So true... I have other calatheas and a maranta and all are fine, looking healthy and growing. Then I brought home the White Fusion because I couldn´t resist how beautiful she was. Since then it´s been so much stress to keep her alive & healthy - I would never believe that I will spend so much time running around just one plant. I made it to a point when there were no crispy or yellowing edges and she was in a top shape with a new leaf coming, I was so happy that she is happy. The next day half of the leaves started curling up having yellowing edges, so I increased the humidity, still not helping... :-(
oh man...i am sorry to hear. Will you give it another try later? Its worth giving it another try if you really like it. Its important to get one that is healthy. I have struggle with many calatheas but I find that the ones that are healthy to begin with, they are less likely to die on me. =)
My Makoyana... I was so ready to give up on her but recently she put out 3 new leaves so at the moment I'm praying for the leaves to not start to curling and browning.
yeah, they are quite the diva! I put mines in a vase recently surrounded by leca to help increase the humidity. its hasn't died yet! if you want to see what i did check out this video. =) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g3cjD22PFmc.html
Thank you so much!!! You saved my white fusion! All the leaves went crispy and yellow and just shriveled up. I thought it was gonna die. So i tried out your terrarium idea as a last ditch to save it. I didnt have a pretty container but i had transparent plastic bags. Id shower and gather the humid air and pop that over my calathea pot, repeat the next day. It was so shriveled i didnt know if it was doing any good for it, but i kept at it and low and behold! I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL TENDER BABY LEAF!?! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you, you saved my plant. Your way works!!! It just loves being in a container with those little clay balls and water. Seriously, I thought it was going to die, because the nursery that I bought it at didn't really help me much and I'm not good with calatheas. I killed a bunch. Thank you, thank you.
I want one so bad! They're just so beautiful! Luckily I haven't run across one in any shops and I know better than to order one online so maybe it will come to me when it's the right time...
This was the top of my wish list and decided to order one online. She traveled from Ohio to Olympia area. She’s kind of crispy in places. I will definitely be utilizing a few of your tips! Thank you very much 🌱
Awesome! yeah, higher humidity will help with shipping stress! I have had mines out of its terrarium for a few weeks now, so far so good. Once calatheas are strong and healthy, they are able to handle lower humidity levels! Good Luck! Would love to hear how its goes!!!! =)
Literally went through the same exact steps. Got a rehab yesterday that was brown and crispy. I figured misting tons would help and today I noticed the leaves turning slightly translucent. Seconds after you explained I got up at 3am and wiped all leaves of excess moisture lol. This was really helpful!!
I love calathea and have to say white fusion is one of my favourite. I nearly killed it after getting it for a month and have no idea what got wrong. Thought I must have watered it too much. Read a lot of review about how to care or revive the plant and go all desperate. It costs about 7USD per pot here and I wanna give it another try. Living in malaysia, a tropical country, should be able to help the plants to thrive.
Yes totally! I think ppl should definitely try plants more then once because I have 3 orbofolias and one has never been happy so sometimes it's the plant
@@BotanicalWoman I got my Orbifolia like a week ago and it was doing fine. I haven't watered it yet since the soil is still pretty moist. I have put it at the place where i used to put my fusion white and it didn't develop any unhappy behaviours.
lol better be on its best behavior ✂✂✂ 😂 Mines took a while to adjust to my home environment so it did lose a lot of its original leaves but its continues to put out new grow so thats a promising sign =)
They do find their way to throw tantrums. Lol. I even watched somewhere in the youtube that plants like calathea like to stay closer among themselves instead of being placed solo. I talked to the nursery about some tips of caring white fusion and after got convinced and negotiated a deal, I've placed 2 x white fusion that cost me about 11 USD! I could easily get 4 x calathea like rosy, dottie, orbifolia, zebrina with this cost here... surely this time will have them thrive by finding them the perfect locations in my house.
