I've been shooting photography most of my adult life. It started with an on sale Nikon D3200 that wasn't even interested in using, all the way through being a photography business owner, teacher, and RU-vid Photography Content Creator.
My favorite subjects are Human Portraits and Shallow Depth of Field with my specialty, or claim to fame if you will, being Dramatic Nude and Bodyscape. Over my many years of photography I've mastered many genres but I never stop learning and I don't want you to stop either. That's why I started my RU-vid Channel in the year 2020. After a hiatus from photography, I picked up my camera again just in time for the Covid Pandemic. The world shut down. With more time than ever and no humans to photograph I found myself bored but motivated. ZWade Photo, the RU-vid Channel, was born.
I have always been a Nikon brand photographer, but in my community on RU-vid there is limitless room for Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon, AND any other brand, photographers. Follow along as this channel one day grows into the biggest, most honest, and most fun photography community on the internet.
I'm ZWade the ZWade in ZWade Photo, Stay Sharp RU-vid.

You nailed it at the end. When the D850 came out, it was by far the best dslr camera ever made. When the Z7 and Z7ii came out, it was already behind the competition in many categories. Fun episode 👍👍

Excellent presentation, and you are 1000% correct. Having said that as an owner of two D850 and as a non-professional, it will be a long time before I let go of my D850s. I know nikon makes several cameras that out perform the 850. What I have with my cameras is a relationship a feeling and a knowledge that my own skills have not yet surpassed the D850s technical limitations. The D850 was and still is technical masterstroke and an amazing value on the used market. A particularly good choice for someone entering the photography world a very expensive place to be playing in.

A quality DSLR has a Pavlovian reaction for me. Shutter and Mirror flap along with the bigger grip just creates a more visceral experience so I love it still. If I'm being honest, my results from the Z7 II are superior. Yes. I don't think the Z7 was intended as a replacement other than sensor specs/MP. I'm thrilled with the Z9 and have no use for a Z8...but I'm sure my GAS will take over and I'll preorder it day one when/if it is announced.
@ZWadePhoto
@ZWadePhoto Год назад
I’m still mulling over the Z8. I don’t need another 45 mp. But if it’s video is the same as the Z9, I could use it for RU-vid FOR SURE. For video and lens comparison since it shares the Z9 sensor. I used to need a lower MP camera for low light, but I’ve yet to see any noise after export with any recent camera lol so 🤷‍♂️ once I see a real Z8, not a mock-up, we just have to see.

What you not mentioning at all is the D850 is a pro body and Z7II is not a pro body, D850 has pro-style controls which have been on every pro body since Nikon F5 and F100, D2H/D2Hs/D2X and D200, D3/D3s/D3X and D700, D300, D300s, D4/D4s/D800E/D800E, D810, D5/D500/D850, D6, Z9 all the ones I mentioned above had the pro-style build and controls, they are built like a tank, great weather sealing, also D850 is way more responsive, has lighted buttons, and the list goes on which makes it way better than Z7/Z7II. The controls which Z5/Z6/Z6II/Z7 and Z7II are based on date back to the Nkon N80, and then Nikon D100, D7000 series, D600, D750, D780, they are consumer or at most prosumer controls and designed bodies, they are not pro bodies. So yeah people want a half-size pro body like the first ones I listed which are again D200, D300, D300s, D700, D800,D810, D850, as the Z8. So yeah you compared by specs but you left out a lot that set them apart.

@waynerm002 Год назад
It would be cool to see an APSC style pro body on the Z line or they could add the flash sync port in the side port section, like Sony does, making the Z6II the enthusiast camera but I doubt that will happen. The Z8 needs that treatment when it comes out, they could do that on a Z90 though.

you under estimate the power of the dark side, USBC in a pinch being able to charge on the go or charge would shooting or send about is helpful. Good video though, the z series hasn't had the love attachment feels for the most part, hopefully the gen 3s can change that

After I got the Z5 I went and added the Z7 II ti the kit. I gave it a good chance, returned it and instead purchased a D850, and THAT was when I had my "ahh Yes" moment when I put it in my hands, and I save $800. Specs are only good if you use all of them and as a photographer, the D850 wins hands down because it is a solid, robust camera with well thought out ergos that takes Gorgeous images with all that great F glass. I don't like the fact that all my D lenses are useless (except for manual) on the Z bodies. Specs aren't everything and this only feeds into the unsuspecting consumer with a case of GAS. Yes the Z (S) lenses are amazing but too amazing which can be boring at times. Ill take a great F mount lens over a standard Z lens any day because there is a certain look and character I feel Z has lost due to being too good. In my hands when it counts the Z7 II is no match for my D850.

specs are never everything, you need to know how you are going to use your camera and why you want certain features. There hasn't been a "bad" camera made in 10yrs so the only reason camera manufacturers can justify driving people back to the store is specs! I travel...a lot, I hike...a lot, mostly in the middle of nowhere. I own a D850 and it looks like it has been in a washing machine with ball bearings! It is still in perfect condition photographically 🤣 but it looks like it has gone 9 rounds with Mike Tyson and had it's ear bitten off in the last round! I use G and D lenses and you are right the imperfections can be used to creative effect and benefit. Photography is an art not a science and yet everyone gets so caught up in the science of perfection. Guess I'm old fashioned...still it is nice to know that in the future if/when I do need a new camera some great options will be there!

