can wong fu talk about "bao" in an upcoming lunch break? the animated short before "incredibles 2", not the food item (though i guess that's okay too since phil likes them.) a lot of asian americans and non-asian americans really resonated with it, while there were a couple who didn't get it and didn't like it. what do you think?

6:18 Literally my parents. They spent so much money to make sure I knew how to play piano well, singing in choirs and solo etc. When I got to college, I was going to do nursing, but a week before college started, I decided to become a music major. My mom gave me such a hard time all throughout college, but I got through it. So HA, MOM. lol

I always felt like a "bad asian" as an adoptee with a white family. It was really interesting seeing the differences between me and my 4th generation friend. We both felt like "bad asians" but in very different ways. It was odd in college when people didn't know I was adopted. Before it had acted as almost a disclaimer so my "bad asian" habits were excused.

Whoa, ridiculous standards! Asian Americans are immediately assumed to be bilingual, music instrument players, academically excelling, and competitive parents. Asians are stereotyped as somehow more likely to be well-off. But, it only sterilize empathy for multicultural bonding and community building. The Yappie project is so important for many multiracial, multicultural communities. Thank you, Wong Fu, for creating the conversation around stereotypes with such care, kindness, and compassion for the multifaceted lives we all live in!
@ft9kop
@ft9kop 6 лет назад
I don't agree with the Asians stereotyped as being well off. In my college, a large public urban university, there's so many asians living in ghettos and high crime areas. Most work part time to afford college. the only well off ones are the international students.

I'm a Hmong descendant and I play a lot of instruments, but I play cello now.(2 years for now), but I chose to do musical things because my family was full of music(aka all my family has played a music instruments or does things with music). This episode was so interesting!! It was fascinating hearing about the American school system, lol in my country and our education system an A for us is the lowest grade 😂 I’m definitely on the less better side for sure as an Asian. I mean to be honest I was brought up more western like than the true Asian style, but now that I’m older I do have more interest in my ethnicity. I like having deliciously good food to eat, I’ve never had stuff like Mac and cheese or pasta ever hahaha

Growing up, I love dimsum. Most of the time, we went only as our immediate family so we mostly focus on eating the whole time. I eat most dishes b/c they taught me the value of not wasting food even if I pick out peppers here and there - also variety is fun. I also took it upon myself to practice and learn more Chinese (a lot of it is self-practice). My written Chinese isn't great, but I am the best at Chinese-English translations among my cousins/sister in the US. I felt obligated to do so to help out the older family members who do not speak English well. I was never really pressured by my parents to excel at anything, most of the time we just worked at the restaurant and everything else is self-motivation. They mostly gave me high-fives for achievements like straight-As which worked for me. If I get too stressed, they tell me to relax and not work so hard - as long as I try my best, that's all they ask for :)

If I were to compare Asian stereotypes in the past to Asian stereotypes now, I would say they're mostly the same. The foundation of being a well rounded student in school still applies, but unlike the past, the Asian stereotypes now are more relaxed in a sense that Tiger parents are relaxing a bit more. With today's media, I feel like the stereotype of being nerdy and smart still is somewhat applied, but there are additional aspects to the stereotype like being "badass" like being able to rap, sing, dance or being artistic. its actually super cool to see the development of stereotypes go into a more modern sense !! hfuhuiewhgaw p.s. can't wait for more Yappie episodes! I'm trying to get my hands on Yappie merch as well! Keep doing well Wong Fu!

As a Filipino, we typically have a stereotype that we can sing or dance, or both lmao. But I can do neither 😂😅 I definitely did play the piano & violin when I was younger !!! But piano only lasted me like a year bc my mom forced me, but I did enjoy violin for a couple years but I stopped by high school bc I was more involved in like student government lol. Alsoo, most Filipinos end up being nurses, but here I am as a graphic design major in college lmao.

I’ve always been a good Asian, but with an independent streak. It made for an interesting combination, haha. I excelled in school, did a bunch of music (piano), did art, danced, got into a top school and graduated top of my class. I speak, read, and write Mandarin fluently and all I really know how to cook is Chinese food. But I butt heads with my parents a lot and I’ve always liked to do my own thing. I really hate feeling boxed in. I’m getting a master’s in social work which definitely confuses my parents’ friends. I feel like on paper I’m a good Asian but inside I’m a “bad” Asian, or what I would say an Asian looking out for myself. Certainly I’m happy that it’s becoming more acceptable for Asian Americans to live more varied lives =)

I only got one C during my last semester of high school because calculus was so freaking hard. My brothers and I joined band and learned trombone, trumpet, and saxophone. We all learned guitar for fun. They went into art while I became a civil engineer. So in a way we still followed the Asian route, just not too stereotypical.

I mean the same would go for any culture. Just because I don't like tres leches cake or molé, doesn't mean I'm less Mexican! Lol
@Xcxc13
@Xcxc13 6 лет назад
I'm Mexican and my boyfriend is an ABC but even though he's the first asian guy I dated I was still familiar with the 626 culture since I was a hostess in Din Tai Fung, and my friend who was taiwanese informed me about what ABG, ABC, meant and told me about the asian gangs. One thing though I noticed is that more asian guys (bf incl) used the word "homie" than my latino friends (since it's a chicano word) and I found that kind of cute since I was thinking "we have more in common" with the exception of the parents (who always comment about my dark skin and tell me their skin is beautiful and white, yet they already are thinking about how they want "the baby" to come out with my eyes (hazel) but I tell them dark brown eyes are nice (and much less sensitive to light) it's just really interesting. The recent thing I have noticed is more and more asians are getting into the arts now (music, dj's, modeling, acting, videos) which is pretty cool and breaking away from the "doctor" or "business" aspect and are starting to be more expressive in voicing out things, both to their families and politically (I'm in International Relations and Govt, my bf is in Real Estate) so I noticed more and more asian americans being more political than their parents. !

This might be because of the specific area I live in (SV so there’s a lot of Asian adults working at tech companies lol) but from what I’ve seen Asian kids now have that stereotype of being really rich/privileged ? Also another that Wong Fu didn’t say was that Asians are seen as anime nerds lol. But they definitely were spot on with the stereotype that Asians are expected to be really smart AND still be good at music/dancing bc of Kpop/dance crews, or if not have to excel at everything basically.

I did go to Chinese school but it would always be on Saturday mornings when all the best cartoons would be on! So out of spite I learned no Chinese. (Bad Asian point) And I got so many "smart Asian" stereotype remarks from my friends and classmates that I got fed up and started purposely getting Bs to break the stereotype. (Bad Asian point?) I had to be careful anyway though, bc getting even a C meant a big ol' whooping from my parents. xD

I could soooo relate to the dim sum scene. My family is mostly from the Southern US, and I get a lot of flack for not liking the things that are considered classically Southern food. Top offense - not really liking corn bread.