Thank you for this video, it's very informative and I'll be applying the tips you provided. My caletha is going through the crispy edge phase and I've been freaking out misting it like crazy. Hopefully I can save it
I have a Calathea Medallion and a Maui Queen and both are doing absolutely great so far, even better than the monstera for some reason. I just ordered a White Fusion online and I am already scared haha let's see how these three work together.
heyya Christine, thank you for sharing these... i just adopted the plant like 2 months ago, and it was so fluffy and have strong light green/white/purplish coloring.. so i decided to put it on display in the porch area facing the morning sun from 6-9AM -- HUGE MISTAKE!!! after 2 weeks, I began to noticed that the leaves were starting to fried up and crispy... so I moved the plant to side that have 90% shade, but still have enough indirect sunlight now, after 1 month under the shades, it began to have mood swings... one week it recovered well and the leaves were starting to point up, the week after the leaves were wilting and limp, and today I noticed that some of the leaves are moving to the direction where the sun is, and leave some empty spots on the back area... SO FRUSTRATING!!! then I saw that you put your plant inside a closed terrarium for the whole month to increase the humidity level Q1 : do I still need to have sun light enter the terrarium, or should I just put the plant in dark area (i.e. inside a box or cupboard) for the whole month for it to grow back / recover? Q2 : should I trim the crispy edges, leaving the healthy parts? I'd appreciate if you would answer my questions above... Thank you... :D
yes, the terrarium is right up on my west facing window, so it gets a few hours of direct after noon sun. the leaves will grow back smaller if there isn't enough light. i usually just trim off the entire leaf if its really bad. but i honestly think its a personal preference. this plants needs really high humidity because the leaves are so thin. good luck!
I’m new to the calathea world and ended up getting this gorgeous plant which definitely is the evil queen!! I cannot figure out for the life of me what is going on! Some way you can maybe help me?
Excellent video, lots of actual useful tips, especially like the watering demonstration, very rarely find proper watering info on clips. Quite in depth and much appreciate it. Just a couple of question though.. When you say in the sun, are you referring to a North, East facing window? ie avoid afternoon strong sun? Also what do you put in your soil mix, just peat moss?
Hi Kimbobadcat! Thank you very much! So happy you found this video informative! I only have a West facing window and the only light I do get is late afternoon sun and YES, my white fusion has adapt to handle the intense light. I haven't repotted it, it is still in the same medium but i does look like it is mainly peat moss and perlite. I recommend using coco peat if you can get it instead cause it is a more sustainable option. =)
I gettin' Love-Hate relationship with Calathea, My first Calathea (ornata) has gone last month, it was gettin crispy, crispy, browny, and die Then my 2nd one is Threecolour, i got it from My Mom with a bad condition, crispy and browny spot everywhere, almost hopeless I said "NO more Calathea" 😂 Buuut i decided to cut all leaves, try to keep it moist and now i'm so happy there're 3 healthy newborn leaves, a new life, and a new hope for Calathea It's really full of drama with them 😂
Mine was so beautiful 🥰 I was just in love 😍 then my leaves did the same thing the brown leaves 🥺 so I split my plant in 1/2! Put one side in my 29 g terrarium & the other in a plastic pot. As of today the one in the pot has one leaf & in the terrarium still has its leaves but a new leaf coming up 🤪 I thought my son who is on the spectrum was my drama queen but the white fusion calathea has won his title!
Oh, man... I fear I made a rookie mistake buying one of these. Stupid Facebook and their effective targeted marketing totally sucked me in. Thanks for this info! Between this video and your follow-up, I have a few tricks to try to save my crispy little baby.
Great video! What was that plastic box for? Was it to create humidity? It looked like a tupperware, you sprayed the plant, and put it in the tupperware. Wouldn't the plant die due to lack of air? Thanks, sorry for all the questions.
New plant mom here! Thought this plant was a beauty but realizing it will be tough to keep alive. Can you suggest a terrarium? Also the clear box idea. Love it! Did you open it once a day, how long, etc.? Trying to make sure I dont kill it!
I have trouble getting a terrarium that is big enough for it. any storage box will do. you just want to refresh the air inside, its best to do it daily but you can probably get a way with every three days but if your box has holes, you can do it every 4 to 5 days, it depends how big your box its, the small the more frequent you will have to refresh the air.
Got mine 2 wks ago...in the mail...came looking beautiful...but it's getting crispy after failed misting attempts. I think I need to just leave it alone. Originally from Seattle, I'm surprised to hear the ambient humidity of ur location isn't enough. I currently reside in MI where the humidity easily runs 60 or above during the summer so I'm resisting adding my white fusion to a terrarium...hoping the more I leave it alone, the better it will do. To be determined.
because the leaves are so thin, it really needs higher humidity to stay happy which is really hard to achieve outside a tropical rain forest!🙄 Good luck and keep us posted! =)💚
Thank you!! My calathea fusion has been getting crispy on the edges, I'm pretty sure it's the misting too much thing 😅 also excited to go on a hunt for a terrarium.. You mentioned that you moved it up close to the window - what direction is your window facing? 🌱❤️
I only have a west facing window in our apt. it needs a high humidity environment but it can tolerate lower levels, you just need to give it some time to adjust. I think 60% humidity is bareable for them 😂
I'm starting to think calatheas prefer humidity itself, not misting or pebble trays. I have many and only increasing with a humidifier and having several hygrometers around them help immensely. Misting seems to damage more fragile varieties but need warm tropical air with slight air flow!
