You Are Poor If You Live Off $1,000 a month USD in Bangkok.

It's been my experience that living in Bangkok is not as cheap as people think. For an Expat who expects to live like a king for $1,000 or less. That is not a reality. There are tons of videos saying how cheap it is to live here. It's not true. This is just one day like any other for me and I show you what I spend on a regular basis here living a decent lifestyle but not extravagant.

Love the video! I’m moving to Bangkok next month. Thank you for posting the video, I feel like a lot of videos from different vloggers is misleading, and this was eye opening. Personally, I’m going to be doing a 1,500 a month budget for a year then I’ll be doing $4,000 budget after if I intend to stay a year after.

@EatDrinkAndTravel Год назад
That's playing it smart. You'll definitely get your money's worth if you move outside of Bangkok but it's definitely doable on $1,500 a month. $4,000 a month is like making $12,000 a month here in the US. You can do practically anything you want and not worry. Hope you have a blast there.

Great content… I moved to Bangkok and agree to a point … still luxury living WAY cheaper in Bangkok then America if u lived in ANY major city with resources
@EatDrinkAndTravel

I agree with you there. You could at least survive here on roughly $1000 and eat out every day.

@@EatDrinkAndTravel I wouldn’t try it personally … I pay over that in just my condo … I didn’t come this far from USA to live average lol 😂 my $1800 a month condo would cost me $7500 where I’m from

That's why I always get annoyed when I see these videos on living in Thailand for under $1,000. You might as well just stay home in the States. If you come here you want to have the best time you can and you're not going to do that for $1,000 a month

Fully agree with your suggestions. Ps, it cost me almost US1000/mo in Hatyai, a small village town border with Malaysia. Ps, are you still in Thai or back in California?

Definetely wouldn't wanna live there permanently on such a small amount, however it's very doable if you're teaching a semester etc. Just a cheaper version holiday.

Teaching English doesn't pay much over there unless you're in a high level university. I have a few friends who are teachers and they make about $1,500 to $2,000 a month.

Hello, Just Retired last week and Thailand is a country i would love to see, I have a income of about $4224 USD a month and wondering what type of life i could expect with that income?

First off thanks for reaching out. While you can survive off of $1,000 a month living in Bangkok your quality of life will be kind of poor. Going up to $2,000 a month especially if the rent on your home is about $500 you'll have a pretty good lifestyle. You'll be able to eat out everyday and go out every night. $3,000 to $4,000 You will be living a lifestyle like you were making $300,000 a year in the US living in a moderately priced city. With the exception of shopping at luxury stores for clothing you will be able to do pretty much anything you want and not have to watch over your bank account. You could take weekly trips all over the country and stay in nice quality hotels. Your quality of life Will be so high that if you love Thailand, You would never want to go back to the US.

Most of those videos saying you can live on $1000 are from 6+ months ago. The prices have started taking off.

I know. It's still possible if you live outside of a major city and don't go out to bars for drinks. Nor if you try to hook up with bar girls. Plus you need street food everyday that's about 30 to 60 baht.

Regardless to what you say it is far cheaper than America. Where can you get a condo for $450? No where and even if all of your expenses come to $1200 or $1500 it is far cheaper than living in America! So I know your title was for views but lets compare apple to apples!! Most apartment building there has pool and a gym at that price and it is amazing! I cannot wait to come over!
@EatDrinkAndTravel
@EatDrinkAndTravel 5 месяцев назад
The title just isn't for views. It's to set realistic expectations. For some reason people have this assumption that you can live like a king for $1,000 in Thailand and that is far from true. Living on $1,000 a month US is extremely difficult and that's the point I was trying to get across.

You can live on 32 000 baht in Bangkok. You will live like a middle class Thai which is ok by me I would of course need to eat some western foods once or twice a month but apart from that 250 us a week is ok
@EatDrinkAndTravel
@EatDrinkAndTravel Год назад
And I know people who do this. I know people who survive on 20,000 baht a month. If I'm moving to a country like Thailand I don't want to live a middle-class lifestyle. When I was living here I was spending between 70,000 and 100,000 baht a month. I don't want to sacrifice my standard of living just to save a few dollars per month.

