Say no to fast fashion once and for all. The fast fashion industry continues to be a top polluting industry (in water use, emissions and textile waste) that thrives off of marginalized POC garment workers (mostly women). The longer we as a collective shop under the mindset of constant consumption, we'll never be able to have an ethical or sustainable fashion industry.

Those in the room with the best style are the ones who are the most conscious about the impact their shopping habits and buying decisions have, on those who aren't in the room.
It's time to end fast fashion for real. That means questioning why you want to shop when you're in the mood. It means calling out your favourite influencers when they have brand deals (and do hauls or lookbooks) constantly with brands like Zara, Aritzia, Boohoo, really any brand thats pushing for constant consumption. We can't have racial equity or a sustainable (and ethical) fashion industry when a majority of consumers continue to shop all the time.
If you really care about sustainability, women's rights, racial justice, or environmental justice, you need to help but an end to fast fashion. It's all intersectional.

Quitting fast fashion is liberating! I can't watch a video with the word 'Haul' anymore. I think many are influenced by RU-vidrs and they don't realize they are only victims of trends. Who wants to look like everyone else anyways ? I don't understand that crazyness for designer bags, trendy clothes and in the end, all these RU-vidrs look the same. This is not having style, this is being a victim of trends. You only need money for that. You don't necessarily have good taste and know what suits you best. Money can't buy style.

it worries me that if brands lose money they will fire workers rather than moving to an ethical / sustainable model. and how do we know sustainable brands are treating workers fairly as well its so hard to know for sure. ugh. but i have decided to work on quitting fast fashion!

Totally fair thing to worry about - I loved @ajabarber's articulation of why the jobs argument is a myth: instagram.com/p/CBVPOCjpghd/ With COVID-19 and tons of brands like Zara not paying for factory orders (#PayUp campaign to learn more), garment workers already aren't being paid. These CEOs don't care about the jobs and that's apparent now more than ever :( And ya 100% there with ya re: actually knowing whether or not brands that claim sustainability actually treat their workers fairly. With all the tea being aired and brands being exposed, I've learned its always safer to support smaller, BIPOC owned sustainable brands (esp those with close relationships with the factories they partner with - usually evident in the content they have about the factories, certifications, etc) So happy to hear you're working towards it! Baby steps! It's about the mindset more than anything!! x

I totally understand but it's like saying " slavery is not ok but the owner gives the slaves a bowl of water and food everyday, better than nothing" well, it's not true. this people need a jab the dignifies them as human beings , they deserve better. we have to make this change for them

your channel is such a breath of fresh air. I am so tired of hauls being recommended for me to watch haha. but I’m a more serious note, as an intersectional feminist studying psychology & sociology, I get to study at university how marginalized groups get & stay sick because of things like fast fashion & it drives my desire to boycott every.single.day. do I sometimes wish I had better thrift stores locally or that some luxe sustainable pieces were so expensive? of course. BUT, I am not suffering because I don’t have another blouse. anyways, thank you so much for your passion on these issues that are all intersectional & so incredibly important. I love learning from you & always share your videos with my friends. stay well & sending love your way xx

Cynthia I think you really touched on a lot of important points, and I really appreciate this video. I'll admit I haven't quit all fast fashion entirely (I bought the odd pants or underwear at Target, or some summer tops from Madewell), but I have significantly cut back on all shopping. I'm at a point where I want to do a bit of a wardrobe refresh since I haven't bough much in the last year or so and I'm going through a style realignment. But I want to make my purchases as intentional as possible, either supporting brands I love that sell beautiful ethical garments, or buying secondhand from Thredup or similar shops. And I'm using the capsule wardrobe method to make sure I have great 'basics' that will help build up the foundation of my wardrobe.

i love thifting! I even started thrifting home decor/furniture pieces too! It helps reduce landfill too. What really bother me are influencers that sell clothes they buy from fast fashion AND then justifies another haul video the following week. :( keep up the great work and raising awareness on your platform to support conscious shopping. - xoxo subbie from Toronto, Ontario.

