“There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps... then turn around and see somebody white and feel relieved.” ― Jesse Jackson
You have delivered a heartfelt gift, a desperately needed tool, a priceless model for all of us. The least I can do is keep on giving. Bless you and thank you. I have work to do, and you have shown me exactly how to do it.
A local grand jury, police, and the US Department of Justice have so far come down in Wilson’s favor. The physical evidence suggested Brown reached into Wilson’s car during their physical altercation and likely attempted to grab the officer’s gun. The most credible witnesses agreed that Brown moved toward Wilson before the officer fired his final shots. Although some credible witnesses suggested Brown raised his hands up before he died, witnesses who disputed major parts of Wilson’s side of the story were discredited by the physical evidence and when they changed their accounts. In the end, there simply wasn’t enough evidence, especially given the struggle at the car, that Wilson wasn’t justified in fearing for his life when he fired the shots that killed Brown.
This reminds me of when I wear a suit--e.g. my LinkedIn profile--and I'm automatically 10 times more approachable. When I'm wearing jeans and a T-shirt, I have a force field and similar people avoid even making eye contact with me. Hair isn't different, countenance isn't different...just what I wear...and I'm the SAME GUY. That bias...interesting.
Rural, republican, white guy here. Here's my black guy (or any guy for that matter) test: how's he dressed? I'm happy if I see someone with their pants around their waist, black or white.
But that's exactly her point. Why get angry about low pants but not torn jeans? Why get angry about gangsta rap when many of them were inspired by Johnny Cash? Why dismiss their accents as uneducated when people do the same thing to us southerners? We're all people with potential who come from unique places with unique heritage. I know that you know that and truly believe in it, but the fact that we're more likely to associate neutral unfamiliar things about black culture as bad is automatic, subconscious. People once regarded Jazz with the same criminal disdain, and the same with country music, which was pioneered by poor rural musicians black and white. We can't only accept them as people if they act just like us. They have a culture and heritage just as valuable and unique as ours.
Verna, thank you for an excellent, passionate talk! You boldly named some of the behaviors that perpetuate the status quo and provided specific actions to help save lives. Your talk reminds us that we can change habitual behavior and embrace one another as human beings. Cheryl Harris
I listened to this video and after watching, I gave her a round of applause in my living room! Then I read the comments...just watch the video...do not scroll beyond this comment because the hate is real.
Never heard anyone speek this real when it to violence. It's very said that I have to look up Stop The Violence to even hear or see someone this intelligent address a subject like this. I am a boxing coach and songwriter that just completed a professional video called (Fight Song) and I can care less about the video, it is more about the message create through my video. I would love for this message and song to be heard by comes as many people possible. Please help me to help others by watching and telling at least one person. Our focus should be on our children, kidd and youth! Thanks
... I like her speech, but there's also another side to her speech and it bothers me a lot. That is...when I watch and listen to her I see a black woman uplifting, defending, protecting, nurturing, and fixing the image of black men - WHICH IS BEAUTIFUL - buuuut black men wouldn't do this for black women - not today at least. It just gets old... Sorry if this stirs up negativity. And I guess this makes me appreciate her, specifically her, for doing this because doing something like this takes courage.
I agree with you completely, being a fellow black man,I see black men tear down black women and it's disgusting.Black women are the strongest ,most supportive and beautiful(inside and out)that I know.its quite sad
I agree, but that is a flaw a lot of single black moms have, they don't respect themselves so they don't respect their child. Believe me its not all their fault though these dumbass dads need to step in because while a woman can do a lot, she can't do it all.
+Lacey Brown Exactly what I was going to say (but a little harder lol). Black woman should only focus on themselves and their own issues, not waisting our time fighting battles that have nothing to do with us.
CONGRATULATIONS VERNA.....YOU NAILED YOUR TEDx TALK!!! Proud of you! It captured the most profound impediments of bias that distance us from one another, and particularly White folks from Black men--especially, young Black men! You touched on sensitivities that often reflect insecurities. Most importantly you promoted the oneness of humanity, which provides the right context for strong and productive human relations! I will share your talk and look for ways to get you here in Springfield, exposure throughout the Urban League network, and in the UMass network. "Keep on Pushing" (I noticed you had Curtis in your array of pictures).....Sm.
If Michael Brown wouldn't have robbed a store reached in the cops window wrestling with him going for the cops gun. As the evidence has proved he would still be alive. Maybe if he would have showed the officer some respect things would have gone differently
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. Verna Myers is very wise and empathetic to address these concerns. I do question why it's considered more socially acceptable for women to have those same stereotypical reactions in fear of being attacked by men in general though (regardless of their race and/or ethnicity).
Us Black men in this country needs to wake up and start standing up for Our beautiful Queens Black women like Sister Verna Myers and Sister Maggie Anderson who is out there making a difference for all of Us and We men should stop calling Our help meet terrible names yes Some of them maybe but I or We Brothers should learn to honor support and respect Our own Women no other women will tolerate what Our Women had or have to tolerate Me Myself will honor, support, follow, and respect Our Queens
Pay attention to 13:58 -14:15 VERY introspective and deep. NO race but the Human Race. Our dependence for humanities to live is contingent on breaking primitive physiological barriers. This should be showed to every HR department for diversity hiring and training. Peace there nothing like the force of love. shall concur and topple all evil.
The young black men need to quit breaking the law, get a job and all would be fine. Quit blaming their problems on the man. Look in the mirror that's who keeping you down!
John Stock Michael Brown's parents didn't raise him his grandma did. His mom and step dad later robbed her at gun point and assaulted her as she was selling t-shirts memorializing Michael. Says a lot about where Michael's behavior was learned.
