This is a cutter-rigged version of the Benford ‘Badger’ design made famous by Pete & Annie Hill. They voyaged extensively on Badger, including numerous Trans-Atlantic crossings, as reported in their books: Voyaging On A Small Income and Brazil and Beyond. The original Benford design called for the cutter rig employed here. The Hills had the designer produce a junk rig schooner sail plan. The listed vessel was built with the reinforcements to allow for a future junk rig conversion. Both the Hills and Jay Benford have inspected the listed yacht in early construction.

I have always liked this design. I personally would have went with the junk rig option, but either way, an amazing boat you can build yourself. Outstanding build. The craftsmanship is outstanding.

As soon as I saw it. I knew it was a Jay Benford design boat. Because of S/V Tapatya and the videos Tony has made documenting the build. One of the big differences is the sail plan. As his is a Junk rig. That and the interior layout is different. Utilizing an inboard Volvo Penta diesel saildrive for propulsion.

Annie and Pete Hill, preferred a junk rig. The feature that really drooled over, was the galley. Both the sink and cook/range were mounted along the center line, leaving about 8’ of countertop for cooking on. Sink close to the companionway, where a drip or two of water wouldn’t make much difference. Stove on centreline is more stable than one mounted under the deck close to the outboard side of the cabin

A nice boat and an excellent example of pride in craftsmanship, a rare bird these days. I'm touched by your understanding of the countless hours of hands-on labor of love that went into the construction of this unique little vessel. You've put in the hours yourself on two boats as is; you know what it takes; I watched all of your videos. Y'all have two kids now; it's been a while, and as usual, a great review.

Do you know if the outboard was powerful enough ...could you fit a 6hp gasoline?? Does it ever get submerged while underway? I like it very much. Cheers and thanks for the video

This boat is awesome! This is the same design they Annie Hill sailed when she wrote voyaging on a small income! This is a tried and true cruising design. I have so many questions for you Dave

You seem to fall in love a lot. Does Randi know about this? 20 years ago I would have loved this boat. Now it's just very interesting. I agree I love these offbeat sort of boats. Keep up the good work finding these.

It is a weird boat compared to 99% of the boats out there. That hull shape is going to make it a not very forgiving ride. Your viewers appreciate your selections, certainly better than a Catalina or Beneteau tour…keep it weird!

Nothing weird rather personal. You'll find many "weird" boats before Beneteau and these type of boats took over to sit still in marinas designed for them. As I started sailing in 1960, age 12, I remember that my dream boats changed every month with so many personal design that could be seen in harbors and yards. Standardisation took over, that was for the worst as each boat had a different approach in terms of gear and solution to various problems which you could use for your own boat. Afew reads of the books published from the 30s to the 70s could give you a glimpse of these solutions some which could be useful now.

My concern would be what speed could she cruise on electric and for how long? What would be the recovery time on the batteries from solar?

Cruise speed is about 4.5 knots. It does have a wind generator, so the recovery time would be OK as long as the wind is blowing. But if the wind is blowing, you wouldn't really need the motor. I like the idea of being able to be out indefinitely, but like you, I would hate to have to wait for days for the batteries to charge.

It's probably not so much that he "likes" those kind of titles, but that the RU-vid algorithm puts a positive value on them in terms of recommending them to viewers. I mentioned, a while back, to someone whose work I respect, that I found a video title that was in all caps to be shouty and offputting. "The Algorithm demands it." was the answer. Sigh. Since we're not paying, directly, for these videos, it may not be fair to complain about the visible signs of the gyrations that the producers have to go through to get paid... 🤷‍♂

@@christophernoto The nice thing is there is no shortage of content that doesn't rely on gimmicks to attract and keep viewers/subscribers. No, we are not paying, we are the product being sold for money. Views, likes and comments are the currency that is paid. The super successful channels that I have viewed for over a decade and more never relied on gimmicks. If the content is good and interesting there is no need for clickbait, if the content isn't that good, then no amount of clickbait manipulation will help in the long run and may prove to be a detriment. I don't believe the content here needs title manipulation, it is good and has always been good. Te reality is the types of videos you typically watch have more to do with channel/video recommendations than anything else. If you watch a lot of sailing channels you will get sailing channel suggestions, not "weird" video suggestions.

What a piece of junk! Old technology that will be a burden to maintain.The placement of the solar panel under the boom will limit the effectiveness and the power generated. The design will be awful when you are at anchor and need to re-provision the boat. Electric motor with the limited inputs for generating power is a joke. Ducking through the midget portal to get to the forward birth is some kind of joke right? With solid hatches and tiny portholes you will have no light so its more like a coffin with a mast. This is the boat you buy when you want to be the person everyone makes fun of at the marina and have money to throw away.

All boats are a burden to maintain. It did the Hills very well and is apparently seaworthy and safe. Get a modern fibreglass caravan by all means - it'll certainly be more expensive to buy. Needs a bigger, gas-powered outboard in that well (or a small inboard with sail-drive).

That's the point...."Voyaging On A Small Income" !!! Ain't nothing you can't fix while off grid. Actually....Its the boat that gets a crowd of appreciative sailors around in port. The design is tried & true from the artic to the south pacific & thru the roaring 40's.....just saying.🤕