YESSSSSS! The mindset change is so key here. I challenged myself to begin a capsule wardrobe the beginning of this year/end of last year, and I got so many "let's see how long you'll last" and "that's not possible" comments. I committed, and I realized during my process of giving away my clothes to thrift stores and cleaning out my closet...that I was addicted to fast fashion and consumption. Fast forward to today, and I have maintained my capsule wardrobe lifestyle. I no longer buy buy buy. I make conscious fashion choices. And because I'm doing that, I am NOT tempted to buy anything from fast fashion stores. I have more money to invest in quality sustainable pieces. I have the ability to SAVE for my financial future. And I am investing more TIME and ENERGY into self-development. Our consumer habits are what drive us towards fast fashion in the first place. If we let go of that, we let go of an enormous part of the problem! And yes, I am so much happier

yes! i’m not 100% sustainable (yet) but i do my best. my method is if i have the money for a new item, i look at thrifting first, if i’m unable to find the item there i’ll go to my list of sustainable brands, and if i’m still unable to find the item, i ask myself if i truly *need* the item. if the answer is yes, i’ll look at other stores where i at least know the items are of high quality (so not zara, h&m, etc) and will last me a long time. right now i’m having to buy a bit more bc of weight changes and i’ve gotten older and my entire sense of style has changed as well, so this is the method i’ve been using as i slowly rebuild my wardrobe. i also am reselling my old clothes on poshmark.

I discovered you today which is just the perfect timing. Yesterday was my very first day that i tried thrift shopping. I was so determined to find at least one thing, too prove myself that I don't need to buy from fast fashion companies anymore. Well I didn't find anything even though I went to 4 different stores. But I'm currently changing my waredrobe, because most of the items I have are from my sister or bought by an adult who doesn't know my style(me neither). But I kind of know what I'm looking for, also I don't want to buy anything that doesn't absolutly excite me. But I'm not entirely sure about my new style but you helped me to stay motivated and to never buy from those companies again! I will continue to go to the thrift stores, some day I will find something amazing! Thank you for all your videos

These tips are great!! It's very difficult to resist fast fashion but thankfully I know how to sew. I can just go thrifting and tailor things to mimic the trends.

Your channel is incredible! I've been advocating for sustainable fashion for last couple years and I feel like resources for the most part are sort of piece-meal. Like read these books, go watch these videos, etc. It's so nice to see someone putting it all together with clear examples, counterpoints, and acknowledgement of problems on the tiers of society -> business -> consumer .

whenever I hear " thrift is a white/ rich privilege" I just know it's 99% an excuse. i'm an italian ( living in italy) and ,even if we don't have as many thrift stores, we can use app like depop/ vinted where people are dying to get rid of clothes that they bought without a reason, they literally sell them for 4 dollars, it's cheaper than fast fashion. i'm an xs and yes, smaller and bigger size don't have as much choice as medium size, but there is still an enormous quantity of clothes for me. it also seems totally normal to me, people act like fashion brands are leaving out smaller or bigger women intentionally, as if they don't like them 😂, but in reality is just that there are more small size people than xxl people, and those clother are more likely to sell. jesus, people have to stop being so self deprecating, especially americans...

Loved this video. It came right on time. I’m going to challenge myself to save money for fall. My body has changed in my 30s and things I use to like or wear just isn’t my cup of tea anymore and I’m tired of trying to make fetch happen😆. So I’ll save my coins and spend them on some quality fall and winter pieces and that will be the beginning of my journey. Thanks for the info and inspo. 💕

Grace from the We Are Tala sustainable activewear brand just announced a sample sale collab they're doing with depop and she brought up a lot of interesting information about how brands tend to trash or burn their samples to save "brand integrity". I'd love to hear your take on this and to explore the idea of a brand's sustainability title being influenced by how they dispose/clear out old samples/products PS I love your videos and get so excited to learn more through them! Thank you!

Ouu yes this isn't talked about that much but it's so important to highlight! I think it's amazing she's working with depop to sell sample items -- a lot of brands will sell samples at reduced price, with consumers knowing the fit may be off or there may be slight imperfections and I think that's totally ok! It's a great way for price-conscious consumers to gain access to a brand, cause the samples are usually 90-99% spot on! Will speak more to this in a future video! Appreciate your support x

Really it’s a broader issue that it is tied to capitalism and globalisation. TNCs search for low paid labour often in developing countries with less workers rights. This is causing environmental issues e.g pollution, water insecurity, climate change. Also significant human rights challenges too.

Yes 100% to all of this - there's a system and it's all interconnected (consumers buy what businesses make, government doesn't regulate etc)
