I had too much pitch in the E-propellor, so when I was doing static run-ups, it was stalling the prop's center section, allowing for more RPMs. took some pitch out and I'm getting the 6700 rpms

Hi Jonas. Been watching for a few years and have decided to give my "two cents worth", Strap in. Tail wheel aircraft have there directional tires forward of the center of mass. (lifting the tail of high wing aircraft move's the CofG closer to the tires reducing the swing ) Picture from overhead the Bike moving forward, It starts to turn left, this moves the CofG to the right loading the right tire and unloading the left .the CofG resisting the change in direction pushes to the right swinging the tail further into the turn , Ground loop. The tire with the greater load (grip) has more control than the lightly loaded tire. If the right tire is pointed to the left (toe in ) when it is loaded up this will INCREASE the speed of the swing. If the right tire is pointed to the right (toe out ) when it is loaded up this will DECREASE the speed of the swing. Toe out is a must for tail wheel aircraft. Easy test is lower the tire pressure way down ( Half flat ) and taxi at the speed you have trouble. The low pressure removes the tires ability to steer the aircraft into a swing. It will still ground loop but the speed of any reaction will be much slower. Nose wheel aircraft NEED toe in The fix is lots of toe out . My Zodiac 601 had 3 Deg of toe in , It now has 5 Deg out , PIG to placid. Lets not start on the camber change. If you want to take advice from someone you don't know, has no known experience on the subject , from a country that drives on the wrong side of the road, And you don't mind Facebook fact's (General internet bulls*^t) Start at 3 deg each side (6 total) toe out. Try low tire pressure first. Steve🙃
@JonasMarcinko
@JonasMarcinko 11 месяцев назад
You are 100% correct. Great explanation!! I should have set mine for toe out. But I went zero. :/thinking it would be good enough. I’ll try the lower tire pressure. Thanks for chiming in!!

Jonas, ref your carb and mixture probs. Two strokes are affected by the oil mix. Contrary to popular belief more oil is not good! More oil weakens the mixture because it doesn’t burn like gasoline. Learned this years ago when Yamaha racing two stroke motorcycles would seize at the drop of a hat because riders would “add a drop more oil to be on the safe side” Stu the PBO engine whisperer
@highmarkrich
@highmarkrich 11 месяцев назад
I may be wrong due to your engine being a 2 stroke, but i never worry about EGT. Only CHT. Unless you have a turbo you are worrying about melting, high EGT temps don't really mean anything. Mike Busch has some excellent videos on EGT's and why they're not a good or reliable measurement for engine operations. CHT's should be the primary focus in determining engine operations.
@jimchuk8511
@jimchuk8511 11 месяцев назад
EGT is the most critical temperature on a two stroke. It will cook in a heart beat if you run it to hot/lean. 4 stroke is totally different.
@highmarkrich
@highmarkrich 11 месяцев назад
@jimchuk8511 The more I've looked into it, I think I'll tend to disagree. CHT is what burns up engines. EGT is a monitor once you've got things dialed in. EGT is a measure of the efficiency of your burn. CHT tells you piston and cylinder health. The big caveat is on turbos where high turbo inlet temps will melt the turbo.
@jimchuk8511
@jimchuk8511 11 месяцев назад
I would respectfully ask, How many hours have you flown behind a two stroke engine. Two strokes use a good bit of fuel just to keep themselves cool. Otherwise they burn themselves up. There is a reason Rotax EGT red line for two stroke is 1200 and up around 1550 for a 4 stroke. Obviously you can't have excessive CHT in either type engine, but usually high CHT isn't that much of a problem on a two stroke. Most are fan cooled and that works pretty good. Jonas' is a free air and obviously wasn't set up quite right. I flew a 447 free air in my Himax for over 150 hrs with no issues. Quite a few other 2 strokes as well. Forget what you know about 4 strokes when you are talking about 2 strokes. @@highmarkrich
@highmarkrich
@highmarkrich 11 месяцев назад
@jimchuk8511 I've flown zero hours behind a 2-stroke but have probably 1000's on 2-stroke engines between dirt bikes and snowmobiles. Seems like same principles should apply. Again, I'll defer to engine experts like Mike Busch.
@oneninerniner3427
@oneninerniner3427 11 месяцев назад
Yeah but Mr Busch isn't dealing with two cycles. As a long time snowmobile racer dealing with many larger displacement 125-150 HP high power engines I can assure you EGTs are very important on a two cycle, they tell you mixture settings much quicker than cylinder head temps, ok.

@400brian
@400brian 11 месяцев назад
Here is something else to think about. Back in the 90s, we had a VERY active UL forum on Yahoo. I remember the graybeards in the hobby recommending keeping the RPMs lower than what you are running. Obviously it depends on the weight of the plane and pilot, and how draggy the plane is, but I remember it was said to be best to keep the rpms no higher than 63-6400 on take off, and to pull it back further as soon as safe to do so. If you could pull the rpms down to 6000 or a bit less in level flight, so much the better. The reason is that the big end of the rod is the failure point. The harder you run the engine, the sooner it will wear out. The worst case often described as an example was the guys flying powered parachutes. They would run the engines so hard they could wear them out in 200 hours or less. I would think this Airbike is fairly light, and probably is fairly high drag. Only you know how it feels flying it. I can't help but wonder if the prop is the best choice for the aircraft, a lot of the ULs ran a large diameter wood prop. Other Airbike owners would be the best to opine on that.
@johnlucas2037
@johnlucas2037 11 месяцев назад
I think 5800 is a good maximum rpm. That’s what I use on my 503.
@oneninerniner3427
@oneninerniner3427 11 месяцев назад
That is a snowmobile engine with needle bearings on both ends of the rods, not plain bearings. Also the crankshaft is supported with ball bearings. My extensive experience with those engines, cylinder and piston wear is more of a concern. If you use a high quality two cycle oil like any of Amsoil's two cycle (or two stroke if you must) oils along with good fuel and proper jetting it shouldn't be a problem.
@400brian
@400brian 11 месяцев назад
@@oneninerniner3427 Yes it is a snowmobile engine, but it is being used in a very different application. A propeller is more like running a pump, constant load, relatively constant rpm. In a high output, high rpm application, you can destroy the crankshaft while the pistons and bores look like new. Rotax recommends de-carboning the pistons on a regular basis because of carbon build up under the rings, snowmobiles do not seem to have this problem much if ever. At any rate, I don't think anyone would advocate running 6700 rpm in this application.

it was a wild ride is all I can say. The ppc had the slowest turning radius of any aircraft i know of. and just felt weird. it was dead calm on the ground but maybe we had some weird winds up top making it feel a bit unstable. I would go with ppg trike an a A wing rating. probably just as safe as a ppc. but you can actually turn.

Sense there is only one carbonator and the manifold splits to the two cylinders, they should both have the same fuel/air ratio regardless of the angle. However, on climb out, your angle of attack is increased and the airflow for cooling is not the same as it is in level flight, I believe this is causing your cylinder head temp difference on climb out.
