STILL WORKS IN 2024 I bought a HP stream 14-cf2112wm yesterday. I needed something for work since I work online. this laptop was the only one available that was within my limited budget. glad for this video cos the memory is trash. I'm good to go now.
My brother gave me his late 2019/early 2020 Stream 14 CB164. Had to replace the battery and while I had it apart I upgraded the BIOS to F.23 then swapped in a GSKill 16Gb DDR4 SODIMM I had hanging around. Works just fine.
Very good detailed video bro. You think the CPU is upgradeable? If so, is it worth it? And will the entire motherboard need to be replaced? Thank you. I bought the model (14-cf2121wm) for my daughter for 129.00.
129 isn’t bad at all! The CPU is not upgradable in this laptop. You’d probably need to either use a heat gun and replace the processor or swap out the main board entirely which really isn’t worth it in my opinion. At that point, you’d be better off looking at media consumption laptops with Full HD displays and i3 processors.
Hey idk if you’ve answered this already but I just got mine and it’s SLOW lol . I came across this video can I do the same memory chip brand but the 32gb one ?
I’m new to all this computer stuff but I also have the same laptop which I got from Walmart but I just want to be able to play my steam games with good performance like vice city or gta 5
Unfortunately, this laptops chipset is quite underpowered for your desired task. Not to mention the storage situation but, it does leave room for desire in terms of games. However, that won’t stop you for tweaking your games for possibly playable performance! Instead there are, in fact, plenty of fun and FOSS games that work great on this laptop and computers with a similar chipset!
hello, thanks for the info. I want to ask a question. I'm wondering if I insert the small size ssd that I sent the link below directly instead of the wi-fi card, will it work? Its size is exactly the same as the wi-fi card, 22×30 mm.
I personally have not tried this myself, but if the ssd is the same size and same interface it should work A-Ok! Just remember that you lose Wi-Fi functionality.
My mother has the exact laptop, I want to upgrade to 16g memory., do you know if I can go from a four gig to a 16 gig and also I didn’t catch how many slots
Hello! There’s one slot. Many here have had success with 16, but I can’t try as I don’t have any parts for that. As per intel’s website, the maximum ram supported by the processor is 8 GB ram. Hope I could help!
In theory, yes you could. However, you would have to swap the wifi card for a suitable SSD thus rendering your laptop with no wireless connectivity. Luckily there is ample room for added components inside the 14" chassis such as the SSD. You can use a USB WiFi dongle to restore wireless connectivity. Since the 64 Gigabyte eMMC drive never bothered me, I haven't attempted the upgrade but I have run Fedora linux from a SATA SSD over USB 3 without a hitch which gave me plenty of extra space to leave my main linux install intact.
The specific stick I used is no longer in circulation, but really any laptop DDR4 stick running at 2666mhz will be to totally fine. That’s most modules nowadays and you’d probably be able to find one at a decent price. Have a good one!
i wonder if anyone was able to make that m.2 m key slot working on one of those laptops because 32 or 64 gb of emmc storage is rather minimalistic meenwhile the pinout of m.2 slot is staring you into eyes on the pcb, the socket was never soldered but ...will it work? edit************** after checking the only boardview i could find for stream 14 in ax chasis, at least for 2gb model (the one with integrated ram) m.2 slot for ssd is fully routed to support sata ssd over m.2 slot. it would be wierd if the left footprint for m.2 connector if none of the signals were routed to it on the sodim board revision. cpu has 2 sata lines and one goes to emmc the other all over the board to the m.2 slot that only missing connector and screw for the drive. the same style connectors are on macbook >nvme adapters. so i might get one of those laptops just to check if i can make it an ssd one
ola amigo, estive analisando essa possibilidade tambem, reparei que tem a conexão ali ou seja a pinagem, porem até o momento ninguem fez o tal procedimento, vi que vc fez uma enorme pesquisa e pergunto , teve sucesso ?
@@RossPotts Heh I saw this at Target… okay so I found your processor, is it the AMD 3020e? If so, AMD doesn’t say in the spec sheet what the max config is. Exploring uncharted territory is good and nothing is stopping you from trying. I’d be more than happy to hear your results!
Hello Sir, Will this method works if I upgrade my ssd if there is a fault in keyboard? Because there is a fault in keyboard in this laptop. Then if I upgrade that will it work as usual? Will a problem occur?
