You’ll Have This Moment As A BJJ White Belt ( If You Keep Training )

How can you catch up to the people in front of you in BJJ as a white belt? How do you stick it out in training when you get frustrating because nothing is working?
These are the questions our friend Jeff asked concerning his BJJ training.
He's being doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for about 2 months and says everyone in his gym is either a 2 stripe white belt or above. No matter what he does, he just continues to get smashed.
Getting smashed into the mat as a white belt in Brazilian Jiu jitsu is one of the most frustrating things in BJJ.
It's fun at first but it becomes aggravating when you don't feel like you're not making progress. You just feel stuck.
In the video I share a story from my personal BJJ journey about how I got beat on for nearly 6 months of my BJJ training. Then eventually things started to "click" and I started to make noticeable progress.
This turned Brazilian Jiu-jitsu into something completely different.
If you're someone who is experienced a rough patch in BJJ. Even if you're not a white belt. Watch the video and see if you're able to take some of the advice and apply to your situation and avoid getting frustrated, or at least have a way to work through it.
Thanks for watching! I hope the video helps!

Back when I was a white belt, a high brown belt once told me (after murdering me), "Don't compare yourself to me. Compare yourself to where you were six months ago."...best jiu jitsu advice I ever received. My entire outlook changed. Thanks Chewy, good to hear those same sentiments again.

After I got my bluebelt my training has gone down to almost non existing and it sucks. A few weeks after I got the belt I moved to a new town to study and did not have time first semester. Then I got back to training around x-mas time and trained a good amount until 16. jan. That day I tore my knee during training and I have been out sins. I WANT BACK ON THE MATS SO BAD. I will not let the blue belt blues get me. Blue are the belt where most people quit.

jiu jitsu is like the alphabet, need to learn the fundamentals first (letters) to eventually put them together into words(blue belt), which will then let you make sentences(purple), which will let you move up to paragraphs(brown), and then finally write a story as a black belt :) The way I look improving.

I have the opinion that the higher belts job is to NOT smash the white belts. Even as a 2 stripe white belt, when I roll with someone who's not as good as I am I relax, try new things, and most important of all, I actually let them beat me. I give them opportunities to submit, sweep, escape, pass, and I even let hen go if they are being too stubborn to tap. Sometimes, if they are struggling to see the opening, I will tell them what to do. As they get better I take it more seriously, but still I keep it light engaging. I think this method improves my jiujitsu as well. I get to slow down and be more aware of how my opponent can gain an advantage over me. I think it's a real win-win.

I do smash them at times. It's a learning moment. Example: Side control is a position in which students and even higher belts are more focused on base by having their knees close to their opponents body. For the most, part that is wrong. You should have your body as close to the mat as possible with only 1 knee near your opponents body, crushing the life out of his lungs. Sometimes I have to demonstrate how that feels. That's only one example. Obviously, at times, I let him run away and other times coach them to do so. The thing is, too a white belt, it will feel like he is getting crushed relentlessly.

Jonathan Mendiola I think a good balance is best. I’m a fresh white belt and the more experienced people at my gym are awesome and very helpful, but I also like to feel what it’s like to get smashed as well. It can be discouraging but it gives me a glimpse of how much there is to learn and it makes me want to be better.

I'm a 27 year old female and started Muay Thai at my local MMA gym.. After class was the BJJ foundations class and I would always stay after Muay Thai and stretch/watch the class.. I was intrigued, but super intimidated... doesn't help the class is usually all males, with the occasional one female. Everyone seemed really good and knew what they were doing. I asked about the class to the owner/trainer and he told me when the classes were and that I should come. I kept making lame excuses as to why I would try it "later". Finally last week after Muay Thai, I was once again stretching, watching the BJJ class warm up, and my trainer came up to me and ask me again..when I was going to try the class. I once again made up some excuse as to why I couldn't...I'm too tired after Muay Thai, too sweaty, didnt have a Gi and most importantly to me, no one seemed beginner enough for me and I would be the odd one out of the class. He told me to get up, got an extra Gi, and said "everyone has to start somewhere, they were all beginners too".. so I did my first class paired up with my trainer. It was AMAZING! I am hooked! such a confidence booster. Love the atmosphere that everyone is there to help out and help you improve.

