I started selling on eBay three years ago after retiring for a hobby something to do. My initial investment was $400 dollars total. 3 years later I’ve made close to $80,000. Not every item was a triple or a home run some are a base hit or a walk. I can’t wait to get out of bed every morning this has truly rejuvenated my life. My entire business model is built on investing $6-$8 per item, Selling for $20-$30 on eBay, and netting $7-$10 per item. We sell 600 ish items a month. I could buy ten times the inventory I do, so its scalable If I wanted to work more. I'm netting 4-6k a month. The idea you cant make this work if you aren't making 1000% ROI are just misguided. I'm a grinder and I work hard.! I don't care what my hourly rate is. I'm happy and I'm the boss. By the way, I use my credit card all the time because I love the points. Pay it off every month.

The best thing about being a hobby reseller is I don't need to value my time because I do it for fun. I could spend 4 hours playing video games on a saturday morning or 4 hours working on reselling, and I find each very fun to do

It is very difficult and I think the commenter's statement is well-placed. Your rebuttals are also well-placed and I think you broke it down very fairly. Part of the issue may be that new sellers are going full-time too early and their personal expenses are quite high.

im guilty of leaving my job early, but I started sourcing more smartly. Only grabbing items with a 50% sell thru, after a few months my 90 day sell thru is 80%. I'm now making more than I was making at my job. I also think I quite a year and a half too early. but that forced me to adjust my business process. I also support my family on just my income alone, 2 kids and a wife.

I've been selling on ebay for 25 years. I see such a change in the buyers now than back when I first started. I know the economy also plays a part in what people can afford to buy now, prices have soared on everything. I am always thankful for anything I make on an item. I can't afford to buy high priced items to resell but something I find a gem and make a couple hundred on an item. I Dream of Jeanie

We still have an ebay account but we use it as a way to advertise our Brick and mortar location. We cut back to the smaller size store and we really don't post that much on there. We sell antiques, have a brick and mortar store. We get more walk in traffic than ebay simply by having a facebook page and costing things as they come in. Our time is valuable, so listing photography, taxes, cost of sales just makes no sense on Ebay. People who are trying to sell Yard sale junk are now competing with chinese drop shippers who are selling new products. People work way too hard trying to make living on eaby and there are better alternatives..

I Dream of Genie. As for selling . I sell mostly vintage glass. I calculated 3x my money invested. I recycle: reuse packing and boxes ( for the most part) I do purchase Bubble wrap. Your profit is made on “ the Buy”. I purchase with cash only. Cheap. No credit cards. Keep it simple and Grow my knowledge on profitable items to source. I enjoy your channels and content! I learn a lot from watching You. Thank you!

Agree with all of it. I almost always use free packing material, I only pay for tape and shipping labels. The money is made on the buy. Pay too much and you won't make money. Always look to grow your knowledge. Easiest way is to search sold items in a category and see what brings the $$.

I make so much money on travel. My keeping track of mileage is a major write off against profit. Many years I’m driving to pick so much, the government allowed this last year 62.5 cents per mile and making actual $18,000 to $25,000 on legal annual mileage write offs which is so much more than keeping individual receipts like gas, tires, brakes, engine repairs, oil changes, transmission cost even rental costs if your vehicle goes to shop. The allowable standard deduction from profit allows me to keep money to reinvest That I don’t pay taxes on. Winner winner chicken dinner. Love this business.

Absolutely agree with you! I pay up for many toys and dolls items and after ebay fees and Portuguese VAT I only get 30% of profit, but the items, most of them at least, flip in 2 weeks if priced correctly. Cash flow is one of the most, if not the most important aspects of a business.

I get tons of my stuff ‘free’. Actually lots of it is from sweat equity! I’ve done several clean-outs after estate sales. At my age I wonder how long I can do that. I also have a couple of friends who say hey I’ve got a box of stuff I’m ready to donate, do you want to go through it first? I’m not too proud to go through and take what I can sell. I know which thrift shop they want me to donate the rest of the stuff to. I also am happy to look for items they want and when I find them at a thrift shop I buy it and give it to them. Don’t kid yourself though…I still love the hunt and do that on a regular basis but am picky with what I buy and how much I spend. I was sorting and reorganizing my eBay area in the basement today… and oh my…that death pile!!! Maybe I’m not as picky as I think I am😖. groan.

I'm retired even with slower sales my operation cost is under $200 a month including my climate control room & premium store fee. It's about your operating cost, cost of goods and shipping cost. It also requires discipline in listing & shipping I have built my listings to 3900 items +.

People that make those comments to Kevin like that could never accomplish what you and other good resellers do. They have been making excuses their whole lives basically sabotaging themselves in the process. I’m also retired from 40 years of sometimes hard labor and I think that can be the key sometimes. I could do reselling in my sleep compared to what I used to do.

We buy things so cheap that we make a great profit per item. We have hit home runs on things we bought in bindles. We hope to at least triple up. Besides that, we are having FUN!