The keyboard and the SSD are two separate components, one will not affect the other unless there is a deeper fault at hand. Usually, upgrading the SSD won’t fix the keyboard as most times it’s an issue with the hardware component of the laptop. In your case the keyboard. Replacement parts are not to expensive and this laptop is dirt simple to maintain.
Yes, but you must bypass the eMMC and remove the WIFI module to replace it with an adapter and an NVME SSD. USB Dongle for WIFI and added Software Boot Utility Duet with rEFInd to handle booting to an SSD. There are videos on how to do it on RU-vid.
There is no SSD onboard, instead it’s a non user replaceable eMMC flash chip that requires intensive rework if you’d want to upgrade it. Alternatively you can replace the Wi-Fi card with an SSD to reach the desired storage capacity. If all else doesn’t work for you, I suggest using an SD card for extra data storage!
I am not really sure. The one shown in the video can be upgraded. As for yours, I suggest you follow the same steps I took to disassemble it and check it out for yourself.
excuse me sir, i have this one some one give me for study and i have to permision to upgrade windows 11 but i have hp stream 14 is touchscrean ,, if i upgrade will work touchscreen in windows 11, thank you i hope you can answer my question,, god bless you
Hey there! I believe that the touchscreen should work under Windows 11 so long as you have the driver software. Make sure you have them ready as I have had trouble in the past with that type of thing.
Thanks for sharing this. I have a HP Stream 14ax030wm laptop running Windows 10. It never has enough disk space to update Windows. I was going to toss it, but I decided to try upgrading the RAM to 8G and buying a 32 SD card to use as a disk space extension. When I pulled the RAM card, it’s marked “4GB 1Rx8 PC3L 12800S”. Does the PC3L indicate this is a DDR3 card? I am finding conflicting info online. Any insight on this issue? Thanks for any light you can shed.
PC3L does mean DDR3 and the L means Low-voltage - Also: The HP Stream 14 has DDR3 and DDR4 models starting in 2014 to 2016 and later I believe and an example would be 14-cb120ca 4JC83UA 4JC83UA#ABL and are small numbers on the bottom shell as model/series/part number to search specs and upgrade-ability. “4GB 1Rx8 PC3L 12800S” is DDR3 Low-voltage 1600Mhz 1Rx8 1R is a single-rank module -x8 is the number of banks in the module. For the example model above it uses 4 or 8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM as HP states it can. Hope this helps someone as Windows 11 needs ram for advertising, though most of that is tamable anyways.
Oh man I’ve always wanted one of these! After looking at the service manual, no you can’t. These employ the smaller footprint which means the main board is in a different form factor from its big brother. This size doesn’t have space for a slot so instead one RAM chip is soldered near the processor. The best configuration for these things seem to be the N4000/4GB/64GB model, while ones with lower specs than this one are employed in older models.
my stream has soldered ram. i've seen peple solder more ram on to stuff before and this video was the top result when searching. defintley not the video i'm looking for.
Unfortunately, the way that the stream 11 notebooks are designed won't allow for a ram upgrade. The chips are soldered onto the mainboard making it waaay harder to upgrade but not entirely impossible. Hope I could help!
You can swap the WiFi card with a larger SSD, or even upgrade the WiFi itself too. But other than that, there’s not much else you can do. If you need WiFi and don’t want to do the swap, SD cards work really well especially in this machine with a full size SD Card reader.
@@BB-fj5yeNo worries, we all gotta start somewhere! Now heres a crash course: Depending on what you are using for animation, the requirements for RAM and storage differs. Depending on the size of your animation projects, you'll need more ram and storage. RAM is temporary memory your streambook uses to store temporary program data, like your animations, and then can save them to your internal storage, the final product. The resolution of your animation greatly impacts these values so its safe to say the more the better. You can easily get by using a USB flash drive to store your projects or simply manage your internal storage well as its limited, especially when you use it for more than one thing. RAM will fluctuate as you use your device or have more programs running at once (Animation Program, Web Browser, etc.) but it clears out once you close some programs. If you have any more questions I'll be here. Good luck!
