As much as people hate on the oden flashbacks, that was one of my favorite little “arcs” in the entire series, giving is a look into before the great pirate era

That's filler though it wasn't in the manga. Also he was trying to beat a world record but failed so another l for Garp 😅. If it was canon though my headcanon is that the world record is Katakuri's
My guess is that pirates enslaved him and took away his freedom and the marines saved him so then he associated marines with freedom and pirates with taking it away(one reason he was so fond Coby) but when he realized what the world was doing he stayed to protect who he could and have his own freedom at the same time. I think the reason that he is so hard on his family and those under his command is because although he values freedom and being independent he also understands that the choice comes with consequences. I might be wrong but I’m going to do a more detailed version of this on my tumblr account.
To me Garp was always meant to represent the good people in a bad system. Similiar to Smoker it introduces us to the idea that neither pirates or marines are purely good or evil. Obviously we follow Luffy, who is pretty much the nicest pirate around, but we are shown time and time again that in the pirate world being nice really is an exception. The marines on the other hand are portrayed as corrupt, but as I said Smoker and Garp show us that there are still good people in there. About Garp in particular: I think the reason is because while Garp seeks freedom, the freedom being a pirate offers is very selfish and often comes at the expense of innocents. Garp probably wants to not only be free himself but also wants freedom for others. Which is why he is in the marines, to reform them from the inside. But I think thats where the story is set up to go. In order to overthrow the oppressive world government the good people from each side will have to band together and team up to finally bring true freedom to the world.
There are many other Marines who are shown to be good people, like Tashigi & Bellamere (Bellamere's adoption of Nami & Nojiko is why Nami was okay with entrusting the Punk Hazard Kids to Tashigi, as its noted she feels comfortable around female Marines due to her upbringing)! Then you've got Coby and Helmeppo, both of whom are loyal to each other, yet still respect Luffy & Zoro who had a big impact on their lives! Sure Helmeppo was once a brat who mooched off his father's position, but after befriending Koby and realize how horrible his father was, he changed)! Kuzan and Saul are perfect examples of noble Marines, with Kuzan allowing Robin to live due to Saul risking his life for her (it's also implied he may have spared Saul by freezing him as Saul is still alive) and cause Kuzan isn't an extremist like Akainu! While Akainu hates parents and is willing to kill civilians and even Marines who stand in the way of Absolute Justice, he still allowed Kuzan to live showing that even his extremism has its limits at least when it comes to long time comrades (also Koby's speaking out during the war didn't negatively effect his standing in the Marines despite Akainu becoming Fleet Admiral)!
@@RaphBlade7 Oh, definitely! I just focused on Garp because, well, the short is about him, and he is also the highest ranking/strongest example of this. But yeah, there are bad and good people on each side. For every Luffy there is a Garp and for every Eustass Kid there is a Green Bull.
Yet he doesn’t as he’s just a man who pretends he dos Yet he’s still just fallowing orders. Now he might keep secrets, say no and not participate but he doesn’t push for it to stop or wider change in the organization he says he’s changing. Only exception based on the information we have of him is ace