The credit card example may have been brought up as many use a dedicated credit card to keep track of their purchases and expenses. If one goes into selling on Ebay expecting to make enough sales in 30 days (It can sure seem that way from some YT videos) to pay off the credit card monthly, that can be the issue. Many, many items are long tail and can take months to sell. Seeing expenses add up while waiting for sales will discourage many people. Even if they are using cash, it can be discouraging. The old adage, "You have to have money to make money", is true with Ebay too. It may not be as much with other businesses, but you still have to be patient to see a return on your investment.

I don’t think eBay was set up for the nickel and dime garage sale reseller …..trying to make a buck…..It’s more for the niche items, the vintage and the homemade -custom items. We’ve been selling custom hand painted to specific order instructions of buyer, full sized reproduction Carousel horses and rocking horses.. for 25 years… they sell for an average of $3500 so you don’t have to sell that many in a year to add to your income ….never had a problem. It’s when you start listing Willy nilly cheap items .. that’s when people get frustrated on shipping and how eBay works.

Started here a couple of months ago with 100$ cash and have turned that 100$ into 1500$ gross. Growing the store very casually and honing in on products that have a fast sell through rate. Just a hobby seller so cant complain. I will be teaching my kids how to do this when they get a bit older so they can generate cash flow from an early age and appreciate the importance of math, money and savings. :) Thankyou for another great video!

You mentioned a very good point concerning time with that sell that I don’t think people understood. The product was clean. All you had to do was take pictures and list. That’s a huge deal if you’re going off an hourly rate.

Sometimes you have to research the item, do a write up, quality photos then packing and shipping. Don’t forget people pinging you about questions and requesting different photos. I had a person wanted to see the item outside in the sun. Another wanted to see the earring on my ear. I just want to sell items to get them out of my house. Kids don’t want anything and my husband and I are getting older.

I only do this as a hobby to sell things i love so i can build my collections. The cheaper items $20 and under might not seem worth it, but if they list and pack fast, those few dollars profit can add up quickly and help in between the bigger sales. Im willing to pay up for more expensive items. I know It will sell fast and are easy to ship even if i dont double up on it. People need to learn to break down what they'll make before they buy the item and determine if its worth it from the moment they buy the item to when it ships out the door and all fees are taken out. Also, have a way to sell or get rid of old inventory

I am a new serious reseller because I lost my job at 63. While looking for employment on zero income, I could start with things at home. I absolutely agree with you! I feel that you did an amazing job breaking things down. Obviously, some things will vary but overall you nailed it! I hear (read) so many people complain about ebay all the time. I just couldn't be more grateful for it! I have sold off and on since 1999 and am now full-time. Just starting back up in January I am now thrilled with the results! I just need to ramp it up now that I'm back in a groove. What we put into it is EVERYTHING. We hear it so often that we make money on the buy. I buy super low whenever possible and pay attention to sell-through rates, and get as much of my shipping supplies for free as possible. Ebay is helping me put my life back together after Hurricane Ian (we are still rebuilding here in Florida). I am absolutely certain that there is going to be so much more than that because I know what I am capable of. That's where the money is truly made. Keep up the awesome work, I appreciate you 🥰! Great subject. I've only been doing this for about 9 months and am still learning the judgement of what to buy, have bought many items that wound up either not being worth much or takes a long time to sell. I'm getting better at picking far less items, but ones that will sell high or quickly. Even paid up on a few items, which was scary, but worked out ok. I know people complain about fees, but some are tax deductible because of running a business. It's still way cheaper than trying to sell stuff having a brick and mortar business. People are doing the math wrong and they get discouraged. Having a brick and mortar is way more expensive and you will make way less money if you don't know the numbers. Some people have big expectations about selling online. You have taught me slow and steady will win the race. I tell everyone I know that you are the one to watch and learn. You keep me up to date on everything eBay and I appreciate all that you do!!!!!!

I agree with what a couple of other people have said, it's easier to stick with all of this when it's a hobby that you thoroughly enjoy and it brings in side cash. I think it's an extremely productive hobby to have... I'd like to go more full time with this eventually. So instead of ebay, what are you going to use instead? you aren't going to stop picking

I buy primarily on credit. I use the 2-3% rewards on crypto! I understand your point though. I have a flexible budget depending on the deal at the moment. I am thinking of future sales when I buy super bulk at cheap prices. I don't really count my hours of sourcing or even listing in a $ per hour mindset. I love doing it so it doesn't matter most of time.

I have a ton of owned family products that I have been wanting to start putting on ebay and I just have to get started. I have sold items on eBay over the years but as now I am retierd I want to start getting more into selling on eBay and your content has helped me a lot on getting ready to start up. I always wanted to resell but just didn't have the time because of the 9 to 5 grind 😪.. I got hurt at work 2 yrs ago and am now in a wheelchair!.. I have all the time in the world now.. been selling sports cards full time and wife is selling all other stuff!.. we watch you and learn from you all the time, kev... our knowledge of what to look for has been vastly expanded. Not doing 80 000 yet though.. lol.. thanks for always creating great content!