Really any DDR4 8GB 2400 laptop stick should do the trick. Here is the one I used: www.bestbuy.com/site/pny-performance-8gb-2400mhz-ddr4-c17-so-dimm-notebook-memory-black/6346312.p?skuId=6346312
hey bud so i could not find it in bestbuy would this be the correct one? PNY 8GB Performance DDR4 2400 MHz SO-DIMM Notebook Memory Module orderd it from a different place
The maximum amount of RAM this machine supports is 8GB. There really isn’t anything else that is upgradable in there unless you do some extensive rework.
I really dont know! I have the same exact laptop and I am thinking of buying a 16gb ram stick. Ive removed S mode from my laptop and people in the comments are saying ram cant be installed to stream laptop. I really want to play with good roblox performance so people let me know on what i can do!!! 😀
16 GB Ram sticks won’t work on this laptop as the processor isn’t compatible. You can however, use lpddr4-2400 8GB ram sticks. In fact I am using one of those in my stream book right now! Hope all works for you!
Hey Steve I appreciate your video. Can you tell me what model I have and what my Max Ram Gb can be? Device name LAPTOP-TNBQN2S7 Processor Intel(R) Celeron(R) N4020 CPU @ 1.10GHz 1.10 GHz Installed RAM 4.00 GB (3.82 GB usable) Where can I find which model I have and max Ram Capabilities? thanks
Sorry for the late response! Your CPU supports the 8GB RAM upgrade, however I was unable to find your specific laptop model. I cannot give you a definitive yes that your model supports it however I can say if it looks like my model shown here it'll work a treat. Given the specifications, I am pretty sure it'll work fine. Hope I could help!
@@sillystev0n it would be a replacement eMMC to be soldered on the board! Possible but may not be worth it $$ wise! Found a purple HP Stream to-day in some tossed out junk! Looks like it works but would need a factory reset!
Sorry for the late response! In this specific laptop, the highest possible configuration is 8 Gigabytes of DDR4 Memory. Of course you won’t be able to purchase this configuration as you would have to perform this upgrade yourself!
I had one got it for free, of course the older generation and it was total crap. I tried linux and chromium os, with dwm it ran quite well and chromium os semi well. It is like an old netbook with almost the same specs, but a newer generation and worse cooling. Nice video👍
I’d love one of the older streams if I got one for free! I be tinkering with low end machines and that makes me wish I hadn’t sold it off with other junk I had. I have to agree the older ones weren’t that great, even by RPi standards lmao. I actually used on of those for a while before I decided to switch to a C2D.
you can buy a adapter that would replace the wifi card with a aftermarket wifi card and its got a m.2 slot added to it so that your able to add m.2 storage
@@StankyAssJay That’s the documented max anyway and the largest supported. I have read that some people have gotten more but I don’t think you need anything larger than that for this caliber of machine.
@@FacansyProductions Short answer, no. Long answer, yes. You would need to ditch your wifi card in order to fit an NVME drive to get that succulent storage!
Now, if only there were a few extra Micro SDHC slots available for the drive space 🤔 P.S. When you're trying to wake up a computer, I'd recommend hitting the >shift< key(s) a few times, rather than the Spacebar. It won't modify anything that you're doing on the screen, or activate any process that's waiting for you to 'press any key to continue'
I keep seeing conflicting results on whether you can update the ram in these or not. Same model number I'm looking at so I'm glad I will be able to get it to at least 8gb.
@lbialk We’re not talking about different versions, though. Our comments were in reference to the model in the video. Brett even said “same model number”, which prompted my response.
@lbialk …I said people didn’t do their research in response to a comment about this specific model. You misunderstood. Also, you’re being argumentative and trying to explain something to me that I obviously already knew (considering I did my research and replaced my own ram). If you wanted to share that info with others, you should have done it on a separate comment. Again, you somehow misinterpreted and generalized my comment. Come off it already.
@@maggsy404 The confusion stems from people not looking at the actual model number of their laptop. “HP Stream 14” isn’t the model number, it’s just the name of the model. If people want to know if their HP Stream 14 has upgradable ram slots, they need to look up the model number itself for confirmation.
Just found a hp 14-cb112wm and want to know if I can also do the same thing like the video or if I can even upgrade anything on it. Just started getting into this sort of stuff.
Now that is a hard question, you can replace the wifi card with (i think) and m.2 or NVME ssd, although you need to get an extension cable. Luckily the laptop has quite a bit of free space in its chasis so it should be fine. About the wifi though… Alternatively you can piggyback on the USB 3 bus with a hard drive or ssd for external boot mediums. But if you are hurting for storage on the tiny *emmc there are tricks in both Linux and Windows to move system folders to an external storage devices. Like /Home or My Documents to an SD card for example.
