What people don't understand is when you're in the woods, you hear birds singing....some small animals making sounds, but as soon as all that stops like a deadstop, all you hear is the wind hitting through trees, that's a sign of a predator nearby lurking around somewhere.

Damn, Bob is one hell of a brother. Quits his job and searches a mountain for an entire year. Brotherly love right there at its finest.

Dogs, especially smart mature dogs, have an incredible sense of what's around them. I grew up in the sticks, and my dog could hear my dad's car from miles away because he would always know when he was coming home about 3 minutes prior to his arrival. There were plenty of other cars driving in the area so not only did he hear the car from miles away, he could distinguish the engine tones. A good dog is a sentinel, and when I'm feeling creeped out from listening to mr. ballen and I'm alone in the woods, I know that im safe cos I know my little sentinel is with me.

As someone whose spent alot of years hunting and camping the woods. I can say that some nights, and some early mornings, things can feel very off in the woods... not like your being stalked by an animal, but dare I say super natural? Don't get me wrong, most days are fine. But sometimes it feels like there's something watching you. And again, it's not animals or other people. They type of feeling that comes over you and chills you to the bone, makes you feel very uncomfortable.. stay safe out there folks.

I discovered this guy by accident and have been watching 3 hours a night all week, I’ve since got my friends & family hooked.

The common theme in many of these missing hiker stories is the one inpatient guy who always states "Hey guys I'ma gonna go up ahead just a little ways... Pro tip from a non pro: Don't be THAT guy.

A common denominator I wish was looked into way more often is the lack of animals or wildlife in the nearby area. So often there are claims that animals will AVOID the area where the person went missing, even with food sitting out. Makes you wonder if there is an undiscovered predator that literally causes all wildlife to avoid it in a certain radius.

When wild animals such as bears don’t even wander into a campsite to take unattended food like that you know something is very very wrong

Whenever a dog is totally cowering or going apeshit, that's a pretty good indication things aren't going well, need to stop whatever you're doing immediately and reevaluate that situation.

Knowing the brother spent an entire year calling out his brother's name on the mountain was the most heartbreaking part.

Listen to your dogs people. As a k9 handler I can tell you, their senses and instincts are beyond superior.

When I was young a old Indian taught me some tracking he always said listen to the land. Meaning if the area you are in suddenly goes silent there is a reason to be smart and careful. Listen and observe good advice.

The disappearances are troubling to start with, but the notable mention of the fact universally all the animals are aware of something being wrong is terrifying.

Unclr once told me a story of a time he went hunting alone it was a 5 day journey in Oaxaca Mexico he said on the 4th day he was in his tent getting ready to sleep and he said he heard this deep breathing like it was right above him keep in mind he had a 30-06 Springfield and a magnum right next to him but as he reached towards the magnum he felt like something had a big lump of anxiety over him and he remembers something circling his campsite and twigs cracking and a nasty odor that smelt like he said rotting fish or something close to that and eventually as he heard this thing run off he felt the anxiety leave and felt like he could actually move his body and grab his magnum as soon as this thing left my uncle in his 10 years of hunting said he had never expierenced anything like this and said it was one of the most terrifying things that had happened to him

Listen to your animals, people! They operate on a level far beyond anything we can.

When animals refuse to touch the food or campsite, you know it's something bad

I can’t begin to convey how genuinely fucking weird it is that wild animals didn’t ransack those camps for the food. Animals can smell that shit from so far away. It’s literally a thing in national parks to handle your food a specific way to minimize your chances of being raided. I’ve never been stumped by anything in Mr. Ballen’s videos before. I don’t even have ANY theories that’s how absurd it is😂

My honest opinion... Im part Cherokee - & I've always been told stories about lands that the natives avoid, especially at night. The land is either cursed or there are cursed spirits waiting for an unlucky person to step foot on the land.

