"They" get worse every year because they fail to advance and continue to stay apart. One among "them" always has something to say to add salt to flames. It is not about happiness if the joke is how unhappy you are? The lesson is on fatalism. They would rather die than fit in. Fitting in means selling out. It also means someone will get into trouble. So yes, they do get worse over time.
