The 13th Black Crusade began as the in-game background to the 2003 worldwide Warhammer 40,000 Eye of Terror Campaign. At the time, it resulted in a minor victory for the Forces of Chaos. Its temporary conclusion provided the Warmaster of Chaos Undivided, Abaddon the Despoiler of the Black Legion, and his Chaotic allies the territorial foothold they had long sought within the Cadian Gate, though the servants of the Dark Gods suffered grievous losses to their naval warfleet.

I remember posting my results for the 13th Black Crusade back in the day. I was an Emperor's Children player at the time and the state of the EC forums was a unanimous decision to do what we do best...ignore the actual battleplan and find a warzone to goon to death. I remember Inquisitor still being a thing at the time, especially important because of how closely tied it was to the then very new Eisenhorn books...and how the Cadian Pylons are basically all his fault. This was one of the last big hurrah's for converting miniatures as something GW actually promoted and encouraged. The great rift changed a great deal in the 40k setting but also marked a big change in the hobby and how GW approached 40k as a game...there's lots of change both good and bad from my grognards perspective.

As I recall the chaos players still managed to be way more organised than the imperial players letting us wipe the floor with them. It was hilarious seeing GW shit themselves in real time as they realised there 'less popular' factions were going to win. 😂
@luketfer
@luketfer 8 месяцев назад
@@Noisemarine Not only that but IIRC the Chaos leaders were actually talking with the people leading the Waaagh on the Ork forums and essentially the two forces were just battering down the Imperium since the Orks were ALSO surprisingly well organized (for Orks) and actually taking planets off of the Imperium whilst leaving a path clear for the Chaos forces to take the planets they needed.

18:48 Context for people not following Kirioth: When the infamous dice in the toilet story came out, Kirioth made the joke that everyone should be forced to lick their dice to prove they're not lead, then proceeded to spend I think an hour on-stream designing a T-shirt saying "I LICK MY DICE" which I believe you can still buy on his merch store.

Also, Robert Rath did reference at the beginning of "The Fall of Cadia" many the narrative events of the old campaign. 1) There is a second invasion after the Imperial Navy chases the Chaos fleet out of system, leaving the voidspace lightly defended.

They did a similar thing for Warhammer Fantasy, where games dictated the narrative. Except GW threw a hissy fit when Chaos wasn't winning (cause GW didn't update their rules for that edition) and then proceeded to fudge the numbers and make it look like Chaos was winning, even though they were getting bodied by everyone. It's where the "Grimgor Ironhide, the biggest Fantasy Ork, snuck up behind Archaon the Everchosen (fantasy Abaddon) and kicked him in the balls right before Archaon won" meme came from.

As someone who was around at the time, the problem in the games was similar to that of what GW did with End Times for Fantasy, forces of order were winning even the ground battles but GW wanted to make the narrative push that chaos won. So at the time they tossed out many games and ignored the results of the posted games to turn it into the "stalemate" which persisted. They did the same thing to an even worse degree when deciding the fate of Fantasy and Order absolutely wiped the floor with Chaos, but GW wanted the narrative to be for Chaos to destroy the world so they could make more appealing models, so they completely ignored the results instead of fudging the numbers. Kirioth mentioned it a bit that no matter what people were going to be upset especially if GW had a planned narrative push, and thats exactly what happened. This is why relying on the community for narrative changes is bad many times because GW writers absolutely love Chaos and have repeatedly stated that no matter the setting their victory is inevitable, which often conflicts with their own lore and events such as this.

Our local gw store had an apocalypse game towards the end of this event. There were about 16 people on a 14 foot table, throwing dice at each other. It was mental, and in the end the store counted destroyed models to decide which side won. All i remember is my 1000 points of tyranids (all i had at the time) were wiped out in two turns, except for the hive tyrant that was harassing people, and my younger brother who didnt bring an army got to control a warhound. I was so jealous.

Little 12 year old me took part in the campaign, and it took me a LONG time to get over the retcon. That was the thing that really cemented me in the hobby, the fact that me, as a kid, got to take part in forging the Canon of the game, on the whims of my dice rolls, was a big deal for me, I can live with it now, but there's still a part of me that wishes they had worked around the ending of 13th black crusade, maybe say have one of the big chaos lords arrive to break the deadlock on cadia, causing a second siege of the world, which can then kick-start the retcon events.

