Often what we consider higher self is a high minded delusion of being a better person. To really be a whole person you have to incorporate the good and the bad. Those that can serve the world best are those that understand their darkness, both so they can resist its pull and so that it can be used when the time calls for it. Someone comes at you with a knife and this whole "higher self" facade will quickly be forgotten.

On the contrary. Speaking for myself: my higher self helped me to get out and stay out of several situations you describe, and put the experiences into perspective afterwards.