I just adopted a calathea white fusion from my nursery’s co worker she was giving up so I’m helping keep it alive. Where did you get your terrarium from.?
Target but it was from 2018 so not sure they sell it anymore. If you watch my more recent white fusion video, I found a massive case and so far the diva seems happy! It was difficult to find a glass container large enough. Let me know what you end up using.
Mine has so many new leaves and growth but the edges of the more mature leaves has these infuriating light brown (tan color) edges and it doesn't take long for the others to do the same, it drives me crazy and I threaten to throw it out weekly. But it it's one of the prettiest plants I've ever brought home and hate to give up on it. It spends most of its days inside a tabletop greenhouse my daughter bought me from IKEA bc I've been a plant lover for as long as she's been alive (I'm 63) I call it ICU for plants and the white fusion is almost always in there. I wonder if it will ever get simpler to care for?? I have a few that are more difficult than others but none this difficult! It's a reminder of when I first started to have plants in my early 20s but nothing was EVER like this, even when I knew nothing about plants was it ever like this as far as I recall! Are these brownish edges common for anything impartcular?
Hi! I just got a Calathea White Fusion this past weekend -- you are SO right. They are very pretty! Mine seems to be bent at the tip of the stem, where the leaf/foilage starts to grow. Any ideas why or how to fix it? Happy to send a photo via email, etc. if that will help -- Thanks, in advance! PS. Do you have an Instagram for people to follow along?
My calathea is not white fusion, but I think most calatheas are in the "Drama Queen" category. You are just standing in front of it, asking "What do you wish for? I've tried all! I'm your fateful servant!" - but the b***** doesnt answer. It rather keep dying... But I'll win! 😠 Somehow..
Its also my first calathea it got mealy bugs so I had to cut almost all the leaves but the 3 new one... Now the mealy bugs are gone and the 3 leaves left are curling and getting brown tips so I'm panicking and ask her to surviveeee every damned day thanks for all your advices ! #DivaPlant
Very informative. I just found your channel and so far loving it. A few weeks ago purchased "a white fusion" and later the leaves started turning brown on the edges and curling ( I had put it outside under a pergola) but brought it back inside and now trying to see if that helps? My question is, can these be cut back, would they sprout new leaves and can they be kept outside? Thank you for your time.
Thank you! yes, you can cut it back just like other calatheas, i actually just did that with mines as it got attacked by spidermites and i didn't keep on top of it. you can keep it outside as long as there is enough humidity and not below 45 degrees F. I have mines outside on my balcony right now, seeing how it likes it.
Omg thank you so much for the terrarium tip! My plant has been suffering for a bit now. Had pretty bad infestation of spider mites and started using neem oil directly. Turns out the leaves got even crispier :( Going to try and bring her back to life with the terrarium method. Also, how much neem oil do you mix with water and detergent?? Would greatly appreciate an estimate of it.
You should also spray the underside of the leaves to blast the suckers off! And raising the humidity will certainly help it, just remembered you don't want condensation. Too much moisture will also kill it! Good luck! Keep us posted!
Wait! So they do like brighter light then? You said they like low to medium light, but then said it was pretty much dying until you brought it close to the window. Also, do you combine those 2 fertilizer each time you fertilizer your plants?
They actually like direct sunlight because they have so little green on the leaves, which is common for most variegated plants. I am quoting what I have read about calatheas, "they like low to medium light" which has not been my experience! for this queen anyway.
Botanical Woman Ok so mine is doing terrible! I got her a few weeks ago and had her in medium light next to other high humidity loving plants. She’s shriveled, yellow, curling, no new growth. I will move her closer to window 🙏🏼 Could you please reply to my fertilizing question? Thanks!
How frequently are you spraying the plant with neem oil? I've been trying to do so twice a month as a preventative measure but I'm not sure if this is too often. I usually have a fan on immediately afterwards to increase air circulation and discourage fungal growth.
