You know Napoléon REALLY left a big impression to French peoples because, not only did he regained power one time (even if it last only 100 days), but despite being defeated two times, his nephew was able to get elected as the French President AND do like his Uncle and overthrow the Republic to become Emperor (Napoleon III, Second French Empire). XD
before getting betrayed by republicans at the first occasion, partly leading the the defeat in the franco-prussian war, ironically sparking the republic's revanchism, that they participated in creating. how ironic
The chant Vive l'Empereur!! makes it even more epic. It makes me to willingly give my life for Napoleon eventhough I am not even French. My ancestors actually fought agains him but that don't make a difference to me :D
@@davidkelly5899 if you say a 22 year veteran, it means you served 22 years. If you say a 22 year OLD veteran, it means you are 22 years old and a veteran. You did not make a mistake.
German here. I thank the Coalition for having won against Napoleon, but I must recognise you Frenchmen fought very well, and for that, respects. I salute you for your bravery in battle former enemy 🫡
@@nomisbman1826 by force not by choice. I’m very very glad we defeated Napoleon but I still respect him. I recognise his strengths. One can respect his enemy.
If I am correct, the old guard was never committed at the battle of waterloo...it was the young guard. If it would have been the old guard there would have been chaos all over battlefield Napoleon later regretted this decision
Middle guard was committed. Old Guard served as rear guard. "The Old Guard left the battlefield in excellent order with their characteristic bull-dog obstinacy and drums beating."
The old guard and the middle guard were sent in at the very end to finish the Brits but it failed. Then the entire army routed except for Middle guard and Old guard.
Must have been terrifying, it speaks to the dicipline of these men that they did not immediately break. Just looking at a stationary old cannon on a historical battlefield gives a bit of unease, I cant imagine advancing on it while it was being actively operated.
@@Zogerpogger The old guard is the only regiment that has never broke. ever. They were the best of the best of Napoleon's army and would give there life with no problem

The English were going to be massacred but they were narrowly saved by the Prussian army ! Several armies together were necessary to be able to beat the French, and they were not enough most of the time!
Aujourd'hui,il reste peu depersonnes sensibles à la grandeur,au courage,à l'élégance, aux nobles idéaux! La richesse, les vanités,le paraître ne remplaceront pas celles-ci!
I'm not french but i am happy to be french in guts and blackpowder Also can i just say that napoleon made the greatest songs ever and battle plans very good than the Austrian painter
I can translate certain bits, though I don't speak French The chant in the middle is "Vive l'Empereur", essentially long live the emperor Chargez => Charge Poilou (?) => Forward Le Garde merde something something => The guard dies but doesn't surrender
“Long Live France” is what you need to hear and is what the men who died heard on the battlefield. Their message is basically long live France and their heritage
0:44 « Compagnie ! Avancez ! » = "Company ! Advance !" 0:48 « Compagnie ! En avant ! » = "Company ! Forward !" 0:52 (soldier singing their walk pace) « Gauche ! Droite ! » = "Left ! Right !" (And repeat). 1:27 (single guys shout this a couple of time, then everyone repeat) « Vive l'Empereur ! » = "Long live the Empereur" 1:55 (I can't hear what he's saying, maybe he's just screaming to take courage, or maybe he's saying this :) « Gardes ! » = "Guards" 1:59 « Chargez ! » = "Charge !" 2:02 (differents officers giving the same instruction to their division) « Armes ! » = "Weapons !" 2:06 « En joue ! » = "Aim" 2:09 « La Garde meurt mais ne se rend pas ! » = "The Guards dies but does not surrender !". (Famous quote, the legend say it was prononced by a French general when he was asked to surrender. When he was asked about this quote after the war, he will deny it. Today we know it was possibly pronoced by an other French officer, by way earlier and during an other war.) You're welcome 😊