UMANITEATea4urLife There you go proving my point. Blaming society for the blacks problems then threating me with violence from a big black man. Go fuck yourself!
Thank you Verna Myers you are awesome! How I translate life! This is a universal Law Of Spiritual Growth, how we live our life's takes us further on the spiritual ladder. God sees everything so who are you fooling!
Maybe educate young men and teach them discipline and accountability and they won't commit crimes provoking law enforcement to do their job. Crazy, I know.
Michael Brown was a thug and for Verna Myers to talk about him in the same breath as the shameful deaths of blacks in the past does a disservice to her forefathers.
How come there is no justice for Dillon Talyor???????? Why is it I had to search this out and it did not make such a buzz??? Is it because he was a white boy? Why do we not question how Young Black Men are raised? What where the values and how involved was his family? Was it a case of a bad person doing a bad thing because of his upbringing? I was raised in a trailer, we had little to no money. I was still taught that I could do better. My parents thought they were victimized I learned as I was older. But my PARENTS did not impress this on me when I was young. By telling your child you are not as "equal" and they are "oppressed" they will have that mind set. The problem is that we impart these feelings onto our children. Put a group of four year olds together from all races and you will see that at that point they all think, feel, and act equal.... www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/sep/3/justice-dillon-taylor-after-white-utah-man-fatally/
I especially loved the part about the woman pilot. Verna doesn't grasp that her bias towards male pilots and against female pilots is 100% due to affirmative action hiring and quotas. If pilot hiring was 100% based on merit for the last 40 years people wouldn't think twice about a woman pilot. And yet, she admits that she does. Just like a lot of us. What are we IMPLICITLY admitting Verna? Hmmm...?
Friends, if you want to continue pushing this discussion into the public forum, please consider supporting and spreading awareness about this upcoming film. Thank you so much! #AndJusticeForAll facebook.com/andjusticeforallmovie
Watched it through, and I have to say, this is the race relations equivalent to asking Deepak Chopra for financial advice; you could ask him, and he is likely going to say a whole bunch of shit, but you are going to get zero return on practical, actionable advice, thus rending the effort a waste of time. But hey, if you can manage some emotive intonation, while discussing a topical subject, somebody may just pay you to baffle them with bullshit too.
If you don’t see anything actionable in what she is saying, its because you have no interest in being actionable, you have no interest in actually changing how to associate with poc.
@@KristianaCembre interesting that you'd assume the way they associate with minorities is in need of change. That's somewhat of a bigoted frame of mind for that to happen..
And BTW Your gorgeous! Do you live near Michigan? Have you ever ridden a snowmobile? Come to Michigan and see me and I’ll put you on a nice sled and take you down state trails, that are groomed for snowmobiles. In many towns you ride right down the street to the gas station etc. Then the trail dumps into plenty of lakes which you can ride across And drive your slide right up to the bar. Park outside go inside grab a couple cocktails and a good meal. Go outside, burn one then back on the trail. I have my own cabin in Northwest Michigan, the snow belt. Let’s hook up and go for a ride. If you want to wait till spring, then we can get the bike out ! I’m 41 n single. 6’ 205 lbs.

As any Black Person will tell you, living on planet earth is literally a living hell in many ways, created by fears, dark apprehension and anxieties. The real (no-fluff) solution to our tortured existence as far as I am concerned is twofold. One, the return of our true history in the form of pre Arab invasion Egypt and all that that African Civilisation has to offer. This would give context and pride to young and old alike. And this leads to the secondly point. The Economic inclusion of Black Society, which could be easily done by way of the return of our primary and secondary Art Forms, Music and Dance. These two forms, brought back to their former excellence's, will help create many and ever growing global revenue streams.
Max, the bias shows clearly to my eyes that, "the younger ones" encompasses some good and some angry hurt people. The presenter asks us to notice OUR hurt, OUR fear and then look to see who truly stands in front of us. Not ALL, not even half, of the younger ones will we need protection from. Man of white skin, 61yrs old.
@@DaLincer that's very accommodating of you, but maybe you should let your guard down. They're playing a new game called "brick the old white dude in the back of his old white head" nowadays. Doesn't matter how you feel or what you've done - if you're older and you're white, you get bricked. They won't tell you when it's game on either. They just come up from behind and give you the brick. There's video of it, look it up..
Lots of emotion few facts. Almost every video I have seen of people being shot by the police in America regardless of their colour has one unifying feature. They didn't follow the police instructions. I haven't witnessed every shooting and the stats suggest something is going on that requires everyone's attention. People really need to get to the bottom of this because it will continue to be obscured by the past crimes of segregation and the only way things will change is if honesty is applied to this problem. I don't see that anywhere having said this I didn't watch this presentation because it was full of touchy feely emotional rhetoric and poetic descriptions of people that have nothing to do with the facts of the situation so maybe there is something in it but any other group of people prefacing a discussion of their own perceived race with such flowery language would be treated as absurd. This has become expected unfortunately and it is a racial stereotype that serves no one ultimately.
love the speech....but this will never happen my love....since the time of Jesus has black lives never mattered....and on a social level blacks mostly interact with white counterparts at the workplace, university, or when they are called upon by their white masters. The same would go for Africans except when calling upon a light skinned you be ordering something from a fast food joint. I believe we are socially engineered to socialize with our kind and unfortunately blacks in America are in the minority and you guys are not represented at government level to make policy changes.
It's a desperate hope but it is still necessary to have. To say it's impossible is to say that humans are failures. That we can't adapt, learn, see the struggles around us and feel sympathy.
