You CANNOT Trust Mainstream Game Reviews

Mainstream Video Game Reviews (Especially pre-release versions) are often based on a timed demo, a curated vertical slice of content, or an entirely separate build of the game.
This may seem (on the surface) to be of no consequence but when the reviews are designed around a product that is being altered exclusively for the benefit of media, while flaws, and drawbacks are being hidden away, it creates a problem of trust, and authenticity.

Honestly I dont think Mainstream should refer to the establishment anymore. Isnt that a misnomer at this point? Also it is providing power to people that at this point have none. I think the Mainstream games reviews are now the alternative content creators, somewhat you, Skill up, gameranx (even though they like to steal content.), and many of the other youtubers and twitch content creators. I mean, the mainstream should be whoever get the most eyes right? and by far that isnt gonna be polygon, kotaku and other gaming sites is it? I think at this point they should be referred to as establishment or corporate media and not the mainstream media, they simply dont hold the views and beliefs of the mainstream public do they? Their reach simply isnt what it should be to be considered that anymore. I suppose IGN could be, but IGN i feel is slowly dying because their ability to monetize is not nearly enough to maintain their level of employees. I think tim pool said it best that small platform is more effective at being profitable in this new age and that corporate media will slowly die out because it will be harder and harder to maintain profitability. A single guy can pick up a camera, make a video, edit and upload videos on youtube and make the same amount as an entire corporation. So I ask you, at what point of the corporate medias collapse will you stop calling them the mainstream and start to calling yourself the mainstream?

You should also talk about RU-vidr that yet early access and free stuff from gaming company, some won't even tell their audience. Recently Larian studios invited RU-vidr to their studios from the Pannell from hell in a all pay vacation. There is big studios that doe that with some RU-vidr and you won't make me believe that doesn't affect the review. Creative assembly did something similar with early access, free stuff and game with the RU-vidr couldn't gave their opinions about the game before 1 day before launch. Futhermore they cried now about Warhammer 3 but don't understand they were part of the problem because they agree to the terms. This is a broken system, like the media and the Biden administration. "It's not his fault, he as Irish Blood." The west is doom in gaming and politically.

I like the term "dino media" because it implies they will be extinct like the dinosaurs because they are stuck in the older pattern of thinking which is they think we are like baby boomers and just go to one source for all our information and expect us to automatically believe what they say without actually looking into the claims they make to check for propaganda and spin. These days kids are much more paranoid of dino media because they have been caught lying many times. You don't continue to automatically trust something when it has bad track record of making shit up. What you do is hear what they have to say about an issue and take everything being said with a grain of salt and maintain cynicism about who writes it. (since it's all profit motivated)

I have only slightly been burnt by Rune Factory 5. The move to 3D, is not that great, compaired to the frame rate issues and viewpoint restrictions that came with it. Still enjoyable... But not great like it should have been. Then a little less recently Disgaea 6 on Switch was poorly optimized, but still had some fun to give. I'm still glad that I got the collectors edition for both games, but they feel like were not well made compaired to their previous entries. (But the sound tracks are awesome.)

@oliver_twistor

The same is true for non-mainstream, as well. There are a lot of strange things going on when you venture outside of mainstream. Many people unfairly bash mainstream media, in my opinion (I'm not saying that UEG's video does that, by the way), saying that mainstream media always have a vested interest to say the things that make the most money instead of serving the people. I feel the same can be said of much of the non-mainstream media as well, in my opinion to an even higher degree. At least with big corporations we know that they want to make money for the shareholders. What do we know of the motivations of people on RU-vid, blogs etc.? They can be as self-serving and disingenious as anyone else. The best advice is to never blindly trust anyone. Always think critically, do your own analysis and put your trust where it's warranted. Just the same as you should never trust the mainstream just because it's mainstream, you should never DIStrust the mainstream just because it's mainstream.
@hungrymusicwolf
@hungrymusicwolf 2 года назад
@@oliver_twistor I have to disagree. Most small groups are just individual people talking, so though they can be wrong and biased most of the time no other group is influencing them. The more influential they become the more likely it is that other organizations will try to influence them. Mainstream media, on the other hand, has so much influence that every big player in their country will attempt to get a stake in them. They are exclusively controlled by powerful organizations and the individuals are not speaking for themselves, and thus not speaking what they believe to be the truth unless it is not detrimental to said organizations. As you say you should never trust anyone based on just what they say, but individuals are always more trustworthy than big organizations unless said organizations are transparent and accountable to an EXTREME degree.