I don't use neem oil, if there are spidermites, i rinse off the foliage and use a diluted castile soap spray. rinsing the foliage everytime you water your plant is a great idea.
Can this plant get root rot? I have one that is dying but I'm worried about watering/misting it regularly atm because my friend said it might have root rot but they didn't know for sure. What you're saying is I should get a terrarium or container and mist it rather than water it? right? I just want to make sure because I want to see if I can save this cute little plant (that was $18) :(
Mine is struggling big time and it makes me SO SAD. I don’t want to give up on it but I honestly don’t know what to do! It doesn’t have any new growth right now. Never has given me new growth since I got it about a year ago. Help?
I had that one, i had it longer than I thought. it kept dying and coming back...but this time it was gone forever. I live in hawaii and don't know how to take care of these
here is the link to my latest update on my white fusion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g3cjD22PFmc.html Its were it resides now. doing ok, not as happy as being completely enclosed as the humidity is lower. but i am happy with my current set up for now. =)
when i trim, i like to just remove the whole leaf. I don't find cutting into the leaves really help especially because their leaves are so thin. but frankly, its just a personal preference.
I am guessing the soil is moist. Once the leaves start to wilt, there is no reverting it. Best to let it be. It will stabilize. humidity is it's best friend
Super informative! wondering where you found a terrarium that large tho? I'm from Ontario Canada and I can't seem to find one large enough to house mine
I got mines at target but I have seen others at home good stores, if you are handy, you can make one using a small fish tank as well. I have seen other ppl do it. @serpadesign
hi just bought my white fusion a month ago now it already dying when you put it in a box do you re pot it or u just put it as is?thank you for your reply
I’ve had my calathea for about a month now and the crispy leaves have begun! I have a glass container with a lid that is big enough for the plant but the leaves do touch the sides - will this damage the leaves? This plant is quite the diva, as you said, so I don’t know if I should be looking for something bigger to put the plant in!
get miticide and follow the directions, its usually spray it every 3 days until you don't see any more. my calathea loving friends spray their plants everytime they water as a preventative as well but if you have 50 of them that may be too much work
Hi, where to get those plastic box? I got a plastic jar but it's small for it. The leaves were touching the surface and I see many leaves have turned yellow :( after I put it inside the jar :(
it shouldn't get yellowing leaves because its touching the jar, that doesn't sound right to me? Its just a clear plastic storage box. you can get one any where really, ikea, walmart, target...
Thanks so much for the video I bought one online it came a lil curled at the tips then it completely dried out a week later hope I can restore it also how is the move I’m in New York and my family is in Tacoma considering moving out there
i’m gonna end up getting a terrarium for mine i think! mine prays a lot, but i’m wondering if it’s too often especially since it’s getting colder now. great video :) also, do you happen to have a video on your metal racks? looking to make a setup like that with grow lights for my succulents and i’m imagining exactly what you had set up in this video in the background
Thanks for watching! I have more info about my shelving setup in my urban jungle video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GO5KEpPAFX8.html
Hi Kelly! I did the same thing to mines! it will grow back! They always do! Its just a matter of how well i guess. mines seems to be struggling a bit and i think its cause i am not giving it enough light. will have to move it to a new spot and see is that helps =) Thank you for sharing! I hope yours grows back nicely for you!
i'm struggling with some mite infestation that's much more destructive tha spider mites. they're miniscule, looking like a dusting of flour .. seem to only affect some calatheas and palms .. and are the most destructive infestation i've ever had to deal with. after the more tame and domestic remedies couldnt wipe them out, i'm not looking what's the strongest systemic insecticide that you can still buy without requiring a special license.
My calathea warscewiczii is getting yellow borders and tips. I dont have a humidifier, but I spray distilled water 3x a day as it is summer here. Ive noticed that the soil is wet all the time I am touching it and thats why I ended up putting water only once a week, not 2 o 3 times. Do you think maybe this should be the problem?
So mine was thriving and great until I went away and asked my sister to take care of it when i went on a long holiday and it was dying. I had to cut all the dead cripy leaves, repot into a smaller one. So my struggle is this now - new leaves keep coming in, which is great sign right? but they're losing colours and becoming a sick albino plant. (sad) I tried putting bag over, but it just started becoming transparent so didn't think that was ideal. any ideas on how to save it??? helppp
After using for a wile an bol off water an humidifier and no risolse i decide to ripotting them some leaves come bag but lot off them are still curly drying and dying now I'm out off idea. Help what else can I do I don't want it to die 😩.
