too. I do miss the English countryside. Thanks for taking me back for a hike.😊❤

Have really enjoyed this, and continue to admire your fortitude wild camping your way through the winter months. The Wolds are very impressive - such pronounced valleys.

I did the YWW with my brother in 2022 & that rope wasn't there on the steep climb after Wintringham. Never looks steep on camera....I was on my hands and knees scrambling up it!
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails 7 месяцев назад
Ha, you’re totally right, could not really convey how steep it was. And it was a bit strange having a hand rail with gaps. I was certainly nearly on my hands and knees as well. Thanks for watching and I enjoyed your observation. Cheers

Really good effort doing it in 4 days. I agree with you about the amount of steep ascents on the trail; it’s not to be underestimated. All things considered those last two days didn’t look too bad underfoot considering the amount of rain we’ve had in the last two months.

Yes, overall I think this trail more than most copes well with the winter conditions. Impressed with the signage as welll, overall a great trail which surprised me how good it was, totally think it's underrated.

I second skebins observation regarding the rope on the climb up to the caravan and camping site after Wintringham. I’ve not seen that so must be quite new. What next, steps😂. I told you it wasn’t flat Nigel but it is a good one. Well done on a cracking record of your hike.

Thanks Stu, I’m still amazed how hilly it was, not sure I’m totally recovered😅 Very impressed with that trail and the signage was outstanding. Not sure what next, possibly a day hike, all this rain at the moment is not helpful! Cheers

@@AmblingTrails I agree about the rain, though I have been willing the new tent to arrive as it be a great first pitch if it was still throwing it down. 😂

That steep climb looked almost as bad as the multiple murderous steps up & down the Welsh Coast Path or the climb up the road from Lower Fishguard to Upper Fishguard with an 18Kg backpack...almost.😁

Wow, that truly sounds like punishment and we do this for fun 😅Enjoyed the comment and thanks for the watch.

It's my own silly fault for carrying such a absurd pack weight but when I do these kind of walks I tend to go for weeks at a time so I do need to carry more stuff than yourself.
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails 7 месяцев назад
Totally understand, impressed you managed lower to higher Fishguard with that weight. Cheers

Very atmospheric Nigel. I enjoyed these 2 videos covering the YWW, and I do still want to walk it. I'm currently contemplating a return to the U.K., possibly in the latter half of 2025 (if I can train my back to handle another extended walking holiday) and, if so, will likely include this walk as part of a much longer itinerary. If I do return, and you are there at the time, I'll touch base to see if you'd be interested in meeting up, and perhaps joining me for a trail or two. I'm also interested to hear that your base weight is 8.5kg - I think I could manage that, as I currently carry at least 5kg with my day pack, but I'm not sure about my ability to move all that well after sleeping on the ground overnight. I've used B&Bs, hostels and bunkhouses on my previous walking holidays (with baggage transfers for the larger pack), but camping could be attractive to keep costs down - I think I need to do some test walks with overnight camping here in NZ to see how I would manage. Anyway, keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video adventure.

Glad you enjoyed the series, and as it happens I would be interested in a non winter hike of the YWW, so it would be great to meet up to do that and possibly other trails. Obviously, you would save a lot of weight by not camping, suspect that would take your base close to 5kg. Thanks for the comment, always an interesting read. Cheers

@@AmblingTrails Nigel, if you are interested (or very bored) you can check out what I had planned on doing last year (that never actually happened) through this post on my blog - ramblingryk.blogspot.com/2023/03/uk-walking-holiday-itineraries.html If/when I return to the U.K., I'd likely complete a few of those paths I didn't get to (but with some possible substitutions, as there are some other trails I'm keen on, such as the Pennine Bridleway and Pembrokeshire Coastal Path). Cheers, Ryk.

A part of the country we’ve not walked so we were really interested to see what it had to offer. Did you have much of a journey to get to the start and from the finish? Really enjoyed both videos and impressed by your wild camping at this time of the year. Thanks for taking us along on this one Nigel.
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails 6 месяцев назад
Hi the next adventure, it was certainly a part of the country that surprised me and I'm sure it will be even better in other parts of the year, so definitely should be on your list of 'possibles'. There is a railway station at Hessle, which is on the main line into Hull. The station is literally 5 - 10 minutes from the start. The finish at Filey also has a station but you literally walk past it on the trail and then have to walk back to catch the trail, about 2km. Although there are stations for the start and finish I did find getting to and returning from those places by rail was quite awkward timetable wise, so depending where you are travelling from might need to factor in 'travel' days. However, I think you will be rewarded by an excellent adventure, definitely one of my favourites now and I will possibly repeat it in the warmer months. Hope that helps, and happy to answer any further queries. Nigel

Thank you so much for all that detail. We will add it to our list that’s for sure. Looking forward to drier, warmer, longer days now.

Brilliant! Doing this in a couple of weeks. Do you think hammock campig is doable on this trail?
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails 4 месяца назад
Must admit, hammock camping is not my area of expertise, so difficult for me to comment. From memory, whilst possible in some places not sure if there would be sufficient woods for every night. Apologies that I can’t be more certain. Hope it works out, Cheers

Lovely video of an area I’ve not done any walking in, am guessing that a month earlier it would have been a lot drier under foot. Just wondering what tent you were using 😊
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment, yep earlier in the year would have been less boggy but under the circumstances it was not to bad. The tent is the single skin Sigma S10, a link here if your curious about the tent ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oKnrYx9Ija0.html , cheers Nigel