I got my D850 about a year and half ago, after a year being torn apart between it and the Z7 II. Never regretted the decision, love the camera and probably will never sell it, but I'll be blunt: it both cameras were at the same price here in Brazil at the time, I'd have gone with the Z7 II, mainly due to IBIS and access to Z glass - the two things I miss the most. However, for some strange reason, the Z7 II was (and still is) 50% more expensive here than the D850. That was a deal breaker to me... Hell, even the Z6 II was about the same price at the time than the D850. It got cheaper now, but not by much. Now, if you ask me if I were to upgrade my D850 to a Z8, my answer would be no. I'd rather get a Expeed 7-equipped Z6 III for better AF and low-light performance, and keep the D850.

Well fortunately the D850 will last so long that by the time it breaks, there won’t be any dispute! Nikon will have fully developed into the world of mirrorless haha. Give it 500,000 shutter actuations at least 🤪🤪🤪🤪
@PedroLauridsenRibeiro
@PedroLauridsenRibeiro Год назад
@@ZWadePhoto that's yet another reason (among many) why the D850 is a keeper for me. I loathe the idea of programmed obsolescence, and at my use rate the D850 should last me a good few decades. I should be able to fully master it by then... 😝 But seriously, the D850 is like a great but tough teacher: it'll show you with no mercy any flaws in your shooting technique and your lenses, but if you get to use it right and pair it with top-notch glass, man... the results speak for themselves. That's why I prioritize prime lenses like the 105mm f/1.4E and the 28mm f/1.4E - also considering that no such lenses are on the Z roadmap yet, so they're also great long-time investments together with the FTZ adapter.

I am very happy with this camera especially the photos, however my Z5 with IBIS provides smoother handheld video. D780 is great for video clips, and on tripod video providing very pro video for my product videos. Yes. All of the mirrorless camera use. “Electronic View Finder” which is a digital representation of what the sensor sees. This is why you’re able to see you exposure as you modify shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. This is different than an Optical View finder which just shows you the scene without your exposure settings. On mirrorless You can turn off the feature that adjusts exposure however. The Z7 was expected to be the D850 replacement for 3 main reasons: * Almost identical sensor, the main difference that the Z7 sensor needed the AF pixels. The images generally look identical. * Almost identical menus, the Z7 adding some items for mirrorless features. * Almost identical price, the D850 was $3500 when the Z7 was released at $3400 [USD]. The reasons why the Z7 fell short of being a D850 replacement: * One card slot, corrected in the Z7II. * No vertical grip option, corrected in the Z7II. * No Multi-CAM 20K AF module, hopefully resolved with the Expeed7 processor in the Z7III. * No button/dial combo on the top left plate, found in the D850/D810/D800/D700/.../N8008. Hopefully returning in the Z7III. * No illuminated buttons, hopefully added in the Z7III. That's basically it. Everything else is whining...

I’m that type of guy that still exists “at that time” I guess. I also cannot get why a smaller form factor is better? What I really envy with the Z system is the mount and the new line-up of excellent lenses! I only care for image quality and the quality of the optics is no 1 in that category since Nikon haven’t made any progress with their sensors in regards to dynamic range and resolution since the launch of the D850. Maybe a forthcoming Z7 III will change that? If that happens I will get one and hurry to slap a battery grip on it to mitigate the toy-factor (Sony virus).

Spec wise, definitely the Z7II wins on paper. I never owned or tried a D850; however, folks who have and tried to replace it with the Z7II complain that the AF tracking on the D850 is leagues ahead of the Z7II. The only thing I know the Z7II does not do well in is the AF tracking, it is half-baked at best and completely unusable in low light. The other day I I understood from Chuck that people who say they want a D850 replacement are referring to the body size and build quality, in which case I am definitely on that bandwagon because I still don't feel to comfortable with the Z7II's ergos. However, your video brought about a very good argument to wanting a D850 replacement, which is having a KOTH body that rules them all and a jack of all trades. That is not the Z7II as you said, and we do not have that product in the current Z bodies lineup, yet.

Well... they are different. D850 is bigger, feels more rugged and better in the hand and moreover the AF is not in love with backgrounds all the time like the Z6-2. Other than that... I love my Z6-2, but I liked my D850 even more. 😅 As for glass: I'd take the ancient f-mount 150mm Sigma all day over the 105 Z Nikkor. They're not even close (to me). Well, I guess I'm a weirdo anyways. 😅

Expectations, and actual need cases, and system currently owned. How much or less you need mirrorless if at all. I think the D850 is awesome. I am in the camp more likely than not that way vs. a Z7 or Z6. Much more mature and large selection of lenses of the F Nikkor vs. the Z mount. Costs. A used 850 is still less than a Z camera. Not by a ton, but the savings could be applied to the glass which more important anyway. You aren't going to be in bad shape if you go either way. RU-vid hype and BS being what it is. Get what fits you, and stop buying what they tell you to buy.

