I'm so sad that I missed the Glacier Blue... silly analysis paralysis... I'm trying to not turn my garden into a teal color... but after seeing them with greens in a Hollars video I regretted my paralysis lol. If anyone regrets their choice in buying the Glacier Blue let me know!
You are NOT the only gardener who doesn't like to handle bugs. I was impressed that you grabbed those horn worms with your bare hand. I will NEVER do that. 😅
Epic Gardeners, Kevin and Jacques, recently did a comparison of 14 bagged potting mixes. Several they thought would be great were actually sub-par this year. Jess is prob spot on that companies haven’t let the bark/wood chips compost long enough before they added it to the mixes… I usually swear by happy frog in the brown bag, but because it costs so much, I switched to the regular yellow miracle grow potting mix. I was floored because in the same season, the miracle grow plants did so much better. I don’t like non-organic potting mixes, but in a pinch it worked out great for my gteenstalks.
So encouraged that it’s “not me” but the soil or companies. I was wondering! Thank you! This makes a lot of sense in my garden as I have some that are not fully green like my basil or some tomatoes plants and have been fertilized in green stalks and containers and in ground.. all bagged soul of different brands and plants with different issues. Pest problems started at the get-go, and last year hardly any pests. Ugh. NOT GIVING UP! Xxoo
I love it when your videos are like this! It's just like hanging out with you in the garden and family. Thank you for sharing your life Jess! Your laid back take me as I am and I'll share what I think is so cool about life, it's exactly why we love you ❤
Yes, they are! I welcome a neighbor’s small flock of chickens and two ducks to free range my back yard. I’ve pulled a half dozen hornworms and fed them to the ducks, who are now consider me their BFF!
I missed your videos! It's been a while since I've been mentally prepared to watch them, but I left that situation last week, thank the Lord and I'm coming back to myself and my passions.
I share this every time I hear that someone is having a difficult time with hornworms. About 4 decades ago I learned this control method from a neighbor, used it ever since with 100% effectiveness! It's gross but it's natural and it WORKS. - Collect at least 4-5 hornworms and squish them in a glass jar (the gross part). Cover the jar and let the smashed carcasses "rot" for about a week. - Put the rotted stuff into a sprayer and add water (exact amounts aren't important, just dilute). - Spray all over, under and around the plants. That's it! This repels ALL hornworms, so your garden is now safe from their voracious appetites. Oh, and since hornworms don't limit the eating to tomato plants, put it on your whole garden. It isn't harmful to anyone, any pets or any plants. It just repels the little buggers.
So nice to see you back in your garden with your smile beaming! Oh wow! Big ones! You are braver than I am with those creatures! Yuck! Chickens will be happy! So enjoying your story IG & FB posts from McMurray Fest and you meeting Charles Dowding and Our Modern Homesteading Conference in ID.. So great to share time with you in person! ❤👩🌾🌻🙌 Love you and what you stand for in Him ✝️
Love watching all 3 channels!! I also suffer with ADD and depression. My garden is my happy place where my mind does not go running; just in the moment. This year has been very difficult more sooo many reasons; so weeding was not a priority and my garden is behind and a mess... I'm still taking part of a local garden tour open to public. I have lush plants, dead plants, and weeds. All the other gardens are perfectly manicured. I'm ok with it, because life happens and we learn more from our mistakes. I'm looking at it like a teaching opportunity. Hopefully the people that will come here will not be too disappointed. ❤🌱
As that helicopter flew over your farm, a life flight helicopter flew over my suburban neighborhood. We’re in the flight path of the major hospital a few miles from here .. the way the crows fly ❤
Hi Jess I hope you and the family are well I know it's a long time since you heard from me but I have had some serious health problems I've been having seizures for about 3 months after my oldest brother died so I hope you and all your fans would consider praying for me to get myself healthy and well again I also became deaf I have to put captions on in order to see what you post but I'm glad to see you're still posting I always love what you teach us. As you know I love seeing your posts may God bless you your family and us after I became deaf last year after I lost my oldest brother 13 weeks before his 62nd birthday I became deaf I hope you and your fans will pray for me to regain my hearing and my family will gain their jobs and what they need.
