You ever see a video of a car crash or a train accident where you knew it was coming? Maybe the video was labelled accordingly or maybe you’ve seen the video before. Regardless of how you knew it was coming, the point is that you watch the video even though you know. You can tell it will end in disaster or tragedy, but you still don’t look away. You don’t close the video. You stay and watch till the end.
Whether it’s out of a morbid sense of curiosity or just out of some twisted satisfaction that comes out of watching a tragedy unfold. Watching and enjoying a tragedy has been part of civilization since at least the ancient Greeks.
The Greeks essentially created the genres of Tragedy and Comedy. It’s been many thousands of years since then, but humans still enjoy these genres. One perfect example of a show that embodies both Tragedy and Comedy is Bojack Horseman.
Bojack Horseman is essentially a Tragedy with a lot of laughs along the way. It’s something that draws you in with comedy, only for you to realize you’re watching the slow destruction of a man in what ultimately amounts to a Tragedy.
And embedded in the themes of this great show are stark reminders of the dangers of consumerism, extravagance, hedonism, self-destruction, and a high time preference. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s backtrack and start from the basics.
What exactly is Bojack Horseman and what is it about?

I've never bothered to watch BoJack, but that doesn't detract from your point. Catch you on the next one!

Awesome video. I like the point you made about our country incentivising people to have more and more children while destroying the nuclear family structure and increasing dependence on the state rather than the family unit

I would challenge your base assumption that people are actually more hedonistic or shortsighted than they used to be. What makes you believe that's the case? A fictional show about a hedonistic jerk is hardly a reflection on society as a whole. You point to enduring artifacts like the great wall of china or long standing governments, but there is a clear survivorship bias there. Only a tiny number of the things built in the past have survived to our time, and that's exactly why the ones that did are noteworthy. The things being built today may, indeed, last centuries, but we have no way of knowing that now. Likewise with the ideas of people. Sure, there were some people that looked to the future and laid the groundwork for modern society through their ideas, writings, and other creations. But from what I know of history, those people were the exception. Most people just lived lives of little consequence.

Hey I appreciate your contrary views on this! I always welcome open discussion and you do make very valid points. I, of course, have my objections to your points, but it's too much to type out here. Maybe I should do a stream at some point so I can have a back and forth with you guys 🙂
