A good fixture and sequence of operations makes all the difference in a successful end result. The mini drill press upper frame presents just such a challenge. Take a Look.

I loved this episode! The thinking behind how to machine an unusual part like this was truly enlightening. There was a tremendous amount of useful information in this video. Most of which is not explicitly spoken, but comes from analyzing what you are doing and why. Joe, your talent as an educator can not be overstated.

The TV program, How It's Made, was one of my father's favorites to watch. After every episode he watched he would turn and say, "that is interesting but I would like to see how they made the machine's to make those." He was very creative in his own right, often finding solutions when everyone else was stumped. He seldom thought "inside the box."

GENIUS holding method and GENIUS locating method for those different bosses. In the shop wherein I learned the most we cut the leather tongues out of old boots that were being thrown away and used them as a cushion when clamping castings with undependable surfaces. Also great for clamping a stack of plates that aren't of precisely the same width by their edges to enable working them as a gang.

My first try at that part I crushed the larger diameter hole in the vise.🤦‍♂️So I ordered a second piece, and made a holder for it. It is a very fragile and awkward piece. That is a very well thought out fixture especially the block in-between the two distant holes for the top shafts. Thanks for the a and b description will definitely hang on to that one.

So true one can't cut what one can't hold. I would have used drill bushings in the fixture to guide the drills into the part. I bought a book in the early 1980s that explained the use of drill bushings in fixtures with delicate holes drilled in parts such as this one.

I am sure you have a shelf of them to go to for that new part that they will work for. You have shown a lot of common sense physics in this part that the new and upcoming machinists can pay attention to. Especially in deflection from crowding the tools shown here on this piece. We we even out flood coolant on it! ) ,,,, anyway, after watching the way you machined the model I started to wounder, how in the hell did they machine the big one,,,,,,and better yet just what kind of machine did they use to machine it! A 5" Lucas woud have been iike using a Bridgeport to line bore a Cat D8 motor! In any case, one hell of a job Joe. Brilliant Joe thankyou. I was really quite troubled with the single clamp and that you didn't leave any location pionts for positioning on your block. That risk of deflection was very high and then I realised ahh yes I'm used to working from a cardboard box of blunt / semi blunt end mills and slot drills ecause I'm only producing weld preparations and approximately placed recesses. All rough work. So please forgive me for that. Love your ingenuity Joe. Id like to think that I'm always practising to obtain precision but as I've detailed it's not necessarily always a possibility and sketchy at best for me. But every time I manage it I privately celebrate it to keep my spirits up 😁
