Why is people find a need to break stuff up. I could sit there all day and enjoy the quiet.

Considering it's a small town, and not a city, the damage was likely intentionally done so people couldn't use the place. There's no graffitti or anything, suggesting it wasn't done by delinquent kids or teens. That was done by adults, on purpose.

I grew up in north Louisiana as a kid and we used to make annual trips to east coast of Florida to visit grandparents. We always stopped at roadside picnic tables and rest areas as we stopped to eat lunches and dinners being car load of adults and kids in 1960s. Alabama was part of memories....cotton fields, people would put up roadside picnic benches near their single hog pen, etc. Different world back then...

Our Ag teacher took us there to help our forestry judging yeam learn about some different trees that we didn't have further south. He figured ,since the competition would be around Montgomery, we would have a better understanding of the local trees and a better chance of doing well. We did. The team placed fourth in the state , against some very stiff competition from the vo ag schools . Always liked this park and stopped many times on the way to Kowliga, on Lake Martin. I had met a girl during our trip that our ag teacher arranged. Went back several times to see and visit with the prerty little lady from the Lake Martin area. Thanks for taking us along , sorry for my ramblimg on but this park brought back a ton of wonderful memories. Thanks Dude!!

The Wetumpka crater is actually on the opposite side of the road, east of downtown
@downumop

The crater is very large (4.7 miles diameter) and across US-231 (to your left as you walked into the rest area.). Supposedly the rest area is going to be developed into a crater museum / interpretation center at some point.

Funding, funding and budget cuts. No other reason. EA we have places like that here in Tasmania the same thing. Too hard for councils or in your case county's to keep them in good safe condition. Shame looked a great place to explore. Cheers JV

The DOT shut down several rest areas approximately 20 years. This one was turned over to the City of Wetumpka. It is supposed to eventually be the Impact Crater Center but not sure if that’s still the case.

I just looked it up and the news said that they closed 2 rest areas on 231 because it was costing the state over $500,000 a year to maintain. Added to that was that the City of Wetumpka has grown so much that the rest areas were no longer needed.

That rest area was probably closed by water management or EPA. You saw a water body in the crater. They did a similar thing in N Fla. I75 crossed the Suwanee river. A rest area very close. This pristine waterway was receiving runoff from the rest stop. It was closed and moved away from the river.

That is Spanish moss hanging from the trees. It doesn't hurt the tree in any way. It uses the trees as anchors..

My family used to stop there a long time ago. I later lived in Montgomery for many years. I’m sorry to tell you but that is not the crater. The crater you are talking about is east and north of where you are by a few miles. They actually have a yearly guided tour where you can explore the rim of the crater which backs up to Bald Knob Hill. Call the Wetumpka City Hall and I’m sure they could give you more information.

A new crater exhibit has opened in downtown Wetumpka. The actual crater is located on Harrogate Springs Rd. This rest stop has been closed for many years. It belongs to the state. That area was outside the city limits until sometime in the last ten years when a strip of Hwy 231 South of town was annexed to include many businesses that had opened.

As a homeless person, if I came across this place, I'd immediately move in. Except that it's obviously still being mowed, so someone's taking care of it. All the trash laying around would be tossed in the trash bin and I'd fix up the building with the wood panel walls. Too bad, there's nothing like this anywhere near where I am. I'm trying to find it on Google Earth, can't see any sign of it anywhere near where it says the impact crater is. The ones I can find nearby, are all similar, but all are in use as of 2023 Google Earth imagery. What I find strange is that South Wetumpka is North of Wetumpka, lol. Yes, someone was there just a month ago making a video, and even before that. As of 2007, all of the rest stops along Highway 231 are to be permanently closed. I might be seeing this particular rest stop, but it doesn't look the same at all from the highway. Looks abandoned. It's on the 231, which is also labeled as the 9 and the 53. The water you saw, would be an old quarry, visible on Google Earth. The marker for the Wetupka crater, is up North, actually in Wetumpka. Street view confirmed, that is the rest stop you were at. For those who want to see, the coordinates are: 32°28'40.32"N, 86°11'54.09"W.

Ok next time look directly across the street ( North Bound 231 ). You can see very large boulders that are IMPACTITE that as ground froze they have rolled out of the hillside. There are approximate 4 foot deep tubes where the impactite boulders from astrobleme like cannon balls were driven into the bluff. The crater commision perhaps 20 years ago took over the abandoned rest area. It is an incredible scenic overlook. It awaits it's 3rd round of funding. Wetumpka is the mecca of old stuff. Keep heading South lol or hit me up and I will let you know the spots as they are special... As one who is blessed with abundant sarcasm I genuinely appreciate your world view.

The state gave that rest stop to the city and the city figured it was too costly to repair it, and the costs for the up-keep would be too costly. I always thought it could be converted to a tourist stop for the crater impact area and hiking trail. Maybe even a tent/RV campsite.
@stanleyhape8427
@stanleyhape8427 2 месяца назад
Could be several legit reasons. . Water/sewage is too old and costly to repair. Buildings need costly repair . Not used enough to maintain. Over used by squatters , junkies and bathroom hookups. Could be a lot of valid reasons.