@@kevind3974 I actually didn't prove your point at all. Garp does have Freedom, but Freedom doesn't Equal You Can Do Whatever You Want. There is this thing called Balance. Garp is Free because he show LITTLE RESPECT to his Superiors even to folks like The Celestia Dragons. And Fujitora is doing the same thing, so it is clear you don't undestand the Concepts of Freedom at all.
Ultimate plot twist Garp was the first pirate spy, he joined the Roger pirates and supplies information to the revolutionary army and select pirates like the red haired pirates
With the recent reveal that members of the D clan were purged in the past (clover's brother), it could be that garp joined up with the Marines because as you said "hell"
We also need to keep in mind that the average pirate is not the Luffy or Roger type that just wanna live as free as possible and sometimes helps liberate a nation and are willing to sacrifice their life for their crew. Most pirates are the type that plunder, pillage and probably do the r world that I’m not gonna use cause I don’t know if RU-vid will delete my comment. So it’s no matter what Garp went through it’s possible that he saw some atrocities committed by pirates or bandits (I know it’s the same but I’m using bandits here as a term for bandits specifically on land) and it helped shape his viewpoint on justice. It may also not have been this way but personally I feel like for someone who’s as against the world nobles and their authorities that he refuses any promotion that puts him directly under their command as well as disagreeing with some of the navies way of handling thing, something must have helped shape his perspective on life to make him wanna stay in the marines over leaving. But maybe I’m just over analyzing
i think he portrays the "good cop" archetype where he has to deal with the internal corruption of the govt in order to save lives i think blackbeard is supposed to be the most pirate-y important pirate we know,he is just like luffy but he doesn't care about other people other than his own dream
I mean he explains it 1000 times that he dislikes the world government but acting as their hand he gets the final say on how things are handled. if they send him to go do “justice” he will be able to do it his way instead of letting another corrupt individual be in his place.
He didn't necessarily have to go through hell, he could have had a "Shanks" like character who inspired him to become a marine, saw what they were on the inside and was like "Nah, I'll stay Vice Admiral and do what I want" We finally have it confirmed that Dragon was part of the Marines for a time so we saw the opposite reaction to Garp and Luffy just straight up pressed the skip ad button.
That's what i love about luffy, he's good because he's good, no backstory, no tragedy, he's a happy kid and genuinely empathetic and strong at the same time and hence an unbreakable protagonist, i think it's the same for garp, as far as his personal life is concerned
what if Garp's backstory isnt still told cause he had relations with imu as a child, and was forced into marine life style, forced to keep it a secret, and all this will only be told after luffy is the pirate king, and is battling Imu

I think garps freedom is about himself being free and that’s why the marines was the best choice as he didn’t have to answer to many rather than luffy wanting everyone to be free not just himself (probably wrong but fack it)
What if his brother/sister refused their granddad wishes for they become Marine and ends up being executed? After that Garp swore to his granddad to become a Marine so their family would not be executed again. That's why he mourned his failure over Ace's death. Just "what if".
It’s probably because SPOILERS back when like clover and garp were kids, the government was searching for and killing people with the will of D. And by joining the marines, he’s protecting himself and his family
Garp a man that whenever we get anything about his past it’s a 50/50 split between being absolutely epic and a deed worthy of his title or a shit stain so deep on his record you lose respect for the man But then again what do you expect from the man that is ment to represent the good in a corrupt and destructive system. As in the end he’s just a man fallowing orders. Now he might have freedom to how he gos about it but that freedom does not excuse his willful ignorance or the sin of “I was just fallowing orders”/“respecting command” intail Hes a man who could have done a whole lot more and truly fixed the system if he only didn’t play the game and risked his job. “But he didn’t become an admiral so as to not get dragged into the game” you might be saying. He wants to fix the system yet he chose to stay as a pawn thinking that the figurehead status he has would make up for his refusal to deal with the truth of his organization and those that back it. My little head theory is that like luffy he had a brother, might of been sengoku or something way more cool is he was originally going be a pirate, like look at child him. But then his kingdomg was destroyed by pirates including his brother then maybe a marine saved him or stopped the pirate and it was a good, non corrupt marine.
Well, pirates are murderers and marauders who steal and destroy anything in their paths, there are VERY few exceptions, and were probably no exceptions when Garp was growing up He probably went through multiple raids, or one destructive raid that left him with a burning hatred for pirates Through that hatred, he decided to join the Marines, and fight for the freedom of others from the tyranny of piracy But while in the Marines, he discovers that it’s run by Celestial Dragons who see everyone that isn’t them, as nothing more than pests who would do better as slaves. Seeing this would make Garp realize he’s working for people that are arguably worse than pirates, and live the rest of his career wanting something to change, and setting up the future Marines to do better than those that came before them
I got i huge plot hole about monkey d dragon he does not have the wind fruit bc he heald smoker sea stone sword and did not get weak which means he did not come to save luffy alone
Or he could've used Haki. Since that wasn't officially introduced until the Marineford Arc, although there has been evidence of people using it, like CP9, Rayleigh and the Amazons, and we've seen/read all of the practical applications of it. In Wano, Luffy was able to learn how to use a special form of Haki that could nullify the effect of sea prism stone.
@@scarlettbrooks1838only the tip of Smoker's weapon has the sea prism stone, which means that devil fruit users are fine unless they make contact with the tip.
He tried to, in a way. When Luffy came rushing to save Ace, Garp made a big show about being his enemy, but he ALLOWED Luffy to knock him out of the way and didn't try to interfere with Ace's escape. I can't say anything the guy did was great, but I can't help but feel sorry for him.
