Thanks. I needed to hear this. I had a rough day. I was forced to do something I didn’t want to do when I didn’t have the emotional bandwidth for it. (It was something which wouldn’t have been a problem ordinarily, but with PTSD and emotional regulation issues, I’ve had to learn to respect when I’m having a bad mental health day and not force myself to do things which cause anxiety/stress when my nervous system isn’t up for it. Today, I had no choice.) My inner child was stroppy; the shadow was in control. I’ve gotten a lot better at spotting when this is happening and keeping it under control, but it exhausts me. And then, when I got home, I was messaged by someone whom I find to be bothersome and a drain on my energy but whom I don’t want to hurt by ending the relationship. He’s autistic, and I know he would take it very badly if he was rejected by yet another girl, possibly to the point of hurting himself. But I resent being trapped in a relationship based on pity, particularly as it reminds me of the behaviour of an abusive and emotionally manipulative mother. I worked hard to banish helplessness, codependency, and self-pity from my own life, and I don’t want to give up all this energy I’ve come into for someone who isn’t interested in/capable of changing. You’ve encouraged me to cut myself a break and not view the ending of unproductive relationships as cruel.