It's been a while since I've heard anyone say 'live like a king' on $1000 especially in Bangkok???! You do definitely make a person rethink things though even if I'm already rethinking things to death already 😅 . I'm getting by ok on my soc sec here in the Midwest and my rent is $700. Several years ago I worked in Vegas driving a taxi for 4years and made about $1500/month. I rented a room in my friend's house for $400. It's all relative I guess. I do have decent savings along with my SS, my health is good, no bills, never been married, no kids, not a drinker for about 20 years now. I plan on a few months in Bangkok and maybe visit Phuket and then settle in a less expensive place like Jomtien . Sorry for rambling but like I said you definitely gave me food for thought! Thanks for the mini tour 🤟

@EatDrinkAndTravel Год назад
Since I shot those videos the prices have gone up an extra 10 to 20% in the main cities. I'm visiting Bangkok right now from California and just my hotel stay for 3 weeks has been a little over $1,000. You will do fine if you avoid places like phuket's and Bangkok. You can definitely survive for a thousand or less because a lot of Thai people do so. But there's no way you're going to live like a king on $1,000. On top of that you'll get the urge to eat Western foods because you will get sick of eating Thai food every single day. Those meals add up.

@@EatDrinkAndTravel so 1,000 is a nogo but what if you double it? It seems like people are generally saying for 2k usd a month you will have no worries.
@EatDrinkAndTravel
@EatDrinkAndTravel Год назад
@@live4yourself_ you'll definitely be living fairly comfortable on $2,000 a month. Keep this in mind. I'm currently in Bangkok right now and my $450 a month condo that I was renting during COVID times is now fetching $800 a month in rent. Living expenses have gone up as well over here. I'd say between $2000 and $3,000 a month is the sweet spot.

I think your appetite was ruined by eating that crispy pork rice beforehand. When you are nearly full, nothing taste as delicious anymore. Next time, stay hungry, and that $35 crab omelet will taste DELICIOUS!!

I usually eat two or three plates of food when I go out so me eating Chrissy pork really wasn't that big of a deal. Maybe they just made it different this time but there really was no seasoning on it and it tasted kind of bland

I get what your saying but paying 450 dollars a month. Seriously you can do so much better than that. That's crazy as well the 120 baht beet this is tourist areas being ripped off. If you see many Thai eating at restaurants it's because it's affordable for Thais and good. Happy travels your on the wrong track here with this. ❤ 🇹🇭 🙏 All the best UK 🇬🇧

I make $30,000 US a month from my retail business. I'm not trying to live on a set budget. There were months in Thailand where I spent $15,000 in one month. There are other times where I averaged $2,000 to $3,000. Unfortunate in that I don't have to worry about trying to survive on a thousand dollars.

Eating at over rated ay Fai will blow your $1000 budget in one day. 😀 $2000 is a minimum in Bangkok and still not likely standards back home. Assimilation and not getting freaked about rats and bathroom signs geared to ethnic tourists is vital more vital for surviving Bangkok. Key is to remember you're not there as a tourist as the initial visits. It certainly can be done and more so if you elect someplace other than Bangkok. As I contemplate a move, I'll be fine , especially considering I'll likely be moving around every three months with a 1/4 of year in Bangkok.Even though I grew of up in Los Angeles and currently in Miami, you'll tend to shy away from a big city in retirement. I play golf twice a week and see the better courses charge just as much as here in FL. You can do it for $30 at a crap course, but why ? My HOA in Brickell Key alone $800 a month and Miami is super expensive. That doesn't mean you have to spend money because you have it. Lot of corners can be cut moving to Thailand. You'll want to assimilate and have a hobby or two. Avoiding Asoke and neighborhoods (s)ex pats congregate should be a non starter. This production hints as a need for virtual signaling.

This production is stating that if you come from a Western country such as the United States, You will not have a fulfilling lifestyle if you are budgeting $1,000 a month.