@@sillystev0n i was thinking the same thing (about replacing the wifi card with m.2 cable adapter and using a usb external wifi ) currently have ours running linux mint 20. 3 cinnamon version and a 32gb micro sd card giving us a bump up to 64gb of storage 50gb available .will be upgrading to 8 gb memory from the stock 4gb of ddr4.thats first on the list,we just got it yesterday .aunt gave it to us because she had forgotten windows password over a year ago and got a new laptop, works great for watching netflix/disney/youtube and for vnc with the kids raspberry pi! would love to see more videos exploring the possibilities of the hp stream ,is there a limit to how big micro sd we can use?
@@stockmarketsantaclaus1110 I’ve read the max is 256 gigabytes, although in my opinion that’s overkill lol. Also I use my stream much of the same way! I have Debian 11 with the XFCE desktop as a jukebox to play all my mp3s, some virtualization here and there, watch Disney and RU-vid in my workshop where I don’t want a laptop with an open spaces for dirt or sawdust to get in!
@@sillystev0n I think it would be fun to try and connect a graphics card the same way with the riser cable in the wifi slot, and we definitely gonna have to experiment with the max for the m.2 storage, found a 120gb micro SD card in a older broken phone this morning and that is working well so far, have a pretty good feeling that the m.2 is going to have better read/write times/ unfortunately for me and like most people money is definitely a issue, hell I'm so broke it's hard to pay attention most the time.
@@stockmarketsantaclaus1110 If it is something you’d like to see, I can totally look into it. As for the m.2, I honestly don’t need more storage in a laptop like that, I use Debian on the thing which doesn’t use much in terms of storage so for my needs (which mostly consists of reading and writing to external devices) works great. In the future when eMMC eventually does degrade the best option would definitely be an M.2 drive!
my model of this laptop is quite different because in the majority of review I see of this same laptop it doesn't have a thunderbolt port and mine does have one also mine have two slots for ram memory while the majority only haves one I know it because the windows task manager can give you datils of how much ram can your device support mine is a hp 14-dq2509la and I thought maybe I can get a 16 gb ddr4 stick of ram to get 20 gb of memory but i cannot find any teardown of this exact same model I know that the model you're upgrading is not the same as mine because the vessels on my computer seems to be smaller so maybe ill be documenting the upgrading process of my pc
For gaming, really depends on what you play since the cpu is quite limiting in terms of gaming. I can play old school RuneScape, some Roblox, and a few of my steam games like Changed, Half Life, and portal. In layman’s terms, the CPU holds back what you can do on a machine like this. If you get creative you can do quite a bit on these netbooks and the memory really helps with sandbox usage!
Here's the kicker: If you ever get this laptop and you installed windows 11 on this laptop and not upgrade this memory. The laptop will have the performance of a 3.00Ghz Pentium 4 with 1 gigabyte of RAM with windows 7 installed. And trust me that performance is either mediocre or decent.
No, your model doesn’t support the upgrade. It came from an older generation. However, if you have the correct memory specification you might be able to. The Celeron n4000 supports a maximum of 8GB of RAM, but the chipset may not. I recommend using a Linux distro like Manjaro or standard Arch Linux as they both are easier on a systems resources, and will help with your storage situation. Another possible solution is using Google’s new Chrome OS Flex or Brunch it for a chrome book experience. This laptop is very similar to many chrome books of today and is very performant under Chrome OS. Hope this helped!
@@sillystev0nLinux ftw on these FOR SURE. I run MX Linux on an older N4000-gen Stream with only 4GB of non-upgradable RAM, the 32GB eMMC SSD for the OS hard drive, and a 256GB MicroSD card for my user/Home folder and as long as I remember not to have huge pile of browser tabs running at once it's 100% completely usable, even daily (it is what I use as my daily driver when I am traveling...though I do have a Lenovo ThinkPad at home as my 'good' laptop). Linux runs SOOO much better on it than bloated Windows and everything worked perfectly!
Is it possible to upgrade storage internally using a m.2 or SSD? I Was wondering because I had taken mine apart to take a look at what I can upgrade, and I didn't see any m.2 slots.