I'm getting my face smashed in 5 days a week by blue and purple belts but they all tell me the same thing. Every week they tell me I'm improving and they encourage me to keep it up. I still haven't had my aha moment where everything clicks but I know just showing up is half the battle. Thanks for the encouragement.

Keep it up. What's helped me get through my journey is "flow rolling". This is awesome because it allows you tweak and see things you may not have seen if you or the person you're rolling with, is smashing each other. This is especially useful when working with higher belts than yourself. Run it by your next rolling partners. Hope it helps
@warriorfire8103

That's usually the funny thing. Other people notice your progress more then you do sometimes. It be little things too. "hmm that was lot harder to get off on him, oh he's moving better, hey he's not getting gassed out as quickly, he stays clam now, oh that was a little dangerous but he almost got me" For me personally meditation and doing my own home study 15 minutes every morning made the difference, just recalling the techniques, rolling and moving my body on the floor.

NappaTheProducer - My coach pulled me aside last week and said the exact same thing. He said we only focus on what we're doing wrong and we think everyone only sees what we see. He said that I was doing really good and he doesn't give empty compliments. He also said something that really put things into perspective for me. He said BJJ is unique in that it's one combat sport where experience and rank really matter. So he called me up in front of the class this week and gave me a stripe on my white belt. I know it's not much but it was a pretty awesome feeling. BJJ is awesome!!!

Man, I needed to hear this. At 56 I'm 6 months in, feeling exactly like the guy who wrote in. "At what point do you admit you don't have what it takes and walk away" is a question I've asked myself. It's hard being the old man in a younger man's sport, but this video is spot on. Just show up. Do it. Yeah, I know I'll be the nail for a while, not the hammer, but yes, it's worth the challenge. Personal growth mentally and physically. I suspect I'll be watching this video several times.

As a white belt, I am reflecting on my best night of training ever. For the first time, I was able to roll. Truly roll. I was partnered up with a purple belt, and we just went at it at about 50%. Just flowing from one position to another. It was an experience that was so very exciting and impacting. I talked allot with the guy after class about the roll. He was very positive with me and said that I WAS hitting the sweeps and the submissions (not that I submitted him, he just moved out and we were on to the next progression of moves). I say this as someone that trained for 3 years (10 years ago ) and used to be very aggressive. Maybe it is my age now (43) vs being 33. Maybe it was having taken a week off, and having a clear head. Whatever it was, it was like a drug and I want more of it. The rest of the night was incredible. My last roll was with another white belt...back to the aggressive style of rolling. But I was able to stay relaxed and for the first time, hit an arm bar without THINKING about the arm bar. It was just there when he moved. It was truly effortless. Flowing. Crazy cool stuff. I really needed both those rolls. I have been training hard 5x a week in the smaller 11am class, with mostly upper belts, feeling like nothing has been sticking.

I am one of only two white belts. Been at it 4 months. Everyone else are all brown belts and one blue belt. I get smashed 3 x a week. I am also a retired marine who is missing a left foot. Every roll I learn something new. I'm just gonna keep at it until the muscle memory and experience builds up. I will never quit!!! Last week I had my first take down on a brown belt. The feeling it gave me was amazing. Little moments like that are reassuring.

I needed this advice back in 2010. Two or two and a half months in I wanted to quit. I was lucky that a co-worker convinced me to stay. He told me to learn on my own and to think of my pride when rolling. After three months I finally tapped out my first training partner. That was the moment that gave me confidence to keep going and having fun.