Always, always listen to a dog. They can see, smell, hear and sense things that humans can't. I don't care how well equiped, trained, and experienced humans are. Dogs have detected cancer, know when someone is about to have a seizure, can feel an earthquake before humans can. And a dog loves you more than they love themselves. We should treat them with the utmost respect and care. ❤️

When everything gets quiet including no birds singing and your dog cowering it's time to get out of the park

A hiker went missing in the mountains near where I live on the same day we had my sons birthday party there Oct. 4th. It breaks my heart and I wish I had seen him there. They spent two weeks looking for him and haven't found anything. His family is heartbroken.

John, great idea connecting w Dave Paulides. I have followed him for years. Love him. Hes worked so hard to find out what happens to these people, bring closure to the family. Unfortunately it doesn't often happen. Dave is very compassionate and feelsbfor these families and the victims. His own son committed suicide during the pandemic at college, so he knows the pain of losing loved ones. He is so smart, and very committed to bringing it all out into the open. The fact that no animals went into those tents to eat literally free food, means something is near and the animals know it ain't nothing pretty.

His brother leaving his job to search this mountain for a whole year, and then to find someone else's missing hiker is so heartbreaking he was able to give another family closure. But it must've really affected him too, bc he won't know what that closure feels like.

Bob, from the third story, is a God damn hero! He gave closer to the family of that other hiker.

Love your stories! Thank you, for your military service. That feeling of something is wrong in the woods, is a scary feeling. As an adult I think I have lost most of that sense.I probably need to remember that how to pay more attention to it. I take care of my handicapped brother, he is blind, autistic, and non verbal. We camp, and hike 40 to 80 miles every month. Most of that is in the Kansas county side. So pretty easy, with little wildlife to worry about. If he was ever lost, I believe I'd do what Bob did. Look everywhere, and leave no stone unturned no matter the cost. Bob is a good brother.

Hearing that NO animals approached the areas where the people were camped, and that dog was so terrified...freaks me out. Animals sense threats that we sometimes can't, and see things that we can't; and our human senses and instincts don't seem to pick up on these weird threats either...so freaky.

I grew up in Alaska, spent the first 27 years of my life there. I’ve hunted and fished all around the state. I have heard “unnatural” screams from what I can only speculate to be a Sasquatch. Every man i know who has spent a significant amount of time in the woods can say the same. I’ve never seen anything. But I know what a bear sounds like, I know what all manner of dying animals in Alaska sounds like, and this ain’t that. It’s unnatural, and always followed by a feeling of dread and fear. All animals respond to its presence the same. These things are no joke man.

In most hiking / camp sites in my country, visitors are required to hire a local guide. Not only is it a source of income to the community, but we already have too many incidents of people getting lost in very eerie circumstances, like they think they've only been gone for a couple of hours but was actually being searched for for more than a week already; or people just going round and round in circles in a route that is supposed to be straightforward up or down, no forked roads. I've been separated from my group a lot of times and had experienced every other sound just stopping (as if someone covered my ears or i've entered an empty space), other times i've felt something's hiding in the trees and watching, even in broad daylight. There was a time when i even suddenly turned my head left and SMILED, then upon realizing i was alone in the trail, my buddies were either few meters behind or meters in front of me, there's no one on my left to smile at, really creeped me out. Like what came over me for those few seconds to react like that?! Oh, and if something doesn't feel right, an inkling of some sort from me or my buddies, we cancel/reschedule the trip. No question about it.

I remember almost 40 years ago myself and a friend went camping over night at a place down on a weir..it's like a creek with a spillway..at this weir there is an old convict road and an old cobb & co over night stay, this had long burnt down leaving only foundations..we camped below a built-up section of road below the foundations of the rest stop next to the water..my freind was an avid camper who 4×4 everywhere with his dog, an Australian blue heeler..his dog was about 5 years old and feared nothing..honestly you couldn't have had a more loyal or fearless companion..well that night, he started getting really spooked..he swam across the creek about 9.00 o'clock that night..got to the other side and started howling and barking at us..as if warning us about something..i mean he was freaked out..my mate Billy kept calling him and he would stop, only to start again 5 minutes later..we were in the middle of nowhere..eventually we had to pack upour gear and head back to our car, at 3/4 of a kilometre away..only after we'd got our gear to the car did he swim back across..a ran like a bloody train straight to the car..he satin the back and whimpered, until we got onto a tarred road..then he spun around and for the next hour just stared out the rear window, occasionally growling..never went back there.