Everyone tried 1 tablespoon yeast 2 tablespoon sugar in non chlorinated water in quart jar let set for 2 hours to overnight mix in 5 gal. Non chlorinated water I added a gal. Of compost tea 1 cup per plant. OVERNIGHT MY PLANTS GREW AND LOOK HEALTHY OVERNIGHT
Yep. I'm in E TN and I've had to water everyday for weeks now. The rain we got was just surface level in the past week. So still have to water everyday so that the soil doesn't become hydrophobic.
in my country we roast the eggplants, peel them, drain them and store them usually whole in the freezer for use during winter (the last few years I've also seen them commercially frozen like this, so it seems to be an actual thing, not just an empirical practice)...it's not *exactly* the same as fresh, but almost (also, have you tried putting the eggplants whole either on the Blackstone or on a bbq, so they get the charred exterior whilst cooking the interiors? the smokiness makes them even better than roasted in the oven)
Jess I love when you get lost in your garden then stop and say ooh a strawberry! Just love that! Thank you for keeping it real and telling me that I can be a gardener.
You are exactly right about companies selling low quality soil to keep up with the demand of new and existing gardeners. I bought 5 big bags from Tractor Supply of an “organic” container/ raised bed soil. Nothing is growing in those specific buckets where I used that soil. What a waste of money. Now I am stuck with it
After the situation with the contaminated compost a couple years back, I've been adamant about making my own compost. I still buy compost every growing season to make up for what I can't make but I always amend with my own compost with all the potting mix I make. I always sift (1/2" mesh) out the big bits for every product (peat moss, compost, my own compost) and put those big bits back into the compost bin to break down over the season. I pick out all the bugs from my compost and put back into the old compost bin. Is this time consuming? Yes. But my plants look awesome and I know what goes into the soil. I noticed with the cow manure compost, it's good to sift because some of the balls in the compost are balls of poop that haven't broken down on the inside. So you're putting in hot stuff into your soil mix. Always always sift.
You were spot on about the purchased soil and amendments. Most of my plants that survived in those areas are finally starting to grow. Going forward, I will work harder at making my own compost. Don't give up!
I’m a gardener who doesn’t love bugs either. I respect them in their space/place in our ecosystem, I even invite and welcome them.. but 🤢. I’ve been picking potato beetle egg and larvae off my tomatillos .. so gross 😂
💚 The shade cloth area looks great and is obviously cooler! Glad your Mosquito Fish have that new, cooler home. Wowzers, your basil is so prolific, bushy and beautiful! 💚
I have 3 greenstalks and the new one I got this year with new soil hasn't grown as well as my other two. It tickles me that you notice things like this too. I always feel like am the only one who notices everything about plants and how they grow. Xoxo from Missouri ❤
Hi Jess I really need your help, i replaced all of my planters this year in my garden and bought new top soil and compost. Some of my tomatoes are looking really bad with tightly curled leaves and my okra is about three inches tall. I Googled them and it said they had pesticide damage, I don't use any chemicals in my garden and I also ask the guy where we got the soil he said there where no chemicals in it. Well he was wrong and now I don't know what to do. I saw your mother say she uses Thrive but I don't know how often I can use it and should I be doing something else. Any help would generally appreciated. I love your videos, you have a fantastic garden. Bless you and your family
Miah you are such an amazing guy. Your for sure a rarity in today's world. Your whole family is amazing. Such a joy to watch, and see the love that you all have and share with each other. God Bless
Jess, I see things I don’t want so I through them in a doom pile in my bedroom. I tell myself I’m waiting for a super hot day to work indoors. It’s been there 3 months and it’s growing. I feel your pain.
About preserving eggplant, I make a Filipino dish that starts with grilled then smashed eggplant. I have grilled the eggplant and then froze it by itself to use it later in the winter. It turned out good. A lot if liquid comes off of it when you defrost the eggplant so you have to make sure to drain it well before using in a dish.
Hi Jess!! I feel ya about the closet. I'll have to find another video of yours to listen too as I attempt it later. I have gotten so saddened when it comes for to my garden, but when I saw a bumblebee in my rose of Sharon way back collecting pollen that made me smile. Thanks sweetheart!!
I know how you feel, I also have ADHD too. My husband chose an older home for us to move in. The entire 2 floor is a loft full of closets with clothes hangers.
