This is so right. I was doing editorial and commercial work before the crash in 2008. I was making around 8,000 to 12,000 a month and still had used gear. No car payment. Small apartment/small office. I tell people production starts at $6,000 to $8,000.00 I had a client that wanted to a shoot for $1,500.00 and wanted to talk to my stylist. I told her my stylist rate is $1,500.00 alone. I really feel for wedding photographers cause people want that editorial or high end look and they want you to do it for $500.00.

You are absolutely right. I was brought up in a heavily entrepreneurial family and have had this approach hammered into me since I was a kid. My struggle has always been my sense of self-worth, which is something many creatives I know seem to struggle with as well: the sense that my little ideas / vision aren't worth all that much simply because they came out of *my* mind. It's much more visceral than any formula or rational sense of what is the correct price that ought to be paid for a service / goods ...

Finding the going rate is also part of the challenge. How did you figure that out? (SYD, 🇦🇺)

Indeed. As a life-long entrepreneur, it's always baffled me - this silly notion these days of starting with: "Divide your overhead (no matter how unrealistic/outrageous) by..." Utterly bass-ackward. Figuring out what you should charge isn't rocket science people. Simply turn to the age-old, well proven formula of starting with "What will the (read: YOUR) market bear?" and working backwards from that. Additionally, the (likewise, age-old) universal Economics 101 notion of "Supply and Demand" further dictates that - niching down (to a high-demand/low supply) photog specialty PLUS... becoming the absolute BEST supplier of that specialty - will always ensure you'll have all the gigs you want, paid at top dollar.

I have owned several businesses since 1993, so yes and no. I think you ask the " how much can I make based on my expenses " question before you decide if it is worth starting that business. Looking at expenses first and then finding out going rate in your area, allows you to judge how much profit you can expect and if it enough to justify opening the business. I closed my $100K in inventory Computer store at the end of the 90's when prices dropped too low to justify all that investment.( profit margins dropped from 30% to 10% ) I changed from selling custom built higher end machines, to mostly repair only, and sales of some good used machines. There is so little in profit in Computer hardware now, no small business can make it work anymore, thus why so many stores go under or went to a repair model only. I don't understand how people pay $2000/ month for store rentals with how little profit is in consumer computer repairs. I bought my property and live here as well. It was the only way to make it make sense. When I closed up, my computers were $100 more than big stores but my warranty was 2 years parts and labor. I sold no junk and the machines were business grade parts that lasted 10 years typically. Business dropped over than $100 as people got to be so cheap. Now I am only 1 of 2 smaller stores in the area and others come and go every 6 months or so. I am about to open a photo studio since I have so much room here. I have been a photographer for many years but only on the side.

Very interesting and provoking. Today I Learned the word Target Costing. Thanks Scott. However, in my industry, called social photography (I think?), where I shoot mostl headshots and some events, there's sadly not enough data or standardized process to know anything really, clients are all over the place. And so because I've approached the pricing strategy traditionally, but very methodically (none of my peers run the sort of spreadsheets i do), i was able to 3x my rates over the span of a few years. I've also helped others do the same. Basically the spreadsheets helped our negotiating power and, ultimately, client selection for the better.

I have an accounting minor from uni, and it's not rocket science. It's pretty basic cost accounting. The term is called TARGET COSTING. You have a specific amount you can charge, and you have to work out your costs and profits below it. That's generally the case unless you have something both niche and in-demand where people will pay whatever they have to for it, which is clearly not the case in most areas of photography. But I saw that Karl Taylor video ages ago you're probably passively criticizing constantly, and it was the first thing that jumped out to me too: not no, but HELL no. That is NOT how you price your work.

It’s like profit first accounting and finding your starting rate first, followed by how much profit you “need” then adjusting your operating expenses to fit.

Great advice. Pricing is a nightmare. Some people advise do package prices. I am interested in if you have your day rate, how then do you work out how many days are required? Say one image takes 6 hours to set up and shoot, then another only takes 1hour. How do you work out the number of days to charge.
@Mrjinkz
@Mrjinkz 3 года назад
I usually charge per image if it's a large project, say, 300 items of clothing all shot flat lay. I would then charge per hour for a creative, as exactly what you said, one shot could take 3 hours, while another could take 30 mins. Doing this should cover you in case this happens.

I do have an issue that when I have already charged a client a day's work for the photography that I'm doing. How to later negotiate additional fees (royalties) for usage? And do you charge per day as for every project or sometimes for number of pictures that you need to do. Let's say 5 course meal with 5 different stylings? per day or per photo?

I've been known as a music video director most of my career but I really enjoy photography and want to start offering photo services but I'm having a hard time pricing first gigs and how to go about shooting, keeping the files organized and things like that, been holding off on a few jobs because I'm not feeling confident enough I can handle everything in a timely manner

How do you figure out the right pricing when still growing as a photographer? I try to negotiate with clients, but I also want to give the right value for my time and my work.
@BomboraSurfShop

You will have to research look at about 50 photographer's websites that offer the same service as you and write down the prices. Make sure they are reasonably close to you as some locations natural have higher prices. Once you've got the 50 prices add them together and divide it by 50 or however many you find and you will have the average price being charged for your service. Then you need to decide if you are happy earning that amount. If you are then great, if not you need to decide if your work is better than the 50 photographers who's website you just looked at. If it's better increase the price to a figure your happy with.

@@BomboraSurfShop Hey Gareth! Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately with my genre prices are not displayed. Commercial photographer based their fee on the project, so until now I have been guessing what my colleague charge. And many people are not opened to talk about their fees etc...
@BomboraSurfShop

@@noemiscavo2551 breaking in to the commercial photography can be difficult. I mostly do weddings which I enjoy and the commercial work I do is very small scale for small businesses that want to promote their businesses online or selling small products on eBay or Instagram. But if it helps I do it on a subscription based model I go to their business or warehouse for around 30 mins - 1 hour depending on what package they've taken once a month and I provide them with 30-60 images they can use to promote their businesses. I don't bother to charge them a usage rate as these are small businesses and 95% of them either don't know or don't understand what that is. They sign either a 3 month contract or a 6 month contract and the rate works out at an average of £100 per hour. Let me know if that information helps you.

@@BomboraSurfShop hey...if not a secret..how do you find your commercial clients? Advertising? Cold calls? I have a new business and have been struggling with that to be honest. The clients that come to me don't want to pay much or just plain don't understand why it costs as much as it does .... And the price they want to pay is usually not worth the work. How does one even find clients who are willing to pay what you're worth?

Thanks Scott, So when doing product photography for example, my client wanted a price on 30 product shots. I quoted them a flat fee per shot. Should I have estimated my time involved for the 30 shots and quoted a day rate instead?
@NexVoidGaming

It seems counter intuitive, but your point about raising prices gets more work makes sense. It's almost like you have to look at it backwards, from the clients side. Which again, makes total sense as they're the ones holding the cash you want. But it still seems counter intuitive. 🤣
@TinHouseStudioUK

I guess its like when we buy things. We have a set budget in mind for what we need and will spend that budget. I justy got a new computer and specced it up until my full budget was spent, rather than getting a cheaper one that would probably have been fine.

Very true, and pretty much true in any "luxury" industry (i.e. not necessary for survival). My oldest sister is a perfect case in point: she was a dog groomer (now retired) and struggled to get clients for a few years even though she was winning competition after competition. My dad convinced her to double her prices and within a few months she was fully booked for the following year (and every year since and until she retired). It's a well researched social effect and we should all keep it in mind - be it when setting our prices or purchasing services and goods ourselves!
