I have severe ADHD and 💯 agree with you! My environment makes such a difference in how I function. If it’s a cluttered mess then I will just clean nonstop. In order to stop doing that and actually do things that matter I had to become VERY minimalist. It has made a huge difference. Now I can read in peace and go for walks without the burden of thinking about what needs to be done at the house. I am able to focus and finish tasks. This is huge for those of us with this problem.

I think if you’ve got a donation bin going, and the item is useful and in good shape, donate it. Sometimes I may find a dollar tree item at a thrift store, but I’m happy to buy it there because the organization or charity benefits, and it’s one less that has to be produced.

We have these categories “put it away”, “needs a new home”, “donate”, “recycle”. And the things that DONT fit in those categories have to be walked to the trash can in the kitchen. If you fill it, you take it out. That way we’re more aware of the waste occurring. We recycle any basic recyclable materials as well as textiles and dirty shoes that get turned into a playground substrate. Being mindful of our waste helps us be mindful about our purchases so there’s less decluttering all around.

When I was in college I had a bin of my “memories” in my grandma’s basement and I’d look through it every time I was home for a holiday or weekend. It was treasure and meant so much to me (I thought), and I couldn’t imagine parting with any of it. Fast forward a few years and a couple of kids and we’re trying to pack up to move and I go through the bin for the first time in a while…so much of it was just garbage. 😂 I got rid of almost everything and it felt SO GOOD to not move that bin to the new house.

Sounds like a convenient excuse to throw things away rather than recycling/reusing/donating. I've shopped thrift stores for years, and there are always bins of small plastic containers offered for sale. I watched Dawn years ago and was put off by her wasteful decisions and lack of environmental responsibility...it seems nothing has changed :/
@stephaniesecrets6154
@stephaniesecrets6154 Год назад
I disagree - items have a cost beyond their cash value. All those cheap little things add up to a lot of resources consumed and a lot of waste. I'd rather buy a little container like the one thrown away in this video from a charity shop than buy new, even if there is little or no difference in price. Despite living in a much smaller home than many, I find space for my 'Out Bin' where I store things I want to get out of my home until I can donate them. I'll take my donation to somewhere I've seen similar items on their shelves, hopefully minimising the chance of it being thrown away after donation. I understand if someone is overwhelmed by clutter and needs to make the easiest decision for their mental or physical wellbeing, but that is not the case for most of us - most of us can make space for these small items until we have a bagful to donate or otherwise give away. We are responsible for the items in our possession and how we choose to dispose of them once their use to us is over. Things don't disappear once the rubbish is collected.

But this past year, I learned about a website TerraCycle which has all sorts of recycling programs (which makes me feel better since I don't have much recycling in my area). One of their programs is through Colgate, which recycles any brand toothpaste tube, toothbrushes, empty floss containers, etc. You package them up, download & print a label with free shipping & drop it off at a UPS shipper!

I always go through and do a whole house declutter about a week or 2 before Christmas. We've been living more minimally for about 7 or 8 years now and I declutter 2 or 3 times a year to keep it maintained but one of those times is always right before Christmas. I know with all the gifts from us to each other and from friends and family i have to move things out to make room for the new. My mom has already told me she is buying a season pass for our family. Idk what it's called but she got it for a zoo in Tennessee but it also gets you free or extremely discounted tickets to 35 or 36 other places in a bunch of different states. We obviously wont visit all the places but we can go to several for sure. So basically she's giving us a year of experiences ❤. I love it

I’m lucky that my neighborhood has a Salvation Army drop box right in our apartment complex. I can also leave bags of items next to the dumpster and they’re always picked up by a neighbor within an hour. Both help with declutter frequently. We actually found a great pair of steel toe work boots for my husband that way! They were left by the dumpster along with other good items someone didn’t want to take with them on a move. When deciding to donate something (for example the blue container you got from the dollar store), the reason to donate isn't always about donating something amazing, its also about keeping stuff out of landfill. @flynn1a
@flynn1a Год назад
This may not be true in your area, but where I live, Goodwill sends truckloads of stuff to the landfill - stuff that’s not actually sellable or so cheap that it’s not worth the effort to mess with it. So we need to be realistic about what we kick down the road for someone else to deal with.

