I often wonder if today's programmers know that there are millions of us watching 60 year old programs rather than hold back streams of vomit when attempting to view today's television offerings? Man, Groucho has been dead since 1977 and You Bet Your Life is a sample of what was once great TV. Funny, intelligent and brilliant it was and after six decades, it's as fresh as ever. Today, when it comes to prime time fare, all one can do is wonder what spoiled bitch the "Bachelor" will be hosing for a month or two after the competing HOs have been shuttled back to Neverland.
@waynes866
@waynes866 7 лет назад
I must disagree. Many people think this is a golden age of television. There are MANY good shows, but unfortunately most of the best are on cable (like HBO or Showtime) or subscription TV (like Netflix or Hulu). Yes, there is dreck, but there was dreck in the 50's, too (remember Space Cadet?) Groucho was a special guy and that's why I'm watching this; there was never anyone like him before or since. But that doesn't mean other people have no value. I watch lots of TV and have never seen The Bachelor (or The Bachelorette, for that matter). There's enough good stuff that I can safely ignore the crap.

There are several different versions of Groucho's last words. Another one is that a nurse came into his room in the hospital and said, "Mr. Marx, we just want to see if you have a temperature." @Ray Carroll There were a number of TV programs that were "simulcast", back in the late 1940s until sometime in the mid-1950s. (So, they were produced with the radio listener in mind, too.) The Burns & Allen radio spot was actually more entertaining, to me, than its simultaneous TV broadcast. 'The Lone Ranger' was also simulcast on both radio & TV (1949-1954). >>> The TV series ended in 1957. 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet had a long run, on radio, and was simulcast on TV when its television run began in 1952. Production was different for simulcast programs because radio listeners had to be able to "visualize" what was going on...

Well, if it's comfy as a huge bed, I guess it has to be built like a tank for when the driver falls asleep. Best of the best built in the USA. Not the best of the best overall, which is why most US brands are long gone - DeSoto died while You Bet Your Life was still on the air - and overseas brands dominate the US car market. Chrysler Corp, which owned DeSoto, is now part of an Italian-Dutch company. Those "best of the best" crapmobiles and shitboxes needed frequent maintenance and lots of it, and people didn't keep them very long before they got junked. RIP: DeSoto, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Studebaker, Packard, Nash, Hudson, Rambler, Kaiser.... all in production when this episode first aired.

The old lady, Mary (17:12) likely had a hard life. There were very few (if any) government 'safety nets' in the era, and she learnt to fend and think for herself. Expectations were also demanding, both moral and social. (Not many of us today could survive the physical and psychological ordeal.) When Mary said she was a "spinster from choice" (19:19) she immediately had a grim and tight-lipped expression, meaning there is a lingering sadness involved. The nose wipe (20:04) shows the cigar smoke was irritating. I think she says to Groucho, "You look to be enjoying it!" (20:15) She also has a very upright posture, usually a sign of not lounging about on sofas and so forth. Mary never takes her eyes off Groucho, having to concentrate as her hearing was okay, but not great. For instance, when Groucho quickly rambles through the rules of the game, Mary's expression was that she could hear it but not decipher it (17:34).