I have had success planting calendula between my tomatoes. Medicinal and keeps thoes darn bugs away. however we have had a plague style invasion of grasshoppers this year that nothing i have done has even put a dent in them! My garden is shredded!
I am melting in California right now....triple digits and fires....HAPPY 4TH OF JULY FOLKS! I pray for rain!! ❤ It was good to see you again @ the #modernhomesteadersconference2024 ❤ God bless you and your family!
I love walking through your garden with you. I'm going to be moving across states the end of this month so I don't have a garden this year and I miss it more than I can say. Seeing yours keeps my heart happy. Blessings.
This year I decided to reuse all the old, dry, weedy, used up soil in every plant-pot I had. I grabbed my biggest garden pot, pulled all the weeds and clumps of roots I could, and added bag soil and compost. This year, things are growing well. I'm still very much in the classroom stage, but this feels like progress. All lessons are of value. ❤
Here in Wales, UK I and many others have veen having issues with stunted growth, no germination or weak and sickly looking plants...since lockdowns it got worse. I swore it was the compost.
So true about the potting soil this year. I have been having nothing but trouble since I started seeds. Frustrating, but I put the wimpy plants into the ground anyway. The containers, I will fertilize. This year the garden comes with the feeling of ...it will be what it will be! Good video.
Wow I would give anything to grow eggplant. At this moment cost 8 dollar to buy so I am without eggplant dip. Jess my Mum in in my childhood use to preserve the eggplant dip for winter when was not available in Hungary. See from this recipe if you can alter and preserve your baba..... So first washed the eggplant and big yellow capsicum and put them individualy into alufoil. Put on rack in the oven and bake until soft. Scrape out the flesh and with plastic knife (so does not discolour) chop it into paste. Add grated onion, salt, pepper, vinegar, sugar and enough oil to make a nice creamy paste. Taste should be tangy balanced flavour. Then she put them into jars and did a dry heat canning. I guess you could do hot canning but I am not sure then to add the oil. Maybe leave it out and when you open the jar for eating then add the oil to it. We only had celophane to cover the jars (wet the celophane and cover the jar with rubberband) on the top so if the celophane was sucked in a bit meant it was sealed. She did this summer and in the middle of winter we were able enjoy summer flavour. Hope this gives you an idea to try to preserve yours. We use to put it onto hot toast but since I have moved to Australia I do put on pasta dish as a sauce. Nothing should touch this with any metal. Metal reacting with it so use plastic bowl or glass bowl. Enjoy
I used the same soil for three years. This year it is complete garbage full of wood. Added an additional raise bed, and everything in there is discolored. I have been giving it fish fertilizer and still not working, :(
I'm in a freeze dryer group on Facebook where someone recommended drying the eggplant by itself, then rehydrating to make the babaganoush. They said it tasted just like freshly made.
Do you have a compost recommendation? I have the same issue with a whole new bed (with all my tomatoes😢) and my greenstalk. I'm working on my own worm compost, but not yet
I have had horrible results from new bagged soil this year. I don’t have compost so my only thoughts are to feed with organic fertilizer and hope over wintering with amendments will help.
OMG I was just saying I needed to help my grandson with autism who lives with me we needed to go through his clothes and the bar thst holds them broke so we had to do it. How crazy
Last year I started some containers on my front steps, they did well enough but my plants were nowhere near what I expected. I'm reusing the same soil with some organic fertilizer tilled in for a second season and my plants are so LUSH for the time of year. This is a real encouraging video! My planters with new soil arent nearly as nice.
You are so positive and I just love that…. You make me smile and laugh out loud, which is awesome after a hard day at work. One more year and I will retire at 71 and can’t wait to spend everyday in my garden and flower beds. How did you like my beautiful Idaho? Hopefully next time I can meet you!
