The story is set in France, 17th century. This girl named Anne de Breuil comes from a background of abuse and violence, being born poor and desperate. At a point, she meets and falls in love with the young Comte de la Ferè, Athos. They two eventually get marry but she lies about her past for fear of being rejected. Athos's brother, Thomas becomes obsessed with her and once he finds out she had lied to his brother from the start he confronts her, attempting to rape her. She tries to defend herself and kills him. Once Athos finds out that his wife has killed his brother and lied about her past, he sentenced her to death. The day of the execution, however, he is not strong enough to watch her die and leave as Anne is chocking on a tree. The Executioner pities and saves her but the girl she once was is now gone. After a while, she becomes a killer for Cardinal Richelieu, the most powerful man in France. Anne is gone and Milady de Winter is born.
