I totally agree. I've been a fan of this song (and many others from DS) but had never seen this live version. Terry Williams is just killing it! Always thought his drumming on the studio tracks was impeccable but to hear and see him go in hard is impressive.

I’ve played Honky Tonks with chicken wire in front of the stage. Honky Tonk can also be a genre of Blues/Country that is reminiscent of what are played in those bars.

Actually Mark does use a pick occasionally, such as on Our Shangri-La where he also uses a whammy bar. It doesn't matter what guitar he plays or how he plays it, it's always wonderful!

I remember a documentary about Mark Knopfler with a part about his guitar playing and he played a bit in it with a pick for moment; it was bloody fantastic. Then he said "Yeah, that's not really my thing" (not verbatim), and it was like What?! There are many a guitarist who would love to be able to play with a pick like that and he was "nah!, not good enough".

@@justgezbo I haven't seen that one, but I have seen him talk about a pick being a natural amplifier and how you can play faster with one. I can't imagine your average guitar player being able to play faster with a pick than Mark can with his fingers though!

@@jameskirschling7887, yeah you're mistaken. It's just straight finger picking, clawhammer style. I've seen Mark use a pick occasionally and play slide guitar, but I don't think I've ever seen him use finger picks.

@@jameskirschling7887 it would certainly be interesting to hear Mark play with finger picks. I wonder if he's ever tried them. Part of what I love about his playing is just how varied it is with a variety of guitars and different techniques. So many other guitarists tend to just stick with the same sound.

I know what you mean about reaction vids. Thinking on it, though, and watching them, I came to realize it's like that thing where the first thing you want to do when you find something really cool is show it to your friends. The innate desire and even need to teach others what we know seems to be a uniquely human drive, and it may be the very thing most responsible for our dominance on this planet. Also, now I'm totally addicted to reaction vids. I particularly like the ones where I get to see how people with backgrounds and life experiences very different to my own respond to stuff I really like. So far, it seems awesome things have a surprisingly-universal sorta appeal, which makes me realize that I should be a lot more open to stuff others think is cool, even if it's not necessarily something I'd seek out on my own.

@@michaelccozens something widely acclaimed is not necessarily mainstream. For instance Elvis was one of his kind and still not "mainstream" imho. So I agree that you should always look at stuff that are different to avoid bias of "mainstream" stuff, but not closing door to it as masterpieces become sometimes mainstream and trans-genetational

I think that the studio version is much more clean if you enjoy the guitar in particular, but the only thing that the studio version has going over the live performance is the guitar tone

Wow. I saw a lot of legends live (mostly thanks to my parents, who are heavily into music) - McCartney, Clapton, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Colosseum, Steve Hackett, Frampton, Lukather - Dire Straits is the one band I really, really would have wanted to see more than anything else.

@Dania Ann Alchemy is responsible for my lifelong love for playing the guitar. My parents played a lot of music at home and only in hindsight I can attribute some of the appreciation for some musicians to that. For example John Lee Hooker - my dad didn't listen to him but he listened to music like that and I somehow caught the blues bug and went on a journey of my own. I am sure CSNY did something for you even if it may not be obvious.

A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Yes, sometimes you get to know a good song, but somewhere out there it may exist a more interesting version of the same song. And most people who watch those reaction channels will want you to experience the best versions.

One of my favorite songs by one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Picking a favorite version comes down to taste, but for me this is not the version of SoS I'd choose to introduce someone to Mark Knopfler. With a few exceptions, I just don't think live performances work very well for reaction videos. It's not easy to play and sing at the same time, especially this song. There's a ton of energy and great individual performances in this concert clip, but it's also a bit sloppy. It fails to showcase the iconic groove, feel, and tight pocket of the original, which many consider to be the greatest strength of the song (along with Mark's singable leads). I'm sorry for bringing any negative energy, just wanted to encourage anyone hearing Sultans of Swing for the first time to check out the original studio version of the song if this live version doesn't do it for them.
