Just a few days before this performance, she was hospitalized for dehydration she was not feeling good at all, but still did this performance. She truly is a trooper.

Yeah, she was working SO hard rehearsing for the tour. She was pushing herself too much like she did for the short film, which she did not sleep for 15 hours during one day of shooting. Janet was a beast and always overworked, which is why it pisses me off when people call her lazy at any given moment. She has given us 5 decades of HARD WORK. Unless you’ve been working since you were 7 years old in a family of perfectionists, you have no idea what it’s like to be in her shoes. So whenever she takes a break, I’m happy for her. She deserves it.

@@UltimateBrody exactly Miss Jackson doesn’t owe us anything she has given 50+ years of entertaining us these new artist could never do what Miss Jackson has done her entire career. she has always been a workaholic. People are never happy, no matter what she does.

This was January 22, 1990. I was 6 and it was the first time I ever laid eyes on Janet Jackson. It has stayed with me my entire life. The whole performance/aesthetic is still just perfection.

I clearly remember watching that performance live in real time. If you have never seen her 1998 Velvet Rope tour you should. “If” and Rhythm Nation” are stand outs, but the whole show is amazing.

"We'll have a good time. Leave your worries behind. Boy you can be mine. An Escapade." This performance and the music video were choreographed by Janet and Anthony Thomas.

Great performance of hers and goes to show how precise she is with her movements. Although she was without a mic, she was very capable of performing/dancing and singing at the same time. If i'm not mistaken it wasn't a big deal to lip sync back then until the Mili Vanili scandal. The Rhythm nation Japan tour is not a doubt performed with live vocals and a lot of dancing and worth checking out 👌

By this time, Paula Abdul was not choreographing anymore. She was doing her own music, and actually performed that same night before Janet (I believe as an opener for the show). There’s a video on RU-vid showing a mash up with her performance, and then Janets performance to see who they thought was better.

They were both great, and I’m team Janet, but Paula won that night. She put on a master class in choreography and showmanship.
@dancingwheels8494
@dancingwheels8494 7 месяцев назад
@@adua78 Based on the choreography and staging, Paula, hands-down won. That’s just where Paula shines in general. I think Janet may have underestimated the level of production Paula was going to do. Even though I’m Team Janet, I can watch Paula’s performance several times, whereas I felt like I was just watching the Escapade video. But it was clear from the audiences reaction that Janet brought more innate star quality and connected more with the newer street style Janet was bringing. All in all, they both had great performances. I wouldn’t even be comparing them if I hadn’t watched that mashup video.

@@dancingwheels8494 also, I wonder if Janet was mid-Rhythm National tour here. If so, that’d explain the minimalist stage/production. Paula didn’t tour with Forever Your Girl, if I remember correctly.

Janet may have underestimated what? What makes you think Janet sat up all night thinking of how to top Paula and vice versa? Janet was in the middle of rehearsing for Rhythm Nation Tour and was hospitalized three days before her performance at the AMAs. It’s super weird that you can read Janet’s mind. Did it ever occur to you that she showed up to perform, win two awards and leave to finish rehearsing for a tour that was one month away? The way people pit female artists against each other when Janet and Paula probably didn’t even have that mindset - especially that night - is projection.
@dancingwheels8494

@@UltimateBrody first of all chill out and sit down because you CLEARLY didn’t read my comment fully. I’m not projecting or reading ANYONE’S mind. 1. Janet has said many many times that she is very competitive (even with Michael). So it is not a far-fetched idea to think that Janet may have wanted to put on a better performance than the woman who used to choreograph for her. Janet has always believed in friendly competition, especially because it can breed higher art. It’s only now with a supreme legacy, age, wisdom, and nothing to prove in her career that she has said publicly she doesn’t compete with artists anymore. 2. I never said I knew what Janet was thinking. Even you quoted me saying that she MAY HAVE underestimated, as in it was possible. 3. You said I was trying to pit two artists against each other, which is absurd. If you read what I said, fully, you would’ve seen that I only made a comparison because of the mashup video that I watched, and that BOTH ladies had GREAT performances. It is very possible to make a comparison without putting someone down. It seems to me that you were projecting and injecting negativity into my words. And for your information, I am a JANET SUPER FAN. If you don’t believe me, you can check out the video on my channel where I talk about the night Janet invited me PERSONALLY to have a VIP experience at her tour.

Can you please react to Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's duet video Scream. It's the most expensive music video ever created and it was a gigantic hit.
@adua78
@adua78 7 месяцев назад
All dance pop acts used to lip the AMA’s unfortunately. Still sharp choreo though. This same year Paula Abdul opened the show, and it’s regarded as one on the best AMA performances ever, though still lipped.

I was worried when I came to your channel because I know you love Madonna and I despise her. I'm almost 50 and I have never liked Madonna. I applaud her ability to market herself but I think Janet is a better dancer a natural organic dancer, I like her voice better and I like her songs better. I hope we see more Janet content on your channel. She's had some really great performances live as well here she's lip syncing but she does sing live. She did a tribute to her brother I'm going to have to try to find the link for you you have to review the Scream video,the duet with her brother I don't think you have yet?

Janet performed a mix of What Have You Done For Me Lately and Nasty at the Grammys in 1987 and it was AWESOME imo. Its the performance that made me a fan. It felt like the moment that Janet declared herself an independent star. Not just a Jackson but JANET.
