Tuomas wrote this for his Father following his passing in 2021 - he said its a tribute to and a celebration of those who light the way for us, those who are our Lanternlight. I think this might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard, I'm a 58 year old Metalhead, but it brings a tear to my eye every time 🤘

This is an ode to the people we have loved and lost, how they still affect our lives, although they’re not here anymore. Sad, but hopeful song. And so beautiful!

My personal song of the year 2024. Top 3 in my NW rating. Whatever guard you have up, when Floor's voice comes in she cut's thru it like a fresh sharpened butcher knife and get's you right into your soul and while your bleeding out you feel satisfied. When Floor goes into her emotional mode you can sleep in the finnish winter outside in the woods and still be warmed by her voice and feel comfortable. Much Love from Germany to you and your passionate reactions!

Theme of this album is "Time". Absolutely a master piece once again from Tuomas.

Tuomas Holopainen wrote it as a reflection upon his father’s passing in 2021. He reflects on how we have been blessed to have had lantern lights who have guided our lives and how we in turn should serve the same role for others. It is about our love for each other. The Welsh and Northern English word "wynde" means a narrow lane or alley between homes. Basically we walk that narrow alley between our ancestors and our descendants lighting the way between generations until we become the ancestors when we walk into the yesterwynde. Gone is the hurt, the wait, gone is the warmth of day. A stray boat saved, happy memories engraved, on into a velvety night, beneath a lanternlight. Last night brought the heaviest of snows melting the songs of old, tying the boat, write a new one soon, sending me to the drowning moon, far above a lanternlight. I'm in the light and flood, I'm in the four winds, I am the waves shaping pebbles flawless gems, I am the snow on your palm. I am the secret stream, moss beneath your feet, I am you who climbed off of my back not long ago, a sheltered song in a world now gone, petrichor, the timeless. Turn loose the swaying boat, meltwater, sound of spring. I hear our song now, sung by the free, for a thousand more tomorrows of an incomplete weave. To the meadows I go, I’ll be waiting for you once upon a lanternlight. I walk now toward the trees, I am the secret stream, the night falling at my feet into the forest of Yesterwynde.

Lovely reaction. Always love your insights, especially Alanna's deep dive into the songs. Final song from the final album of the trilogy. It feels to me like someone saying goodbye to family and friends as their life comes to the end. Loads of beautiful imagery in the lyrics of seeing the end, of reminding those we love that we will always be present, of lamenting the unfinished things we leave behind (as is always the case), and then walking "to the trees". Since Tuomas is famous for writing lyrics for multiple interpretations I could also see this song where the narrator is death personified, much like the way the lyrics in Music were. A third way I see it is that the lyrics aren't necessarily about a person but are instead a metaphor for humanity and our walk through the eons of our existence which would fit well with the themes of the album trilogy. A number of references to Auri and other Nightwish songs. "I am in the light and flood" and " I am in the four winds" IMO are shout outs to the Auri songs Light and Flood and The Name of the Wind, very beautiful instrumental that have a similar feel. For me the line "I am you who climbed off your back" gives me Decades in the Sun vibes and of course "To the meadows I go" is tapping into the same symbolism and meaning as Meadows of Heaven. Heartachingly beautiful song and a perfect bookend to the album and trilogy. A beautiful tribute to Tuomas's father and all that are the lantern light for our journey through life. I agree with Tuomas, if we have lived a life of joy and meaning then we shouldn't be sad at the end but celebrate a life well lived. Floor has said that when Tuomas explained the meaning behind the song she started crying and I believe it took several takes to record the song since she kept getting emotional. If you look at around 4:20 you can see Floor tearing up in he video. I think this song and Epica's Tides of Time will be the songs for my funeral when I pass.

Tuomas started writing the album in January 2021. A few short weeks late, in early Feb, his father died. This song is a love song to all those we are connected with in the past - and in the future ("For a thousand more tomorrows Of an incomplete weave"). Every time I play this album (dozens so far if you include the orchestral and instrumental versions) I find another favourite. Or so I think, but in the end I'm always looking forward to Lanternlight. Those who have lost their nearest and dearest will understand that My father died not long after Tuomas'. If you look carefully you may see a tear in Floors eye. She couldn't do rehearsals of this without crying.

@@jimharris367 Thanks - it was COVID that got him. I spent many long nights listening on repeat to "Of Missing Persons" by Jackson Browne, that he wrote for Inara George when her father, the great Lowell George, died.

I really can't agree that Floor is in the background on the other songs, maybe not so far forward, but not in the background by any means. Great reaction though, as always 👍

Pure Floor. I love this song. Btw, this song was Floor's pick for a single, it made her cry when she first heard it (I had the same reaction to this song, it's so touching). The message is to enjoy life, as it's beautiful and should be celebrated instead of grieved when it ends.

I love Nightwish, because it has the musical genius. Tuomas Holopainen, who composes such soulful, emotionally appealing, beautiful music, without disparage from Floor Jansen, whose sound register is exceptionally wide and the use of sound is so rich❤🎉.

This song is an ode to the passing of time, from sorrow to nostalgia, from gratitude to jubilation. It is so well-crafted that it could have ended after Floor's singing, but Tuomas added a few extra, uplifting bars as a sweet dessert. I recognize Troy's influence in the writing of this song. The melody reminds me very much of folk music from Cumbria and Cumberland.

This is why the album is a whole piece of work. The first track opens with the projector and flute and this track mirrors the beginning to bring this masterpiece to a close. I can't say enough about how magnificent this song and this album is.

I did not tear up because it was sad .. simply the psych-physical reaction to such music. We do that you know .. eyes burn at a piece of music that affects us .. our primative reptile brain doesn't know what is happening .. danger? Run away? Freeze? .. think it just starts dumping chemicals into the bloodstream ...

I was at the pre-listening session of the album. The director of this video was there and he explained how this video is very different than the other two for a reason. And my opinion is that it works perfectly. Awesome job. Awesome song. Awesome Floor. Awesome reaction. BTW, you might be interested in this. Marko Hietala in 1987 with Tarot interviewed. The word yesterwynde is a real word in Welsh, not in English (ref to Troy). It describes a feeling that is not represented in any human language. So, a paradox. Another paradox is the original Antikythera Mechanism probably found in the Mediterranean Sea close to the Greek island Antikythera. It is a metal clockwork-like mechanism dated to be a lot older than any technical device of such delicate and detailed build. It lacks a known function. The song, I think, is a lyrical and compositional equivalent of the mechanism itself. Lacks function, but is impressive.

Funny how nodody "young" dont know what is the sound in the start and the end. And " wynde" is old english word look up.

Re: the mixing of Floor's vocals and you not being used to that. May have something to do with reacting to NW's live performances with Floor, more than the studio albums? What applies to the mix (as heard on YT..) on Yesterwynde also goes for the other two to some degree. Floor gets progressively buried in the mix over the three NW albums with her. "Part of the crew, part of the ship" so to speak. Or the NW "tapestry" in Troy's peculiar excuse for cutting a superb vocalist to size (while his parts sound oddly crisp & clear). So for album listeners, there has been ample time to get used tt trend. So I do like this one a lot, for the reason you guys mentioned: Floor in the role of front lady or lead singer and not "just another instrument" at Tuomas' disposal.