@@oliver_twistor I think its a difference between trust but verify to verify before trusting. By and large, I found the best way to see is if a game is good is either by playing it myself, or seeing when the reviewer goes back to the game after reviewing it (the guys I watch don't primarily review games but sometimes get early access/review copies). Just as an example, Legend of Total War has refused to continue playing TWW3 until it gets massive updates because of how bad the campaign is.

Yea, like Netflix Witcher or Squid Game. People refuse to understand 5/10 is "mediocre" and 6/10 is "fine". And when they try to convince me Squid Game is 10/10 masterpiece I just laugh at their face. Painfully predictable, annoying trope characters, complete lack of subtlety (not to confuse viewers I guess), flashbacks to stuff we saw 10 minutes ago, obvious plot holes after watching the show just once... If the characters would be good the show could be 5/10, but nah. Just another overhyped mainstream show.

I've found it interesting. When it comes to movies, critics are a lot more critical than the public is, the public just wants an entertaining story, critics over-analyze the artistic quality and meaning of the movie. When it comes to video games, the roles are completely flipped, the critics just want to be entertained in one quick playthrough, the public is a lot more critical and demands more replayability and content.

It is better to wait for release and check more source and check the comments for a real experience. There are reviews that the creator not even played the game. The older youtubers are sponsored by big firms and they won't give you a real stuff about the games. Look on AJ ,he was very good and realistic, now they did shitty reviews from smaller good games, like Guardians of Galaxy.... But Bf they spent a ton of Time, even the comments were bad but they were more interested in that bugged crap... Other problem is that software software products should have some common regulation to reach some result with the sold stuff. You buy a software and you use it and after some use you get into a bug it won't work, you can't get back your money.... When the product is failing and won't be fixed in a period of time then you should get back your money. Look on Fo76, that game has bugs from release....

i mean but some games ARE worthy of a 10, for various reasons. they are rare, SUPER rare, but they do exist. there are also games worthy of a 0, and there are WAY more of those. case in point for the later: bet on soldier. instead of waiting for reviews to come out years back....it sounded os awesome! and there was ONE copy left at my NEX(navy exchange), so i bought it full price on release day. 3 years AFTER the game came out, i for the upteenth time installed it, fully patched it and....still couldn't play it. i mean that final time i DID actually see the opening cutscene! i paid 60$ for a game that was LITERALLY unplayable. not even the FIRST mission. that is a fucking 0 out of 10 game. even with 3 YEARS of patches, it was STILL unplayable. 0 out of 10 game. but to the first point: when a game just BREAKS the fuck out of the mold, when it does just EVERYTHING better than anything that has ever come out before it, bar none, that is a 10/10 game. Half-Life was a 10/10 game. The lighting, music, sound design, story, voice overs, etc....all of it was the best of the best. many of the things were better than anything that had ever come out, and a number of them were at least tied for "best". One could also argue if a game exceeds in certain categories over anything else, that it is also worthy of that 10/10. even though it has some sections of criteria you might rate lower, the things it does right it does SO right, that it makes up for it. For me id say a game like Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice is that kind of game. its combat was meh, its puzzles were rather basic. both things i would not rate super highly. level design was decent but not amazing. BUT the sound design, voice acting and story were so far BEYOND anything ive ever played, in any genre, even NOW years later....that i would rate the game as 10/10. the best way i can put it is its like your LIVING through a great movie, or really great book. its not cutscene movies mind you, but YOU actually playing the game. the sound of her being utterly terrified as she slowly scoots along an edge, clearly TERRIFIED of falling to her death, her breath catching in her throat as she shakily shuffles through. The sound of the voices in your head trying to talk you out of going to your death in a vain hope of saving the man you love through resurrection, and on and on and on. its just bloody fucking brilliant. What it does right, it does so right, that the flaws just do not matter. it is one of 3 games in my life i would EVER rate sections of it in a break down as being OVER a 10/10. Why? Because it went so far beyond what i thought "perfect" was. it didnt just reach perfection, it somehow managed to exceed it, and became the standard in those categories to judge EVERY other game by that does anything even remotely similar. if it is a TRUE benchmark game, it is deserving of a 10/10 or very close to it. after all 10s DO exist, they should be rare, and be the epitome of either "this reaches perfection in everything" or "this exceeds perfection in several areas".

