You Are Not Your Thoughts…
Really ‘getting’ this completely transformed my life
But what does this concept actually mean?
And more importantly,
beyond the concept
or our thoughts around it
How can we experience this directly
For ourselves?
Well, come with me into this video for a play around with this but, I do warn you that once you know you can’t ‘un-know’ it, you can of course forget, but to be mindful is to re-member, but only come
if you are prepared to leave the judging mind behind, just for a couple of minutes you are very welcome to pick it up again as you leave. To get the most from this video you are going to need to bring some playfulness, some curiosity and attention.
So, let’s have a little look at the nature of thought..
Thoughts are just thoughts
Just fluctuations of the mind
What gives a thought its power is our engagement with it.
If I choose to engage with this thought I turn it into thinking
The spotlight of my attention illuminates a thought It makes it appear big and bright in my awareness.
But if I move the spotlight of my attention onto where I am
rather than where the thought is what happens then?
What is illuminated?
Well, from here, for me,
I am not my thoughts
I am not the voice inside my head
There is a
space
And this is a space worth exploration…
Now, from here
what is true for you?
Are you your thoughts?
or are you far bigger and greater than the smallness of thought?
You can only know your experience & what is right for you
When we first come to this putting everything down enough to feel into it can be a challenge. So you may want to play with that a couple of times...
They are just thoughts, they are not me -
thank goodness for that!
And as we change our relationship to thought we change everything
And that is so empowering…

I remember the first time I heard that quote it drove me crazy cause I coudnt find someone who could explain what it meant. After a week or so it just clicked! Your video breaks down this concept perfectly. I am gonna use this video as a reference for people.

Wow, this was actually a great exercise. I thought something was wrong at first, but then you talked about them hiding. Yeah, they went off into the jungle, camouflaged and everything. I've been to a few Vipassana meditations over the past 6 or so years, and each time, it was like 'Monkey Mind' on steroids. I'll experiment with this as it seems a good supplement or aid in something else I'm trying. Thank you.

This is something I've started to get to grips with in the last couple of years. The fact that you nailed it with your explanation just makes me even more sure it's the way to go! I despised myself for decades. Still some work to do but detachment from thoughts is a very big part of making peace with myself. Thank you for confirming, consolidating and articulating what I've been thinking.

Love your accent and the message! Now if ~only~ I can put into practice the belief! Because I definitely think things I don’t want to think!! I’m a curious soul so I’m wondering why do we have these unwanted thoughts!? And where do they come from? I’d like to return them to the sender unopened! 😂

Hi Ben, sorry that I'm just picking this up - I hope you are ok. You are right that it's not an easy one to 'grasp', it took me a long time and it's not actually something we get on the level of the thinking mind but through direct expereince - a bit like how we can't taste something by someone describing it in words only by eating it. For me that direct experience came through meditation. I never thought I'd be able to meditate, I too found my thoughts incredibly exhausting and at times awful but I'm so pleased I gave it a go because it really changed things for me.
