Oh boy this series could be a long one! Crazy good map find too, I don't believe I've ever see this specific mapping of the local galactic region before. It's another ot those really weird things to thing about that if we looked up a mere 10-20 million years ago, the sky would in fact be quite different. Loving it Nick. You could probably do an entire episode on the Pleiades to be honest.

Got to appreciate the research effort that goes into these videos. For all the assorted star stuff on RU-vid I'm sure these are unique, and an under appreciated resource which will eventually gain much deserved traction, though hopefully not following the traditional route of an artist having to die before he becomes famous!

Imagine life evolving on a planet around a star within a cluster. The view each night would be incredible, yet to that life, it would be simply the norm. Then they’d develop spaceflight, visit Earth, look up at night and be amazed at all the black.

27:00 I have to pass on family lore here. When my kids first saw the Pleiades, they saw a shopping cart (Atlas being the handle). While, as adults, they no longer see the cluster that way, the association has stuck with me.

Looking through 7x50mm binoculars or a little more the Hyades are especially beautiful. I cannot quite fite the Hyades in my telescopes, but the Pleiades do, that is until I bought an Explore Scientific 2" 9mm eyepiece with 100 degrees apparent field of view. Got it at an estate sale for $200, ordinarily they are $570.

Just a sliiiight correction, Nick: you said the Coma open star cluster shouldn't be confused with the Coma "galactic cluster." Sounds super nitpicky, but the correct term is "galaxy cluster" or "cluster of galaxies" - a "galactic cluster" is, confusingly, another name for an open star cluster, since they tend to occur in the galactic plane unlike globular clusters in the halo, and so the Coma galactic cluster actually IS the Coma star cluster! Confusing, I know... Aside from that, great video! So many books and videos talk about the detailed layout of our Solar System but when we get beyond that it's just too many stars to bother with and the next level of structure we hear about would be the spiral arms of the Galaxy as a whole. Nice to see this video and the previous series illuminating the scale inbetween, and exactly where we and our well-known night sky stars and deep sky objects fit within our Galaxy!