2:10 Processor power doesn't mean jack shit, when you have programmers humiliating the programming logic "because they know they have a better processor anyways" and end up having worse performance. This is just a general statement, true for all processor comparisons in any hardware. What I mean is, processor difference by itself is not a topic of comparison. You need to show the difference in doing the "same things" and no, different products will never do the "same" thing, so why bother even thinking about the comparison? Waste of time.

I really hate the trend toward mirror cameras in general - They're just fucking annoying to get accustomed to, and quite seriously the lenses available for mirrorless cameras are in short supply, and they really don't have the typical legendary quality of Nikon's countless old DSLR lenses. You can often get a rather old, even ancient but gently used old Nikkor DSLR lens ... and the quality will be 50% better that the currently available lenses for mirrorless. Case in point - - Those two great old de-focus control lenses of Nikon: (Abbreviated DC). The quality is monumentally stellar and ... there is NO real comparison in this day and age, and not in particular because they're DC lenses, but only for the fabulous construction quality like that of an old Sherman Tank.

@scotthullinger4684
@scotthullinger4684 Год назад
@@ZWadePhoto - I'm not talking only about optical quality, but all the rest, how the lens is constructed, many of which nowadays are tinker toys. Furthermore, sharpness is not always everything. That's only a single aspect of image quality. Color fringing can be a bit annoying with some lenses. I've had a small smattering of Nikon lenses, and the best are the 105 mm f/2 DC lens, the 150 mm f/2 DC, the 12-24 f/4 mm dx lens, my 17-55 f/2.8 dx, and my good old trusty 50 mm f/1.8. I sadly discovered that my Sigma lenses are garbage. But I still have a few of them just because I still have them. My old 24-120 f/4 Nikon with a variable aperture is a piece of garbage. The absolute cream of the crop turned out to be my 105mm DC f/2 lens. Wow - one hell of a GREAT portrait lens, and a bonus that it's an f/2 lens. The average person probably can't tell the difference EXCEPT for when examining both my best and my worst lenses mentioned up above. I gladly discovered that one of my OLD Nikkor zoom lenses turns out to be a somewhat coveted lens ... the 70-210mm constant f/4 aperture, which is highly sought after in Japan. The only problem? It has old SLOW auto-focusing technology which can even deplete your camera battery much sooner. Oh yes ... and it has a rotating front element, so you need to twist your polarizer into the sweet spot only AFTER you're sure of where you have focused, or just focus manually.

Just the fact that youtubers to this day compare D850 camera which was made 6-7 years ago with top notch new mirrorless cameras shows how awsome D850 really is. Go with D850 and save yourself tons of money. Bought one last year and have no intention of being sheep buying mirrorless gimmicks.
@ZWadePhoto
@ZWadePhoto 6 месяцев назад
Well, lets not call people sheep for seeking out newer technology. Rather, if someone prefers fun all around (lens shopping, shooting etc) get the D850. If you're brand new to photography or considering this as a career, consider mirrorless because parts availability will probably be better, lenses are generally getting better moving forward, and effort to income ratio is very good with mirrorless since it does half the work for you.
@Marko-od7eb
@Marko-od7eb 6 месяцев назад
@@ZWadePhoto Thank you for your reply. No, Im not new in photography, I make my living of it. I have nothing against people who love the new technology, but let's face it, the market is over-saturated with mirrorless cameras and useless gimmicks. I've seen too many youtubers with affiliate links misleading people they will develop some special skill if they just buy the next Z7II, and if they just add extra cash for that Z9 their skills will be over the top. Truth is 90% of new featuers these new cameras have you don't need. Sure fast auto-tracking is good but how many people will shoot video of F1 cars racing down the track ? Are the new mirrorless lenses better - yes they are. Are mirrorless lenses x2.5 better ? Not a chance in hell ! So why would anyone with right brain buy x2.5 - x3 more expensive lenses along with camera body that is x2-x3 price of D850 for insignificant gains ? For pixel peeping and bragging rights ? And even quality difference is questionable. You put same lens on Z8 and D850 and quality is identical. That's why I used the term "sheep". If you have money to waste, hey knock yourself out and be happy. But 99% of people have to save hard earned money for overpriced cameras with zero difference in image quality output, and if you tell them they will become better photographers because new lenses " does half work for them" you are misleading them.

@@ZWadePhoto two things: you compared the Z7 and the D850 spec sheets but failed to mention two critical things - EVF refresh rate and perhaps the other thing that’s never on the spec sheet which is AF usability. Your points comparison is not weighted correctly as a result. I agree that the Z7 is better than a D850 at a lot of things, but for anyone shooting fast moving objects, absolutely useless.
