So kids, what have we learned from today's history lesson? Well, Britain's relationship with its colonies and dominions had all the signs of an abusive relationship if it were between humans. Here's our friend Riz Ahmed beautifully developing this theme. • Riz Ahmed - The Breaku...

@@WhiteCamry He does. Which is a truly impressive feat. I think it's that the actor playing King George III gets to go full villain reveling in his villainy for the song. I mean, we can take a historical perspective and say George had mental problems, and also, having never been to the colonies, had no clue or understanding about the practical conditions the triangle trade and the taxes were creating, and that lack of understanding is why he acted as he did. But in the end, this is probably one of the most accurate bits in Hamilton.
@professorbutters
@professorbutters 11 месяцев назад
@@jenniferhanses7064Well, and also Parliament was responsible for most of the really crappy stuff. New York actually put up a gilded statue of him, which shortly thereafter was melted down for bullets. Also, he was pudgy, interested in farming, and never dressed like that except for his coronation portrait, but other than THAT, totally accurate. It doesn’t matter, because George III, the tyrannical mad king who wears silk and eats babies for breakfast is a powerful part of American mythology. It’s a way a young country defined itself: what we are is not like that. Also, it’s really funny, but accurate, no.

This King George 🤴 has a better grasp of the character and that the song was intended to be a break up letter to America than some of the other actors, but it doesn't have the charm and dramatically kinky subtext of obsession like Groff's version. Nor does it have the sass and playfulness. Groff's portrayl is just so amazingly perfect. Like clearly Groff really understands the meaning of the song and connects with the character on a whole other level to all the other actors. You feel that obsessive, crazy love when Groff sings it. Groff also just has such amazing vocal technique that he manages to make seamless and look natural but is actually very highly technical and tricky. It is a wonderful song that has so much history, culture and meaning in it with such a boppy catchy tune. While other actors do great performances of it, Groff just absolutely nailed it to perfection. It is my absolute favourite of all the songs in Hamilton.

In your description you mentioned the relationship between Britain and it's dominions and colonies. However although it was the British forces, it was the English that did it all. People seem to forget that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are currently English colonies.

Very true. But the colonised can also colonise.

Scotland has its own government. Wales has its own government. Northern Ireland has its own government. There is no government for English people we have the British government ruling us we are not represented as a people.

@@Borrox2U The British Government is over represented by English MPs. It is practically an English government with a few visiting mps

Good performance, but without the intensity of Jonathon Groff. Kind of lackluster, imho

There such a massive difference between this and Jonathon Groff's version. This guy rushes the lyrics and Goff works them and uses them for dramatic effect.

He’s not singing it in a musical style play. He’s singing it as a song in front of an audience. There is a difference between singing a song theatrically and the more conventional way.

He didn’t put the mad as a hatter edge to it which made it so fantastic. Disappointed. Jonathan Groff got it right. This guy could pull it off vocally he is good but just misses what makes this song work. Too bad

He was known for that since he was the mad king. He had some kind of mental issue. It wasn’t just for kicks and giggles.

@@daphneydonegan5680 It's thought that he may have suffered from bi polar disorder. That doesn't mean he was a drooling idiot. Even after America's independence he inspired his people's efforts to oppose Napoleon and wrote that he would be at the head of his nation's armies in the event of any invasion.