MainStream Reviews (such as Kotaku and Polygon and others) haven't been trustable in over a decade. Gamergate was all about the Reviews from these places not being trustable, Being buoght, being pre-written for them and everything else. That hasn't change. it didn't change all that time ago. And it was never about what certain personalities said it was. It was always about honesty in Reviews. It's so bad that these companies implimented an award for themselves and the very first one given out was given to a reviewer that said he didn't deserve it and all but admitted the mainstream review industry was basically bought and wasn't honest.

Additionally, this phenomenon of publishers controlling a game’s image prior to launch is directly perpetuating our current situation of “half-baked” game releases. This has been an issues in games for a very long time. In the past, they got away with it more, since on average most games were at least playable and issues would only creep up over time. Nowadays, games are too complicated and bugs are visible right away. Just don't buy any game at launch. It'll be cheaper, more stable and enjoyable down the road. If it isn't, just move on.

You make an important distinction here about the consumer/reviewer relationship. I seek out specific reviewers not because I want my bias validated, but because I either know whether or not their taste in games is aligned with mine or I can generally rely on them to report on their experience to some objective degree. E.G. Even if I don't always share your taste or playstyle, because of the familiarity and broad trust in your reporting, I know that I'm likely going to get a clear picture of whether or not a game is worth my time and money.

A big part of the problem is the desire to get a review out ASAP. I know why sites do it, cos there's so much competition that if they were to release a review a month after the game is out, it would likely get way fewer views, but often the reviews do not align with the state of the game at launch. When I played Forza Horizon 5 for the first time, for example, the open world felt like a ghost town. I hardly ever saw other real players and if I did, they would often disappear at random. Nobody was turning up to the arcade events that happen every 15 minutes. Convoys with friends would mess up all the time and you'd get disconnected from each other. The Eliminator was broken and players would often be invisible, or you'd be unable to challenge someone. And those are just some of the many issues, yet the scores were all like "9½/10, best racing game this year!". Also, a lot of big games evolve over time now, not just in terms of issues being fixed, but in terms of new content being added, and I don't think the current review process really works for that. Yes, some sites do re-reviews, but it's mostly about getting that initial review out ASAP for the clicks/views.

Who even reads reviews on sights anymore? Why not just say, fuck money, we are bringing in the real guys, and we are making sure that whether we get blacklisted or not, we do not fucking care. We are buying the games ourselves, and we are not reviewing it until after it's been out, patched if necessary, and has been after launch period by about 2 to 4 weeks. Let everyone else blow their reviews out early, get the heat and be eviscerated, while this other company comes around 2 weeks later, with multiple reviews linked which shows first, the launch period review, then the present, updated review. That way, it can show that A) they're holding onto their first one for a reason, and B) They value authenticity, by paying for the copies themselves, as opposed to doing early previews.

It became clear to me that mainstream reviewers were dishonest scum back when Civ 5 initially released and it got perfect or near-perfect scores. It was ultimately commercially successful (and changed massively from vanilla to final expansion patches), but on release multiplayer didn't work and multiple things in the game straight up lied to you. You can't have a game release with a non-functional game mode while advertising that game mode, give it a perfect score (or "only" 95+ out of 100), and be credible. I'd be surprised if that wasn't already going on long before that even. It's just when I noticed.

What is really weird (and I wouldn't be surprised if something is in the works for them to go independent since they've launched a Patreon and other things) is that a company I know is owned by the same people who own Eurogamer, has always been honest about their reviews, or simply not reviewed something if they would be forced to lie. Every single disaster of a game (especially these two examples) they have either gone against the grain (and usually contradicted Eurogamer as well) of "msm gaming news" or have said nothing because they feel like they might lose their jobs. I'm speculating on the job thing but people who aren't willing to cover something like Battlefield despite when it was first announced being hopeful and excited… it raises questions. They've also branched out of just game reviews in other mediums (DnD, restoration, collecting retro consoles, etc) and they're one of the main reasons I've considered (when my life slows down a little) getting Elden Ring. They're in a weird place of being not Indie reviewers (and their friends are now Indie game reviewers that are on their own and away from the msm crowd of news outlets) but also not really jivving with the mainstream gaming news. I'll stick with them because they were independent before being bought, and if they go independent again, I'll happily support them there as well.

