It's the same problem with how Disney villains are portrayed. More often than not they are old or have some sort of physical disability. Kids see that and equate those traits with being "evil".

Also for the longest time, villains in children’s movies have dark hair and dark eyes, whereas the princess always has blond hair and blue eyes or overall lighter features

I’m 55yo (Generation X, not a Boomer lol) and you are making some really important points. Especially about kids seeing these sort of posts (and the world’s general over consumption of ‘things’). You are wiser than your years Hyram. And aging IS a privilege (one not given to everyone). 😊❤️❤️🇦🇺

When I hear "unproblematic" I think about the Picture of Dorian Gray, where the protagonist essentially ages well (lol) because all of the problematic things are absorbed by his portrait. But I agree with you, we should not think that beauty=being good. Maybe we should just find another word to describe a person who obviously takes care of herself like mrs. Hathaway, she probably doesn't smoke or drink heavily, wears sunscreen etc, but is also very privileged and has access to the best doctors. I won't lie, I'm almost 34 and seeing some fine lines on my face makes me think that maybe I'm not doing enough to age well. But then I remember I'm just a regular person and I look ok lol. (Sorry if this paragraph is a bit incoherent, English is not my first language)

I find it interesting that the criticisms about celebrities not aging well is directed more at a generation that also didn’t know (or wasn’t taught) the impacts of sun exposure, smoking, etc until later in life. Not to mention, the “fight against aging” is a no win battle. Either you age naturally and aren’t up to cultural beauty standards or you “have work done” and then people comment on it, as if it’s a moral failing. I distinctly remember women in my life telling me (as a young person) that someone looks good for their age and then adding “but I think she’s had some work done.” That sends the clear message: We don’t want you to look like you’re aging, but we’re also going to judge you if you do something about it. It’s honestly exhausting. Your take on this is very much appreciated. I would love to hear more about what you’re passionate about!

Can you please do more of these? I recently broke out beacuse of the season and lack of sleep. But I have been treating it like the end of the world leading to frustration and self criticism. Watching your video made me realise that I have also fallen pray to the idea of perfect skin all the time everywhere. I have also been getting anxious lately about my appearance since I will be hitting thirty this year. And I didn't even realize how seeing this kind of comparisons online have effected my thought process about the so called " looking young for one's age".I feel comfortable about my skin and appearance now thanks to you. And I also feel like the burden of thrities have been lifted in terms of appearance. Thank You. Love you❤

To me, aging is not sweating the small stuff. Enjoy the things that give you pleasure, but in moderation. Be kind to others. Offer wisdom and generosity. And care less about those who are careless about your inner peace. Be good to yourself. And please take care of your health, especially your skin!

I LOVED THIS! You can do any type of content, and it’s always entertaining, fun, respectful and refreshing. The only thing I disagree with is: giving compliments to people and worrying if others might take offense. I feel like if someone has trouble accepting a compliment that was given to someone else, they have some inner work to do. We’re all beautiful in different ways, so a compliment to someone different than us shouldn’t necessarily mean an insult to us. But I do understand where you’re coming from, and it’s very thoughtful and sweet 🥰❤️

100% loved this video :) I agree that society does capitalise on beauty and lack thereof. I think it is actually designed to do that when it comes to the so-called beauty industry - their business model is to make money off of people's insecurities - and to invent insecurities they can subsequently "fix", preferably with a product, or products, that require ongoing investment over one's lifetime. ie, the money train. So good to hear someone saying the things you're saying here, please do more :) with love from New Zealand.

I loved this video! I'm a folklore student, and it sort of reminded me of trolls in Swedish folklore. Stay with me, lol! In Swedish fairytales, trolls are depicted as these ugly creatures, right? Those are fairytales, told to entertain and not to be believed so to speak. In Swedish folktales however (told as a truth), if you were out in the forest and you met a really beautiful person, often a woman, you needed to be on your guard because she could be a troll. There was this notion that being "too beautiful" was something to be feared, something odd and something to be suspicious of. I'm obviously not saying that is something to be believed in either, just that there's been a parallel between morality and beauty for as long as we humans have existed.

Not commenting on someone’s physical appearance can be good but it can be bad too. I personally lost 145lbs and I will admit it was frustrating sometimes when people wouldn’t “notice/comment” on my progress… I feel like nowadays we have to be so careful that we forget positive/constructive feedback is good.
@beccak8166

Personally as someone with an eating disorder history I would never compliment someone's weight loss. Not just eating disorders, but many health conditions can cause weight loss. While your hard work is commendable, I don't want to compliment someone on their body when that's such a sensitive issue.
@archervine8064
@archervine8064 3 месяца назад
I can see that, but unless we are reasonably close I wouldn’t know if your weight loss was intentional or not. I have - thankfully - not had to deal with an ED but during my times of worst health I was at my lightest or my heaviest, depending on what exactly was going on. It’s a lot safer to say “that’s such a great color on you!” or “you HAVE to show me how you do your eyeliner!”, etc.

Ironically getting “older” has helped me accept aging even more. I remember being pretty stressed and unhappy in my twenties. Since turning 30 three years ago, I have found much more peace and comfort in myself as a person, and I’m hopeful that it’ll get even better with time, regardless of how my face ends up looking.

I do agree that we need to stop judging peoples' character by their physical appearance, and this is extra true for celebrities or anyone who has access to expensive treatments. That said, I also think there is truth to the idea that people who have chronically problematic viewpoints (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc) are also more likely to have chronically elevated stress with all the hate they express - and chronic stress DOES have a physiological impact on our health and the way we age. Obviously there is so much more nuance to this, but I think that is what this trend is expressing. Also PS, Henry Ford made factory automation and mass production the gold standard; the industrial revolution began in British textile mills in the late 1700s. The US took over about 100 years later with the production of steel, oil, and electricity. Ford was at the tail end of this era. ;)

I think you have a lot of good points, but when i think of "problematic behavior" especially in reference to celebrities, I think of excessive drinking, smoking, other drug use, which are all things that do age you faster than normal. So at a base level there is some truth to "unproblematic" = age slower than someone who is "problematic." But like you said that does not mean unproblematic = beautiful. Beauty is so much more complicated than just how you age.

Actually it's a fact that people who are not considered conventionally attractive receive harsher sentencing when convicted of a crime as opposed to a "beautiful" person. Even how the public reacts to a criminal is impacted by their appearance. So it is a real problem in society unfortunately. Though to be fair I really see that we are moving past that mentality as far as I'm aware that it.

I generally don't make negative comments about people's physical appearance. But I have noticed that people who LOVE to make comments about people's physical appearances aren't exactly the most attractive either, which I find interesting. I've always just taken the high road and not say anything, but I think this also contributes to the problem. Since no one challenges their behavior, it ends up becoming normal behavior and worse, it teaches other people that this behavior is ok. Long story short, sometimes people need to be taught a lesson and now, my intuition tells me that insulting them back about their physical appearance is usually the best way to get them to realize how hurtful their actions are.