It’s possible to do so by swapping out the WiFi card, and if you are bold, you can use a PCIe switch to keep both. If you have heat gun skills, you can easily source and upgrade the eMMC!
These laptops where designed to be entry level windows machines, but on the plus side, the intel celeron n4020 is actually pretty good. More than capable of doing a handful of things, I already own a few laptops that have the same chipsets as the HP Stream. A little bit of Debian, or if you still need windows, Revision OS is a great choice!
Thanks for this, I've been wanting to get one of these but the 4GB of ram was holding me back. I really want a processor than can handle 16GB,, can you get that in an HP Stream?
Most old versions with 4G can only handle up 8G. You can check which RAM you can use for your laptop by visiting HP website i bought a 16G but it didnt gonwith my stream 14Cx1
Bought this same laptop from Wal Mart earlier today. Does anyone think it could run programs for creating/minting NFTs if I upgrade to 8gb of RAM or should I opt for something more powerful? I can agree with the guy in video..this laptop stock 4gb ram can hardly handle web browsing.
if you simply use it only for youtube and browsing if you install android x86 on there they run surprisingly fast and im using one now a lower end spec one (13-c101na) and itl run youtube 720p60fps or 1080p30fps smoothly and general browsing / whatsapp etc is perfectly usable. what i also did was get shut of the thermal pad and replace it with thermal grizzly liquid compound which with no fan made a huge improvement. unforunately the one i have has no memory upgrade like yours nor any m.2 sata or any other expandable hardware other than micro sd slot. but its a good cheap worthless worry free beater laptop for general hoisting around type of entertainment. to be honest if it breaks gets stolen or lost etc i couldnt give a rats either.
I installed new ram into mine (8gb as well) and the system reads it just fine seems to work and everything except now my laptop will randomly blue screen crash every now and then, any reason why? Or anyone know how to fix this?
I got an hp 360 pavilion and the sd card can be inserted on the right side without tearing it down I think I might not have to do it or i might have to idk I just need more storage since my computer since it comes with 118gb stock
@Yeye_McGee but where is the slot to install that ssd? Or is the same slot for RAM and SSD? I disassembled the laptop and couldn't find the original ssd in it.
Unfortunately, upgrading the ram will not allow you to play games of that nature. The processor just isn’t up to the task. Some older games I play work great, as well as the less demanding titles. You’d be better off purchasing a more capable laptop for that.
I’m sure it can, mileage may vary depending on the experience you are playing. I’ve played a little bit under grapejuice with Arch Linux and it was alright, but the Microsoft store version probably run better on this guy. Hope I could help!
I have seen a lot of comments saying only certain models can be upgraded. How or where can i find out if the one ill be receiving on monday can be upgraded at all? If what im seeing is correct its only a 64 gig HD and id like to upgrade that.
Hey there! The storage itself (64GB eMMC) cannot be upgraded unfortunately however the RAM can, which is what I focused on here. There is no real straightforward way to upgrade the internal storage, but you can definitely use an external SSD and install any OS you’d like on that.
Hey! I got an older model 2018. Is there a specific one i need rather than just googing RAM 8gb please 😂x thanks for a easy video!! (You should do tiktoks)
What kind of Ram would I need for my Hp stream 14 intel celeron n4120 laptop ? It has 4Ram trying to upgrade to 8Ram but don’t know the exact number to order the correct one
This is the one I used. Should work a treat! PNY Performance 8GB DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz (PC4-21300) CL19 (Compatible with 2400MHz or 2133MHz) 1.2V Notebook/Laptop (SODIMM) Computer Memory RAM - MN8GSD42666 a.co/d/4SOkF7a
I have this but it says celeron N4020, it has the same specs (RAM etc) will I be able to use the same PNY 8GB upgrade? Thanks for the video and any help
Sorry for the late response, but heres what you have to do in order to use an external drive (your SD card in this case) for Windows Update. This should apply to both Windows 10 and 11 but if it doesn't try to apply these steps in your scenario. Step 1: Go to Settings and select Windows Update (Update and Security for Windows 10) Step 2: Select "Fix Issues" under the Windows Update panel (Both 10 and 11 are the same!) Step 3: Back up any files that may be important on the SD card, then insert the card into the reader and select it from the drop down menu that should appear. Step 4: Click "Next" and let Windows Update do its thing. Just follow any prompts as usual! Once it finishes, you can remove the SD card, or use it normally. Hope I could help!
