You Bet Your Life #59-24 Ellis Arnall, former governor of Georgia ('Water', Mar 3, 1960) 

My opinion on groucho has changed a great deal after watching these "Shorts." He Impressed me as Being a Kind,Decent Man with a Bit of a fun-Loving Kid Thrown in.

Gov. Arnall was an excellent governor and a fine human being. He was a liberal Democrat who had lowered the voting agein Georgia to 18 during his term in office 1942-46, He felt if you were old enough to fight for this country you should be old enough to vote. He was for Civil Rights as he fought to abolish the racist poll tax in Georgia.

Groucho was definitely awesome! 🥸 Governor Arnall was very impressive.

"I hope you admire me more now that I have shown my good heart and good disposition, towards you, sir" (13:37) - the way governor cast a glance at Groucho as he brought this statement to an end, gave me a big smile.

We Americans today can learn a thing or two about manners from watching these guests.

The Reverend was right about Tennessee.

Even the older women on this show were hot - and without the fake look that women have today.

Yes, I do ramble on, but my ramblings are always truthful and educational. As a lifelong Georgian, allow me to point out, Gov. Arnold has what we call a traditional Atlanta Southern accent. As he spoke the word "glamour" as glam-a. There's a distinct different between the Gov's and Peggy's. Her's is a little more "syrupy." It's interesting to note, GA was involved in the "motion picture" industry in those days. GA is big in the movie industry. I moved to metro-Atlanta from south GA when I was about 12, back in 1961. I fell in love with the Atlanta accent spoken by those classically educated, Southern politicians. I immediately began to practice and I have developed an accent that will pass for a traditional Atlanta accent. However, I can still do a, "How y'all doin' down thar? Y'all gonna have a good pee-can crop?" Atlanta is about 40 miles south of where we live; we frequently travel to or through Atlanta. My west TN wife tells me when she and I travel to or through Atlanta, "You automatically switch to your Atlanta accent." When I retired from the real world, I got a job with a company that rented buses and drivers to the carpet industry in North Georgia. I cannot count the number of people from every continent in the world, whom I have picked up at the Atlanta international airport and brought to their hotel in north GA. Consistently, the largest group of customers by frequent trips were from Canada. In other words, the bus held 40 passengers; I probably picked up 4-5 groups of 40 over the 7 years with the company. I always intentionally and in a very over the top way slipped into my traditional Atlanta Southern accent. Not only was I responsible to get them safely from the Atlanta Int'l airport the 60 to 70 miles north, occasionally, I was responsible to give them a short tour of Atlanta. Imagine me speaking with the accent of Governor Arnold. I will alter the spelling of some of the words in an attempt to copy the speaking. As we passed the GA State Capitol with it's gold dome, "If y'all will look to yo leff-t, that's whey-a our-wa e-lected crooks fig-a out waze to stick they-a hey-and in our-wa pock-its. No doubt, ya'll have the same crooks up yon-da whey-a y'all live." This included a quick tour of the famous Peachtree St, the sight of many historical events and places. When Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With The Wind she was living on a little street just off of Peachtree Street. How good was I with my Atlanta Southern accent? One Canadian lady commented to another, "I could listen to him all day long." This was back in the day when Mr. Obama was our president. Some wanted to ask questions to a typical American, but really did not know how to open the subject up. I handled it thusly, "Is there any subject or any question you folks from Canada would like to ask an average American?" Just as certain as a cockroach cracks when you step on it, the questions would always be, "Ron, what do you think about Obama care and gun control?" Obviously, I was an employee of the company spending millions of dollars to host their customers from around the world. Therefore, I would not about to get into an argument. I stated, "I'll explain to you both views on each subject." That's what I did. They learned a lot a great deal about each subject from me; I learned a great deal about Canada's laws also. One particular trip, I took them to The Varsity, the worlds largest drive in restaurant. It's an Atlanta landmark and has been visited by many presidents, well-known people from all walks of life from around the world. However, like much of Atlanta, a person needs to be aware of their surroundings at all times. As I was wrapping up the opposing views regarding gun control, I was parking the bus in the huge parking lot of The Varsity. I pointed out our surroundings, how easy it would be for someone to rush to the door of the bus, force it open and be pointing a weapon, holding a baseball bat or a knife and robbing everyone on the bus. I pointed out it would take the person a few seconds to force open the doors. I then asked, "If that happened, would you rather Ron Greene to be sitting on his wallet or sitting on a Smith and Wesson .380?" It got so quiet on that bus, you could have heard a cockroach peeing on the carpet. I got rather amused when one of the ladies said, "Until I watched the movie Lincoln, I always thought he was a Democrat." That's when I gave her a quick lesson on the founding of the Democratic Party, the party leaders of the South after the end of Reconstruction, the dominating party for generations after the war. The same party that led all Southern state governments, the one who turned a blind eye to the lynchings of KKK, the party of the one who said "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow ,segregation forever." etc. I also pointed out the party of President Dwight D Eisenhower who in 1957 sent the federal troops integrate Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas. This was over the objections of all the Democratic Southern governors. Once again, It got so quiet on that bus, you could have heard a cockroach peeing on the carpet. I can go on.