I was almost 411'd at the Judge Branch Campsite at the Frozenhead State Park in TN. It was May, 2017. A completely black human form appeared in front of me as I was shaking out my tent. It stayed there for about 10 seconds and then disappeared. I had stumbled back at first as I thought that a bear had snuck up. I tried to grab for my bear spray. By the time I had the spray out, it was gone. For the next hour, I could feel the life draining from me. I could sense that it was still there and I honestly believed that I'd be dead if I remained there in the dark. I didn't know why I felt that way, I just knew that death was real and close. With daylight fading, I tried to pack my gear. I'd pack for a bit and drop to the ground exhausted...over and over again. Finally packed (I should have just run initially, but thinking was getting harder by the minute), I crawled to the nearby trail and I forced my shaking body to stand. Luckily, I was only two miles from my car. I kept looking behind me because I felt like it was following me. With about one hundred yards to go, something punched me from behind. It hit my backpack so hard that I nearly fell. I turned and there was nothing. I could only turn back to the trail and keep moving forward. I crossed a small bridge and reached my car, finally. I stood in the fading light and I remember that between some weird exhaustion and mental fog, I could hardly figure out what to do. I was 200 pounds of gym-trained muscle and I was alone with only weakness and terror. I got the trunk open and barely got my gear in. I noticed then that where I hard strapped my bedroll, tent other things, it was all scrambled and barely hanging there. I fell into the driver's seat panting. Another odd thing was that my GPS would not work. I was new to the area and I had to guess on the way home. Miles away, the GPS finally kicked in. Shaking, I stopped at a drive through in an attempt to get my energy back and got home. It took me a couple of days before I could tell my wife what happened. I actually went back there with my wife for a day trip a few weeks later with her two grown daughters. I needed to confront my fear and perhaps prove that something was there. We told the kids nothing about it. After a few hours of snacks and tea, we started to pack. My wife's younger daughter, who is in the Autistic spectrum started to get fearful and would not say what was bothering her. Later, it was all we could do to keep up with her as she raced back to the car. This was especially surprising as she is quite heavy. I now believe that others that have gone 411 may have had the same sort of encounter with these dark preditors. I later researched the campsite and I found a story concerning hikers finding the same Judge Branch site with expensive abandoned gear and bits of gear on the trail as if someone grabbed their stuff and ran for it. It's strange that not even their clothes are found. My first thought was that a dogman got these people. But some sort of clothing would have surely been found. It's crazy. How do people just vanish without a trace. If perhaps they fell into some sort of hole I the ground you would think that someone would have found that hole by now. Praying for the families of these people. That's got to be hard.

Its surprising how quickly and easily you can get lost close to camp. All the trees look the same and you can't see through them. Have had a few close calls when i was younger in Australia.

The fact that animals are Not rummaging through these camps is so confusing

I have lived in Montana for many years, and have been to Glacier National Park more times then I care to count. And people seemingly vanishing happens a lot. I’ve stumbled across a few abandoned campsites like Patrick’s. Of course there are many theories people here believe. I personally don’t put much stock in anything that’s mere speculation. But I remember a time me and my siblings stumbled across a campsite that was similar to Patrick’s. So me and my siblings had the family dog and were on our way back from a hike when we stumbled across this campsite. Normally we would’ve turned around and left because poking around someone’s campsite is a good way to have a gun pointed at you. But my sister noticed the tent was in bad shape and got it into her head maybe someone needs help and went to check. Meaning me and my brother had to follow her because we weren’t about to leave her behind. So we tentatively poke about the camp and we notice two things. One, this campsite looks like no one has been here in at days. The embers to the fire are cold to the touch but it’s evident the person didn’t leave because all their shit is there. And two, this person had food left out that was untouched. So we decide we should leave in case the person comes back when our dog stiffens and looks to our right, hackles raised, looking ready to attack. And this was a dog who rarely if ever got aggressive. But there was no one or nothing that was approaching us. But this dog is getting more and more agitated . So I follow his line of sight to where a bunch of pine trees were and a football field’s length away from where we were and I immediately got the sense I was being watched and we were NOT welcome there. And I could tell my siblings felt the same way because without saying a word we turned around and left. For the rest of the day the dog was on edge which was very unlike him.