Mr.Mask Maker There's a point when you have to join the ranks and be put to the grinder like the rest of us. But it's not in the very beginning. You wouldn't take a new recruit with no training and send them to the front. Likewise, there's no reason to take a brand new guy and put them straight to the grind of full on rolling and training.
@mr.maskmaker6609
@mr.maskmaker6609 7 лет назад
Chewjitsu Yeah the point it with new people you want to hook them so you want to show some skill so they think "shit this guy is good i wanna learn what he knows" but not hurt them or make them think "shit I'm no good at this I'm gonna end up getting hurt before i can learn anything" So Important to getting and keeping students I taught wing chun for a bit but i stopped because the other instructor was trying the "classroom wing chun" i was teaching a no bullshit fighting version with loads of sparring and drilling and he was all forms and steps which in my opinion is bullshit for self defense so I stopped because i didn't wanna teach self defense with a guy that has never fought and don't know shit to teenagers because they would end up getting hurt

I also think focusing on small victories can help a lot. If someone is just flat out better than you, they *should* beat you while rolling. So accept that and give yourself a goal that isn't "beat this guy". Maybe work on an escape. Your partner might pass your guard and put you in side control, so escape. Who cares if he takes your back after or passes your guard again? you escaped. Next time you can add another small goal. eventually your small victories will add up and just be you rolling.

That's exactly what I keep telling new guys. You got to appreciate small victories. I was truly happy the first time I kept the toughest blue belt of my gym from submit me. Last week I couldn't help smiling after sweeping a black belt friend, sure I got smashed afterwards, but I enjoyed.
@aucaps2843
@aucaps2843 7 лет назад
Agree with this. I'm just starting out and have also found that asking for something specific from my training partners also helps, especially as they are more experienced. Maybe before you start rolling express to your partner that you would like to try a certain escape or pass that you worked on in class. It lets them know to apply the "right amount of pressure" to make you work for your goal, but still experience enough success to apply it. Then as you get better at it, they can scale up the pressure instead of smashing you into a mat the whole time. Communicating this before you start can take some of the edge off of trying to impress others and turns it into a better training situation. It gives them an opportunity to teach, which turns them into your ally instead of your opponent. Then, when you do have success they have some pride in it also.

Yes! Awesome video. I remember I was driven to tears once when I was starting out. I showed up to class once and got smashed and tapped by everyone, including NEWER people. I had a "is this really for me?" moment. But what happened was eventually more newer people joined the gym. Now, that does not mean it was open season for me to smash them for an ego boost, not at all, BUT what it did was allow me to practice, for example, sweeps that I couldn't do with the higher belts. I found I was able to control "big/muscle" new guys (who tend to try and muscle everything) I was able to control them using jiujitsu then that a-ha moment. I WAS learning. Practice my defense with higher belts, practice offense with newer guys (even if it means tapped by them). ...That was 2 years ago and I'm now a Blue headed to my 9th tournament!

I'm about 8 months in to my journey in bjj. I only go to about 2-3 classes a week right now. In my minimal free time, I watch YT vids. It wasn't until the last few classes that I've finally felt like I'm able to defend against higher belts, as well as submit them. I've never been discouraged or ever thought of quitting but the point is, these AHA moments are real and boy does it remotivate you when you get them. To my fellow white belts out there, keep rolling!

i love the struggle of learning BJJ! for me it's reflective of life. don't wanna wake up? don't wanna roll? well tough, it's life. nothing in life is easy and I love how challenging BJJ is! but at the same time if I train every day I actually can see tangible physical results, unlike other struggles in life where the results aren't as obvious (i.e when you try to start up a business, the daily uncertainties and the rewards are very long term) if you just show up in life/or class, that's a win already. i actually got into BJJ when i was feeling sad/depressed. going to class 2X a day was the only thing that got me out of bed during that rough time, otherwise I would've never gotten out of bed. and I wouldn't ever really tap because I really liked the feeling of getting choked haha it made me feel alive, also the sparring made me feel like I was fighting for my life too I actually think BJJ has changed my life haha it's so fun and challenging, so I'm going to focus on training BJJ around the world and film it on my channel :D

When I started jiujistu about 6 months ago I accepted I would never win without a higher belt letting me, for awhile. But I’ve been going 5-6 days a week and people that have been going for a year, I’m beating, the higher belts that took the time to help me, I’m now able to survive those matches with them. The reason I got better so much faster is I constantly asked questions during flow rolls with higher belts, I have one purple belt girl that loves drilling with me after class at least three days a week. You put the time and effort into it, you’ll reap the rewards of your body adapting. But also make friends. Don’t see the people at your gym as opponents, but as your team. They help you, you help them. I had a girl that couldn’t get out of my guard no matter what she would do, instead of letting her suffer, I showed her ways to avoid getting stuck in my guard. Now she’s feeling confident rolling with me again and we can continue to challenge each other as well as get better.