@@Zynet_Eseled the company that currently owns EuroGamer (Gamer Network) also owns the channel (that was indie many years ago) and the fact that the one I mention is setting up/allowed to set up a Patreon is weird because the whole reason to "go legit" (be bought by Gamer News) was to insure that they had a reliable source of income/not have to rely on things the way someone like UEG does via YT ad revenue. And as much as I don't _want_ them to get kicked out, they wouldn't be the first group/channel that got (wrongfully) paired down by Gamer Network. Gamer Network did some really shady stuff with the board game channel launched by one of the long time presenters, and then ousted said presenter, and while it was all hush hush, taking timelines apart and UK law into account, they wanted the recognition and then paying the writers/producers/presenters less. Again, judging on UK law, and the fact that OxBox/OxTra knows that their fan base follows _them_ (a good chunk of the Patreon supporters also follow everyone's individual channels and socials, because it's not "oh we like the list videos" it's "we like the goofy fun stuff they do outside of List Features" where they talk about a neat game or do silly fun stuff-or play DnD) I don't think that in another few years they'll be apart of Gamer Network. In whatever form that is, because again, they could lose that brand recognition or be completely replaced by Gamer Network and I don't think the people who subscribe to Outside Xbox/Outside Xtra would actually stick around. It happened with Dice Breaker. Hell it happens every time a good host is lost from WhatCulture-whatever, people follow the writers/hosts, especially when original content is made and then the parent company pushes out the people who founded it/did the heavy lifting.

This doesn't just hurt the content creators but also makes the community be vary of influencers and their image as well. There was so much damage done to the creators and garnered so much hate and distrust just because game publishers pushed the responsibility on content creators. Cyberpunk 2077 will be remembered not for the insane hype that it had but rather how the narrative was feed out in the end to the point, all these content creators had to backtrack on their reviews and apologize to the community for the damage that was caused. Fun story: Around 10 years ago I worked for CD Projekt. The product they were shipping at the time was Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition for X-Box 360. When the Reviews came in (really positive ones, mind you, it's a good game), CD-Action - the biggest Polish gaming paper magazine gave it a "very good but not fantastic" score. I don't remember precisely what it was, either 8/10 or 8+/10. One scene that REALLY got drilled into my memory, was when one of the big-wigs came to our open space and started publicly yelling at the local (Polish) marketing team for that score. The rant was along the lines of "how come we get 9s and 10s all across the world, and yet we cannot get a good score on our home turf?" At least 10 years ago, the shot-callers at CDPR considered a "bad" score as marketing team fault, not devs and shortcomings of the final product. I'm fairly confident, that CDPR management still believes it to this day, and they are not alone with thinking that. With that mindset, of course they will do everything in their ability to manipulate the review process of publications that get counted on Metacritic. I ceased to have any trust in major review outlets ever since, I only follow personalities that I know well enough to gauge if they are speaking true to their feelings and how does their taste align with mine.

I've had issues with game reviews for 20 years and the only thing I've found to alleviate that is finding independent reviewers who javelin proven to have similar tastes. In this time my issues with game reviews is that there is not enough of reviewing what a game is, but rather subjective opinions. For example, say it's a RPG from a series I've never played, I'd want to know what the level system is like, what the combat is like, what the unique gimmics are, etc. I don't get enough/any information from reviews and usually just wait for a streamer to do a LP.

I think I speak for most in the community when I say every time your videos end, I wish you would just keep going. Have you ever thought about a longer format? It's just, unfortunately, we don't get to hear creators of your caliber regularly. I know you upload 5 days a week if possible. Which is extremely appreciated! Thank you! But having a longer video would be amazing g from you. If not I understand. The formula works and if it isn't broke then don't fix it, I get that. But I always seem to be wanting more!

In general, I only look at reviews from RU-vidrs I've been watching long enough to have an idea of their personality and preferences (Outside Xbox/Xtra, YongYea, and Charlie White are my main ones), and if the general consensus among them is good and I've been waiting a long time I may look at mainstream reviews just to build hype. I also tend to look at Digital Foundry to get an idea of performance, but not really for gameplay. Regardless of what reviews say, I usually know ahead of time what games I will or won't buy because there's a relatively small subset of games I like, and for better or worse I don't branch out much so I have a fairly high tolerance for bugs and glitches (so long as there's no crashes or anything completely game-breaking). I also buy most of my games on Steam, so if anything goes really wrong I can usually get a refund

Cyberpunk 2077 should have been one of the greatest gaming experiences, a culmination of decades game design. All ruined by greed.

Dude you've been hustling the last few weeks. Consistent uploads and quality content. Keep up the good work! I know just writing the script is a ton of work and all that effort comes through in these videos.