One of the thing that I learned from these kind of stories that, if your mother say that she has a bad feeling about something that you plan to do, you should cancel.

When a dog knows something you don’t. You absolutely need to trust that dog’s instincts.

I live on a sixty acre horse farm with an additional 137 acre woods attached. My closest neighbor is a mile away as the crow flies and 2.5 by road. Some nights those woods are so animated it seems to be a roaring sound. Night birds, coyotes, foxes, insects all add to the cacophony. Then every so often there ISS a night when you can hear a single drop of water. No animal noise whatsoever. It is really weird. My livestock guardian dogs even are quiet. Those nights, I lock my doors and windows which is unusual and light up the house, close the blinds, pull the drapes and hope I don't get called in for an emergency (X-Ray tech at the county hospital) as there is no way I am going out the door.

Parents know best, and mother's intuition is even stronger.

Whats strange with all of these cases is someone is drawn out by something or someone and end up disappearing. Like something is almost calling or luring them. That on top of animals completely avoiding these areas...

The fact that the campsites are never disturbed in itself weird and creepy, almost supernatural

There is definitely something paranormal and or multidimensional happening out in these forests. No doubt about it.

Everyone and their grandmothers knows that Glacier Bay National Park is the home of a Bigfoot or a Yeti or something!

Imagine being Bob, finding those remains of the other missing hiker, the heartbreak he must have felt, but simultaneously the feeling of relief that you finally have closure. As painful as that closure may be, you at least have found your brother and can lay him peacefully to rest... Only to have that cathartic feeling of finally knowing what happened to his brother ripped away when he discovers it's not him. Heartbreaking stuff.

I believe there are portals that people stumble into - especially at night. I, along with a friend, saw one on a trail we had hiked hundreds of times before. That portal looked like shimmering water but it did not reach the ground, it was literally a foot above the ground. So, what’s there in daylight is there in the dark. We approached it slowly - first slipping our hands inside the shimmering. Nothing happened and we decided to enter to see what it was. We strode through arm in arm and when fully through it, nothing appeared familiar to us. It was as if we had walked into a totally different trail. We were spooked and tried to turn around and walk back through but it was useless. We could not make it through until we tried it arm in arm as we did when we went through initially. Suddenly we were back on the familiar trail. Turning around to look at the shimmering wall - it was totally gone. We reported what we had experienced to a cousin of mine who was Park Superintendent. We took him and another ranger to the area where we first encountered it. Still gone. They closed the trail to conduct an investigation. The year was 1971. After a number of years went by, and I asked this cousin of mine why he seemed to believe us, and his reply, “your report was but one out of 20 or more reports from other hikers repotting the very same thing.” We never hiked that trail again.

not quite as remote as Glacier Bay National park, but the Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska is probably the scariest place to go missing that I can think of. The extremely thick brush, the size, and absolutely treacherous terrain is enough to keep most people from going too far off the beaten path, especially when they know they’re not experienced enough. But that forest is the kind of place that is so damn old and untouched, when you’re there by yourself it makes you feel like the forest itself is watching you. It’s the place where you 100% never leave if you get lost.

Bob leaving everything behind to go look for his brother was one of the most heart touching things I have ever heard ❤ .. grief and pain can redefine who we are, so can determination! ... at times we end up finding strength we didn't know existed . . Really hope he can find some closure and peace to eventually move on with his life ☹ ..

It's a bad omen when animals dont want your food.

