What is Hangul?
The Fascinating History of the Korean Alphabet
Hello and welcome to my video about Hangul, the Korean writing system!
Hangul is a unique and fascinating alphabet that was created over 500 years ago,
and has been an important part of Korean culture and identity ever since.
In this video, we'll take a look at the history, characteristics, and significance of Hangul.
Hangul was created in the 15th century under the rule of King Sejong the Great, who wanted to improve literacy rates among the common people.
At the time, Korea used Chinese characters for writing, which were difficult to learn and only accessible to the educated elite.
So, King Sejong and his scholars designed a new writing system that was simpler, more logical, and easier to learn.
Hangul consists of 22 letters, including 14 base consonants and 8 base vowels.
In addition, there are 18 letters more, including 5 double consonants and 13 compound vowels which are combinations of base consonants and vowels. Each letter represents a distinct sound, and the letters are combined to form syllables.
The letters are arranged into blocks, with each block representing one syllable.
Hangul is read from left to right, top to bottom, just like English.
One of the unique features of Hangul is its scientific design.
King Sejong and his scholars based the alphabet on the principles of phonetics and articulation, so that each letter corresponds to a specific sound that can be easily pronounced.
This makes Hangul an efficient and logical writing system that is easy to learn and use.
Hangul also has significant cultural and historical significance in Korea.
It is an essential part of Korean identity and heritage, and is widely used in modern Korean society, including in books, newspapers, and electronic media.
In fact, Hangul Day is a national holiday in Korea, celebrated every year on October 9th to commemorate the creation of the alphabet.
In summary, Hangul is a unique and fascinating writing system that has a rich history and cultural significance.
Its scientific design and logical structure make it an efficient and easy-to-learn alphabet, and its importance to Korean identity and culture cannot be overstated. Now, if you watch the six Hangul class videos taught by Teacher Ting, you'll be able to read Hangul in one hour. Alright, let's get started!
Thank you for watching, and I hope you've enjoyed learning about Hangul!