I actually needed this. The fact I am back in BJJ again, and realizing I have been away from it for 7 years and originally really starting out in No-Gi with a wrestling background, and then thrown in the Gi game (Literally. I started doing Gi during a tournament after winning one of the No-Gi tournaments back in 2009) and now that I am officially back in it again, and seeing my friends all being purple, Brown or even Black Belts, I've been feeling like i need to catch up and it has been my drive not to mention getting back in competitions again (which I do really look forward too). I have been getting frustrated with what I've lost and getting worked but I've been consistent. So keeping what was said in this video, i'm not going to chase my friends already ahead. I have my friends telling now to let it all start to click again. Thank you for this. I just found this page tonight randomly, and because of this, I am subscribing. Thank you.

That's the way it is. I've been training for about 6 months now, at the start getting smashed. I just learnt to hang on and not get submitted. Eventually I became hard to tap and I've been getting into really good positions although not really tapping much people. my defence is my main focus right now.

I have been training for 2 and a half months. Things are starting to come together a lot more smoothly, i can see it in my rolling. Im not getting smashed like before, my defense is better, and i catch a few submissions of my own. I think the more i got smashed, the more i wanted to find a way to stop it, so i just trained harder and trained more.

When I started training bjj it wasn't that bad but I got really fortunate. About 2 months into training my instructor who was a black belt and 30 years old back then, and he made me his training partner. Then one of my best friends joined and it was us 3. So I really got my face smashed for years, and I made everything I had to survive. After some years it would take him atleast 15 min to submit me, and That was when I was a blue belt. So my advice is really cherish the oportunities to train with higher belts and if you have the oportunity to be in a rolling group of graduated students then stick to them and be there every day on time and they will really apreciate your interest and will help you out. My buddy is a black belt know and Just won a NAGA championship and now I train with him.

Thanks for this vid man. I am a new blue belt and found this vid extremely helpful still. I am trying to expand my game (esp my open and closed guard games) and obviously getting passed a ton. I am fighting the temptation to just go back to what I know I am good at. I am fighting my ego but at least I am aware of this fact thanks to a lot of the posts you and others have graciously shared on this topic both directly and indirectly. You sir are doing a great service for BJJ. Thanks. Oss.

This is true for almost anything in life - Seth Godin calls it "The Dip". Just keep doing the work, keep at it and eventually you'll improve. Be humble - there are no shortcuts in life, you have to do the work, again and again. You have to suck it up. Training with people that are better than you is perfect - they will drag you up to their level.

I got smashed for the first 6 months too. And being 65kg/140ish pounds at 5'9", everyone else was bigger than me. I didn't actually start noticing my progress untill a year in. That's when I'd start tapping other white belts out consistently. 3 years on and I've made huge improvements. The first 6 months really is the hardest.

BJJ is a lot about getting comfortable in uncomfortable positions/situations, so stick out the uncomfortable period you're in until you become comfortable, and finally, you'll become more than comfortable. For some, there are moments where everything just clicks, and you make progress, and for some, it's steady incremental progress. Either way, you're going to make progress over "time".

any tips on how to structure training to reach that aha moment as fast as you can? i go to 4 classes a week (1.5 hours), 2 are beginner classes and 2 are mixed ability classes. the beginner one involves drilling a few specific techniques for 30-45 mins or so, then the rest is sparring where we try and secure a sweep/guard pass/submission. the mixed ability ones are pretty much just constant rolling for 1.5 hours. i find i learn a lot from getting smashed by blue belts.