I live in Chattanooga tn, I go hiking All the time. The rangers tell stories of old native Americans who hide out. Live in the mountains and underground. They always warn you, make sure you back before it’s dark. They have stories of big foot, mountain men and natives. You should get a hold of the rangers at greeters falls. They will tell you some stories.

Before the 2004 tsunami struck Thailand, beach goers remembered seeing the birds leaving the trees and not returning. The chirping stopped. In the aftermath of the tsunami, rescuers didn’t find deceased wild animals. Upon further investigation, they did find them atop the mountains surrounding the beach. They theorized that the birds and other creatures somehow sensed the impending disaster and moved further inland and up into higher trees on the sides of the mountains. They survived. The people below did not. That’s when I first learned it’s very important to be aware of the wildlife around you. If they’re hunkering down and not going about their normal activities and aren’t making noise, then something is wrong. Also, learn to read the sky and the clouds. They can predict bad weather before it strikes. Also, your dog can sense a LOT more than you, trust your dog. And trust your gut. Trust your goosebumps and trust that "feeling" you get when you know something/someone is wrong/watching you. Listen to nature and listen to your dog.

When your dog hiking companion don’t want to explore nor go with its owner and just wants to sit in the tent it’s time to get up and leave immediately

Went camping deep in the rockies with my friend and dog and like the dog in the story I just had this weird nauseous feeling my dog refused to leave the tent and my friend said he kept hearing whispers as he was chopping wood but we didn't wait around we packed up our stuff and left I still don't quite feel right deep in the woods since then.

Friends always ask if I want to go camping and I'd tell them maybe one day. After watching Mrballens videos, the answer is now and will always be "hex nah"!

I laughed when he showed a picture of a pug when he talked about the dog. I highly doubt the dog was a pug. They consider getting off the couch to be an adventure in itself.

I live in maine.spent my childhood in the woods.spent ALOT of time in northern Maine solo camping I'm 51 now so many years of forest time.there is a presence in the woods sometimes.unseen mostly but there always.the only people whove seen it don't live to tell. I was in Baxter state Park in the early 90s alone on a hiking trail and out of nowhere the woods fell silent and all my hair stood up on my neck and a audible voice in my head said leave now.i left ...quickly.also have heard whispering at night in my tent.miles from anyone.look around and no one's there. Not sure we'll ever know.but I know now when you get that feeling just leave.

When wild animals won’t touch the area or tent to get food that is easily accessible…… THAT speaks loud and clear “DANGER”. Bears DGAF about anything or anybody so when THEY won’t go near a tent full of food you KNOW it’s gotta be something so threatening and beyond anything we could understand. That’s a big NOPE.

As someone who lives in Alaska, l dont think lm going camping again.

The fact that animals aren’t goin back to the site afterwards makes me assume something extraterrestrial happened.

I spent a fair amount of time in my 20's & 30's backpacking through Desolation Wilderness. Sierra Nevada. Loved it. But after listening to this story I'm beyond grateful to have hiked out.

I feel like something out there is big enough, strong enough and scary enough to keep other animals away that's the thing that seems to be the common in these stories

Steve was taken out by his new hiking buddies and never actually made it to the mountain at all. The dog and all the extra detail was added just to lower suspicion on the other guys

Steve on a mountain trail: Lasts all of 1 day. Bob traversing every square inch of the mountain: Lasts a whole year. That's a mystery story in itself.

Isn’t it odd that Steve goes missing in a matter of a few hours, never to be seen again! But his brother Bob summits the mountain 150 times, walks 2500 miles and always comes home! How is it possible someone can spend that much time in the woods and nothing ever happens to them?

Bob searched the entire mountain for a year, but whatever got Steve didn't get Bob. He searched every inch of the mountain and yet, nothing befell him. Curious. Even hikers and campers who go into these areas armed to the teeth frequently go missing. So taking a .44 Magnum revolver, while highly advisable, isn't enough to guarantee one's safety. Whatever gets these people, gets them even though they're armed.

They had a case in Russia, from back in the 1940s. Eight people went out camping. They never returned and they sent out search party. Found most of them naked and frozen to death. Very bizarre.