15:45 i may have just ::gasped:: as you chopped the top half of the basil off in one swift snip! 😳 😆 I pray next season I have an abundace and can feel free to do the same! ♡🙏
Loathed by gardeners in its caterpillar stage, the Manduca quinquemaculata, or tomato hornworm, has eight V-shaped marks on each side and a signature horn on the rear. Manduca sexta, the tobacco hornworm, closely resembles its tomato preferring cousin, but shows seven diagonal white lines on its sides and a curved horn. Both caterpillars turn into large moths with four- to six-inch wingspans in colors ranging from brown and gold to pink and grey. They often are mistaken for small hummingbirds when they fly during the day and hover helicopter style to nectar on flowers, which is why they are also called Hummingbird or Hawk Moths. While I understand the horn worm is destructive, you save swallowtail catapillars. So maybe a sacrifice plant is called for to save some of the moths for future enjoyment!
Hi Ms. Jessica. I watch all your videos and have been on guard when purchasing new soil if I've wanted to plant a new rose or some other plant. I've used half home made compost and half bagged soil with good results. It's important to note that the compost is home-made and I know what has been used in the composting process. I wouldn't be so nonchalant if I was using purchased compost. God bless you.
I'm trying yellow wax beans this year they seem to be doing good. But I my tomatoes I have in containers are better than last year but not as good as I would like.
I picked a hornworm off of one of my Greenstalk’s yesterday. It is only the 2nd or 3rd one in my 7 years of growing! I bought 2 tomato plants from a nursery and I think it hitched a ride with them. I start most from seed and I feel like it has made a difference in my ecosystem. I had no idea why my tomato plant was looking so homely but there he was, chewing on leaves and looking me right in the eyes without a care in the world!
The helicopter pruning of the trees along corridors is amazing. We live near a gas pipeline and I got to see the pruning with a huge vertical saw with a whole line of circular blades. Like a giant hedge trimmer, it makes short work of it, and the best part was watching the incredible pilot landing the saw, lying it down skillfully and safely landing his bird. Thank you for this amazing glimpse of everyday life while you live in your space. Your garden is getting many "rooms" to enjoy.
That just jumped off the screen/page at me bc I live in California where the PGE has Not trimmed the trees near the power lines and massive fires have resulted including deaths! Now I have an alternative method to give them not that they will use it; they just keep raising our rates.
Oh my gosh Jess your poor little face is beet red. I love both of your channels. You have such a soothing voice. Its just so relaxing to listen to you.
Omg we are so much alike! No wonder I resonate so much with you! I have so many hobbies and have such a hard time with organizing (ADD) because I get overwhelmed. I have been watching you promote Greenstalks for years and finally got 2 for myself for Mother’s Day. I used a mix of Happy Frog, our own compost, perlite, pro-mix, and another local soil and my Greenstalks are indescribable as to how lush they are. You would be mind blown! Gardening can be challenging in Colorado. My Greenstalks are doing so well that I got one for my husband for Father’s Day, the “inventor’s bundle”. I just got some seeds in it yesterday. I am so excited to see that one fill out too. Thanks for all your inspiration over the years. I wish I could have your success but I’m not good at filming myself or being at a computer. You are living the dream! I’m not as young as you, but I haven’t given up on someday having land and a cow or two. For now, I’m just an urban homesteader with a few chickens and a garden. But it’s still a full time job! I don’t know how you do all of this!
Where are you in Colorado? I am in the foothills in Loveland. Yes, it is challenging and this year has been super dry up here, the rain clouds just pass over us dropping a pittance of moisture before heading out over the flatlands.
Likewise I am an urban homesteader and at 64 still dreaming of my 5 chickens and 3 dwarf nubian goats. Last winter I built the terraced vegetable garden. This winter I am expanding that and finishing planting companions in my rose garden. Now I plan to interplant our backyard lawn with grazing plants suitable for chickens and goats, and prepare for building shelters.
I'm in Colorado also, but at 9,200 ft! I'm a new gardener, and boy, has it been challenging! I so appreciate this video because I'm having the same soil problem Jess described. I thought it was me!! and I was getting so discouraged. I now have a few things to try and won't give up. Thanks Jess. Let us know how your treatments work. God bless.
I wish I could be you . I'm sure that I am older than you (72) .In an apartment the same one for the past 31 years. Now they have sold the building, and we must move ? Have no idea where. Hopefully there will be space for a garden , like here, but doubtful. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck.
So Much Love! Sincere Love! For you, your precious family, your garden, your recipes & that you share from the heart! Sincerely your heart. May I just say, ~ YOUR AWESOME! THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!