Ya know I didn't feel that old until y'all started counting out the years. But back then I played mostly Orks but I remember playing my CSM (All painted up as World Eaters) back then. We used to play at a 3rd party shop, it was a little hole in the wall that only had one table to play on. I've since moved twice and swapped armies a few times since then but for the last 9-10 years I've stuck with my Sisters of Battle and I don't if that matters/helps but I don't mind the changes all that much. I will say the bit with Celestine dueling Abby was great.

First off you Young Turk, I'm only 34 and I played in the Eye of Terror Campaigns. Second, I played multiple games for the campaign with friends, and 3 in stores with GW representatives. I loved the huge games that GW sent reps out to act as Game Masters. In the stores we each got I believe 500pts and split into 3 sides. Forces of Order defending a giant gate with a Forge World Baneblade (it was still at least 8 years before the plastic kit came out) in front, and a warhound titan behind the gate. Between the Baneblade and the gate was a moat with a bridge, on which stood Inquisitor Torquemada Coteaz and his henchmen. On the other end of the 12 foot table was Abaddon riding atop a kitbashed Chaos Capital Imperialis Tank surrounded by the forces of disorder. The third faction was the Tyranids (which was my army at the time) which appeared on round two from the moat. I remember my brother's Blood Thirster singlehandedly taking out the Baneblade. Then Coteaz bodied both the Blood Thirster and my Hive Tyrant. At the end of the day Chaos won each sponsored game after the Capital Imperialis took down the Titan. The other great thing about these games was that the GW reps were also sent out with bits that you could buy to kitbash. Thats how I got the wings for my Hive Tyrant and Tyranid Warriors. Overall, I'm fine with the lore change. I feel like GW didn't know what to do with the results of the first campaign. And by retconning we were able to see the story progress.

1:02:35 I think it's aged reasonably well. It's a different vibe compared to newer Daemon Engines, but I like its underlying design. I'd personally only make very minimal alterations to make it less front heavy, because its center of gravity looks way off with those massive claws. Honestly, removing the chest cannon and adding an artillery platform on the back instead would probably be enough, and if done right would make it slightly more scorpionlike aswell.

About the Eye of Terror Campaign: I was wrapping up high school, and didn't have any full armies or local GW stores to participate. But I remember following the battle reports on the games workshop forums, having copies of the codexes and buying white dwarf magazines to try and follow along. I don't know if Kirioth can confirm this, but I THOUGHT the overall premise was if Cadia fell, the way to Terra was open, aka, Chaos would be considered the strongest in the galaxy. There was a huge push to see it happen, and I remember a lot of comments online about how GW 'froze' the setting rather than try and deal with that as a possibility. There was this idea that the people who owned GW sort of froze the storyline because they didn't know what to do with it next. I don't know if you would call it a conspiracy theory, but my overall take was that many players felt a bit frustrated after the campaign was over because of the freeze and sort of 'oh chaos won... I guess Eldrad dies?' sort of vibe. For my part, I didn't really start paying attention to GW stuff again until the Gathering Storm happened. I started seeing buzz about the game and the tabletop BECAUSE of the Gathering Storm and the Breaking of Cadia... aka, unfreezing the timeline. I know among the local 40k gamers I've talked to since that campaign, they were all just happy to see the storyline moving again more than anything else.

I wonder if they could do that kind of narrative again. Like have players just record the last phase or something. Something quick and verifiable, it’d cut down submissions making it easier to skim through but would also make botting much harder. Either that or if they ever made an official digital alternative for the TTG they’d have the perfect controlled environment for this kind of event 👀👀👀

14:25 I hate to UM ACTUALLY without finishing the episode, but "Lost and the Damned" isn't the _Legion of the Damned_ that Bricky implies (Ghost Riders), it's what Traitor Guard was called back in those days. They had their own rules in the Eye of Terror Codex iirc, but they were unsupported since then. Today, they have models (Kill Team: Blooded) and rules (Codex Chaos Space Marines), and some people convert whole Imperial Guard armies to *look* like a Lost and the Damned army (using loyalist Guard rules and chaos proxy models). Technically illegal, but whoever doesn't let you do that today isn't worth playing against.

