Below is the English translation of the conversation:
S.A: Good evening, father.
B.S.A: Oh, this lad, you're welcome. May you be elevated.
S.A: You'll live long sir. They're all fine sir.
B.S.A: Amen. May you also live long and well. You won't be miserable in life! You and your young ones will live long and well.
S.A: Amen.
B.S.A: You're here again?
S.A: Yes, baba. You can bear witness that God has endowed me with wisdom.
B.S.A: That's right, and may you never become foolish.
S.A: Amen. It came to my heart to render academic assistance to the children in our village.
B.S.A; That's right. You informed me. You mentioned that you'd love them also to become bright in their studies, and that's why you assist them all around the household. And I'm not sure you even collect money.
S.A: I don't, because it is laid in my heart to do so, and I derive joy in doing so. However, Father, you're the one who says, "Gold is sold only to the one who knows its worth".
B.S.A: That's right.
S.A: I'm not being appreciated at all; rather, another person takes all the credit, and if the arms cannot be swayed, it would rather be put on the head.
B.S.A: Our fathers would say so. They say this when they're fed up with an issue.
S.A: I'm fed up, baba. I'm no longer interested.
B.S.A: Oh! I understand your concern, and it's justified because our fathers would often say singing someone's praise encourages them to do more.
If a man holds an egg in his right hand and holds...in his left hand and walks backwards to Iseyin town, those who would praise him would praise him, while there will be also those who would not.
Have you not heard what our fathers would say, "We don't praise the quitter. The beginners of a task are not the real workers except those who endure to the end. And what I know is that the end of a thing is better than its beginning.
You're the one who said the Lord put this issue in your heart. Do not forget that your proficiency will be tested at your duty post. You should understand that once we get to our duty posts, it calls for responsibility.
It's not you, it's God. It wasn't what you just desired to do, it was God who put it in your heart to do.
Some people did not desire to preach the gospel, but the Lord put the desire in them. Hence, the Bible says the snake does not bite without enchantment.
The pestle is enough to cause havoc on a man without any charm attached to it. The snake does not need to be compelled for it to strike. It knows too well that it is its duty; it's its nature to bite.
It's God who has sent you this, I don't want you to be trivial with it.
The Yorubas use the proverb that we do not praise a quitter to encourage someone who is becoming weary at work or someone found of not completing his duty or not doing his work adequately.
If a man goes to the farm and fails to put out the fire properly, which could set the whole farm ablaze, the Yorubas would say it is not done adequately.
This proverb is used to warn or encourage those who love to do such negligent work.
We do not praise the quitter, those who begin a task are not the actual labourers but those who endure to the end. That's what the Bible itself says.
I also want you to know that the Bible says, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom". That's in the book of Ecclesiastes 9 verse 10.
Jesus also said, "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work".
I wouldn't know what brought you to this work you're doing but I think it is the Lord who has put it in your heart to do. If truly it's the Lord, I'd suggest you put at it.
If you show kindness to a fair man, a dark man may be the one to repay you. Listen to me; those you think do not know your worth and give others the praise you deserve will see the rewards God will give to you.
The night comes when no one can work. This particular one that the Lord has given to you, I'd counsel that you give it rightly. There is a season and time to all things, our fathers would say no one beckons on the god of thunder during summer.
You should resume your duty now before the time expires because we do not praise a quitter. The shining sun is still enough to dry clothes. The day is fast ending, the sun is almost setting.
How long will it take for you to guide these young kids to finish their studies and when they become well-meaning people, God will put your interest in their hearts to remember you who laboured over them and taught them all they know. Then* you'd see that the honour of that day will surpass the present.
My counsel to you is that whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning, knowledge nor wisdom.
As you wake this morning, you're like wax, melting away gradually, like. . .
