I listen to some of Suze's advices but I do not agree with her push to wait until you are past 70 to retire. She is a multimillionaire catering to millionaires and has lot touch with the average American.

A good video of a real life, imo, situation. I'm 55 with health issues and don't know if I'll live 10 more years, let alone 20 years. I want to retire at 56 with just my 401k because I want to enjoy what I've worked for. My family averaged 75 years of living. I think I may be in the 65/70 year range. But hey, only God knows. @tlr1604 yes, I have started checking into Healthcare. That's the most concerning thought for me. I am hoping with no debt or mortgage and very low discretionary spending it will combat some of the insurance costs. Anything can happen on any given day, not guaranteed tomorrow.

The article is about retiring EARLY. As in you need to pay for your own healthcare and make your money last a lot more than 30 years. AND you’re too young to start collecting SSI. Still, $5 million seems steep when a much smaller amount will grow over time.

half dozen years ago I thought they'd be wiring my grave so I could work remote after I died. I'd been making double and triple payments on my mortgage from the beginning (2012) and paid it off with a TSP loan 3 years ago. I knew my projected retirement income and adjusted my savings (and TSP loan payment) to match that as a test. And happily walked away at the end of last summer, and was very happily surprised to have a slightly higher pension and SS survivor's benefit than I was expecting. I haven't touched my savings yet, but there's a new A/C unit needed for the house.... **sigh** I'd love to see a video showing what you might expect as "extra" income with median savings amounts in both Roth and traditional 401ks. At a certain level (50k?) it's really more of an emergency fund than an income source.

Suze is over-prepping for a catastrophe. To if you prep to the point that you're at least 85% certain you can make it comfortably, then why not retire? The key is to have extra just in case. But you don't need $5 mil unless you have massive bills.

Drew & everyone listening to this episode ------- THIS ANALYSIS IS A STRAWMAN the context is everything I am not a fan of SO nor DR but don't take it out of context. This is about retiring VERY early, which is only one type of FIRE lifestyle I know you want to retire at 25, at 30 and 35 ------ take a look at the podcast ----- Afford Anything Podcast Episode #153 Transcript: Why I Hate the FIRE Movement, says Suze Orman > > SUZE: Listen everybody, I know you want to retire at 25, at 30 and 35 know you want to retire at 25, at 30 and 35, but here the problem as I speak to you at 67 years of age, approaching 70, as you get older, things happen. > If you don't have a significant amount of money, listen, if you have $20, $30, $50 or $100 million, be like me, okay? If you have that kind of money, and you want to retire, fine. But if you only have a few hundred thousand dollars, or a million, or $2 million, I'm here to tell you, I doubt highly that when you no longer have a paycheck coming in, and you've invested that money and maybe it's making some interest for you or dividends or whatever. If a catastrophe happens, if something goes wrong, what are you going to do? You are going to burn up alive, because you won't have the money to do it. Drew, why not do a reasonable financieal analysis for someone who has that nest-egg ---- maybe do a back-calc to show what type of expenses you would have to have + any further expenses (house, wife + kids, LTC, emergencies, holidays?)