I submitted about 10 games during this campaign, it was good times definitely played more because of it. I was wigged out when they retconned it when they could have just said the new storyline was the 14th crusade... but i guess they wanted the number 13. I remember being weirdly conflicted when Eldrad died. I love the grimdark so much, so death should be a part of the setting, but Eldrad was my boy.

I also remember that was just after when Tau came out and all the Anime fanboys busted out. If I remember correctly, Tau wasn't technically part of the forces of order. They were their own faction and there was an obscene amount of Tau victories at the beginning of the campaign and a lot of us were like WTF??? My Eldar Alaitoc Ranger Force had some great games but my nids were pretty lame. I ended up playing my Eldar army more. Too bad there isn't any Alaitoc ranger force anymore. But since the models haven't changed much, I might be able to salvage some of that army lol.

This is actually very similar to the Storms of Chaos event in Fantasy that happened around the same time as this event. It was the End Times before the End Times where the fate of fantasy was decided by player matches. The Storms of Chaos has kinda gotten a "Star Wars prequel" treatment after the End Times happened. It was originally hated due to being a giant clusterfuck, but compared what came later people have looked back at it with a lot more respect and some of the memes that came out of it was great. Out of the player matches the Orks curb stomped everything so the event ended with Archaeon (Abbadon of fantasy) was about to kill Valten (the Guiliman of fantasy) but then just when Chaos was about to win Grimgore (Ghazgul of fantasy) came in with a steel chair, kicked Archaeon in the nuts and then piledrived him into the ground. Then walked away while declaring himself "the best". An amazingly orky ending to the event ( which honestly we need more of in Warhammer) and more importantly it averted "The End Times", so many look at that event as the unofficial alternate timeline where fantasy was saved.

Love your podcasts But i think u still didn't catch the sound error in the end of the video, it there for some episodes already. But I don't dismiss the thought that might be intentional

Doing soom quick math here for the youth soldiers... 200 points for 50 means each soldier is only worth 4 points.... The missile launcher is 20 points. So saving a missile launcher is worth 5 dead kids. This is so perfectly on brand, and I love it.

British measurements are great. We have highly regimented chaos. Milk and beer? Pints. Petrol and fizzy drinks? Litres. Height of buildings? Metres. Height of people? Feet and inches. Distances between places? Miles. Distances between close things? Centimetres *or* inches. Baking recipes? Grams. Weight of meat? Pounds and ounces. We saw all measurement types and said 'yes.' Basically we switched to metric a while back, but grandfathered the old measurements through so both are used. Back when I worked on the deli our scales only worked in grams, and anyone over 50 would order weights in pounds, so on one we had a quick conversion table sellotaped to each scale for us younglings.

I think global campaigns are still possible, and I would love to see them, but they need some key structural changes 1) for the sake of preventing bots and general false reporting, they need to be reported by store reps in warhammer shops (and perhaps recognised 3rd party venues, as the main stores are quite sparse). That way they could ensure some measure of legitimacy in the data 2) they should tone down the scale and galactic impact. Instead of something like Cadia, it could be a smaller campaign for some fringe cluster (be it established or purpose-built for the event). That way they can write in accordance with their data to make the event actually matter, but it won't be significant enough for it to drastically change the status quo

Hey look, it's the version of the 40k universe that I use for my RPGs! It's hilarious how many players I've had that, upon me telling them Cadia never fell, go "YES!"

To add on to what Kirioth said about dead characters, at the time of 3rd/4th it was the norm for books to have canonically dead characters *looking at you Blood Angels*, with the understanding that not every game took place in current era. At the time GW was in the same camp as most other minis game brands in saying "here's the toys, play with them how you like."

Can confirm to brickys point about height measurements in the UK the general populace uses ft and inches. Then you fill out any military adjacent form and they want your height in cm and weight in kilos, and everything goes wrong 😂😂

I just really wish they built off of it rather than retcon it. by doing this they would have honored that massive event, mainly by keeping some of the minor details like the fate of the other planets. So if a planet was exterminated in that campaign say that it was in the new version as well.