@@elizabethsokol2545 I’m so curious how your town/city is able to make this work. I live in a city of 170,000 people. For a short time we had a swap shop for just sewing/art/crafting/school supplies and even on that limited of a scale, it could not be sustained. However, there is a VERY small shop at the landfill where you can recycle cans of paint. I think that works because a very small number of people do actually know or remember it’s there, but that small number who actually take advantage of the free paint keep that much out of the annual hazardous waste drop off.
@elizabethsokol2545
@elizabethsokol2545 Год назад
@@flynn1a The next town over started a "swap shop" at the dump by opening a shed, staffed with volunteers, that accepts used items "too good" to throw out. They have a variety of items ranging from kids toys, books and movies to household items. A volunteer stated in a 2021 article that the "swap shop" saves the town $200,000 in waste disposal. My town received a grant to build a shed for our "swap shop" at our recycling center and is staffed by volunteers. They have everything: cds, dvds, picture frames, christmas ornaments, cards, school supplies, craft supplies, toys, records, dishes, art and even furniture. If stuff doesn't move in about 2 weeks, they have to make room but good stuff goes quickly.. It is really useful for finding or donating items like the plastic case in the video, but the hours are limited to 2 hours per day, twice a week. We also have anothet shed for our "book exchange". For specific items, I try to find organizations that can use them. For example, I donated plastic flower pots to a park with a gardening program. Most recently, I had small box of items that I thought could be used for crafting and found a gift shop that works with autistic kids that said they can use it. I also found a church that told me that they don't throw out their rummage sale donations but save them for tbe next year. They have found what doesn't sell one year, will often sell the next. They also give away free stuff at the end of the sale. Hope this helps.

Love you, Dawn ! Yay ! I stopped watching this video ( came back now & finished) to tell you that you are a phenomenal Mom .. annnnd … I did a frog job that wasn’t so daunting after all : Cleared / cleaned / reorganized my fridge. Plus changed my sheets, took out recycle & trash, dishes , dusted, dealt with some boxes, & more ! Thx for the great inspiration as always! Congrats on being such a catalyst for Good for Dorothy's House, Dawn ! That is such great news ! Yikes I still have not yet bought my bundt cake book ( plus I plan to donate extra). Soon tho ! I have 2 major family Birthdays in December, as well as Christmas. But once I get more caught up, I’ll def make my contribution ! It’s in my nature to do that sort of thing & I’m looking forward to it. Happy December ! Liz in Buffalo

My youngest turned 8 yesterday and he decided he wanted to make the strawberry bundt cake recipe from your book. He helped me make it and it tasted so good!!! Cook it down for awile to boil off some of the water, and you have sloppy joes--different every time.

I’m down to the last few waves through the cabinets, drawers and closets- I’m left with the ‘sleeper keepers’ - the items I don’t use, but I love enough to struggle to let them go. 😂 I get encouraged every time I watch someone else do it. As a family, decluttering has been a work in progress. Our child, who is now grown, is very good at decluttering. I have always make him be a part of doing chores with the family and being responsible with taking care of his things, with assistance, with the exception of laundry. Picking up and Putting Away (PUPA) seems to be a key way of keeping a neat space. I struggle, too, but like I said, we are a work in progress, just like our walk in our faith!

It’s true that not everything is worth donating. One of our local charity shops has had to pay extra to have all their rubbish taken away because they had so much, and it was all stuff that had been donated but it was dirty/stained/bobbly/broken/worthless junk, and that seems so sad because less money will actually be going to the charity. 😔

When you said you dont understand why people cant break down the garbage in the bathroom to make it actually fit, it reminded me of something God revealed to me a while ago. The reason people dont do things the way I want them to or the way I would do things for others, is because they aren't me!!!! That thought never dawned on me before!!!! Others dont think or act like me because they aren't me. That can feel a bit frustrating! But I think we can deal with it like you've taught us....model it and live by example!! Not the answer we want to hear but I think after time they will come around!! I am loving Blinkist!!! I've never been a reader at all!! But I am enjoying the condensed version of books!!! I see so many people throw things into trash cans that I would be putting into recycling Another Question- is there a trash can in the kids rooms and the study area? When we updated our bathroom we added medicine cabinets that have mirrors and we put 2 large mirrored cabinets in. I love that all I do is open the mirrored medicine cabinet and I can see everything. Something like that in your bathroom could give each of the kids their own section

I always go thru the house and garage and pole barn to look for garbage before garbage day. I was blessed by a new friend of my husbands who helped him clean up is pole barn, an answer to prayer!!!...and his friend said he did not want my husband to retrieve any thing from the pile, there was a"big trailer full " of only "burnable stuff"!!!!!!!!!....and then there were several containers of other "trash"....well me, the wife sees a plastic shallow bin , I grabbed it!!!!....then I saw a rusty old tool box I had never seen before, low and behold there were some shiny brass screws!!!!..I hustled that box into the house and separated everything and did throw the majority of the contents. I am you could say OCCD?I have too touch alot of things as I am decluttering, It takes time , I do it fairly quickly. Guys , okay itz December 2nd. I live in a winter climate ( Bflo, NY) . I finnnnnnnalllllly took my standing oscillating fan down stairs to the basement TODAY ! Crazy, right ? I mean … I DO regularly keep up with my chores : dishes, garbage out, vacuum, dust, go thru mail , change my sheets, do laundry, wipe down counters, clean sinks etc. But WHY did I put this off ? Well… 4 one thing, I rent an apt & while my apt is nice, the basement is a disaster. I need to bring a flashlight there ( NO lights in basement !), the stairs R cluttered with the Super’s stuff, itz damp in basement , & I need my key to unlock my lil storage unit. So it IS a production. But still ! Finally ate that frog & I feel GOOD ! And my living room is great now ! The things we put off ! Only took a few minutes sheeesh !
