When you live on a boat, you learn to get creative when it comes to fixing parts- and this week Nick proves that, with some lateral thinking, you really can fix almost anything! After days of troubleshooting the watermaker problems, Nick and Phil finally cracked onto the ultimate issue, and Nick gets to work fixing it. With a coffee machine part. Because of course he does.

Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.
We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!

I have a suggestion for your potential ice maker future woes. Pick up one of the table top units that make the little sort of ice barrels. They only cost around a hundred bucks or so, require little power to operate, and have been proven to me to be very, very reliable. Onboard ice is certainly a luxury that can be done without, but if you're like me almost a requirement for true happiness at cocktail hour!

Agreed! Speaking as a 20year time served professional crew/superyacht engineer, I am happy to attest to the fact that integral cockpit located ice makers are and will forever be a repeating and never ending pain in the rectum. Your suggestion is entirely rational. Still, at least Nick and Terysa don’t have kids who think it’s a giggle to wrap dinky toy cars with gaffer tape they’ve stolen and post them down all of the vacuum heads, requiring every line from the four heads on the boat, leading poo to the central vacuum/holding tank, to be entirely disassembled to clear the resulting multiple blockages. I sh^t you not. Worse still it was the owner’s kid that did the deed and all that the owner could do, while I was up to my elbows in his family’s faeces, was sit out in the sun on the aft deck nursing a glass of the finest Krug champagne while he bitched constantly over the intercom about both the smell and the delay in departure from the marina. Kept wanting to know why we couldn’t just leave and have me rip a 30m motor vessel to pieces while underway at 35 knots! To be fair, at least the guy’s wife came down below and apologised for both him and the kid’s behaviour, gave the crew a decent night off and took us all out to have an evening off ashore, for which she picked up the tab. I’m not sure if they’re still married, I suspect not.

The WCP D5 is a DC pump using the spherical motor design as developed by Laing. The only moving part in a spherical motor pump is a spherically shaped rotor/impeller unit, which is seated on an ultra-hard, wear-resistant ceramic ball. They are used in irrigation systems and watercooled pc’s and are readily available.

I think the entire water maker should have been replaced. You and Phil obviously tried gallantly to fix anything humanly possible. Can it be a "warrantee" replacement ? You have my deepest sympathy because the described "bodge" was the cause of a cascade failure. Best wishes from Montana

I have the same watermaker and mine doesn't have a secondry strainer. Maybe it needs one for the seawater quality where you are but I doubt that bodged part was factory. Run some SC2 cleaner through it and try again. Do you have a pressure gauge on your accumulator? If so are you delivering the correct pressure to the Clarke pump via the Shurflo pump?

i have never known anyone who bought a spectra watermaker twice. after the first one they all say never again. too finicky and parts are too proprietary. i know watermakers are expensive but for someone like you who lives on the boat 24/7 and in remote parts of the world, i would rip that out of there and buy a unit with more std off the shelf parts that you can get anywhere.

Well most appliances these days are junk, they will brake down quickly (usually less than one year), and I am talking about commercial stuff here which use to be better built but no more! From my experience, early failures are usually a blessing in disguise because they make you aware of the issues and how to fix them!

Boat rule #1... Plan for three times longer/more expensive than you expect. I hear so many horror stories about water makers, I really hope you find a "forever" solution for yours!

Many plastics cannot be glued hence the fitting always leaking, I guess a bad design from the get go.

Wow, the problems stack up.. Nick, it's like you bought a custom RR, but the window broke,(sail ripped out) then no fresh water, then tons of crap left in the water holding tank.( Just looking in your tank, I think it going to be a life time of problem, they should have installed, a one piece, portable plastic, fresh water tank. Not build a tank. In the ship yards defence, the ,ain things breaking were not made by them. They brought the product, the vender's, sold them. Crap. I hope Dolle? Sails, steps up. Sails cut wrong, chaffing lines, lazy jacks, seemed misaligned. Vietnam, needs, to maybe, slow down, have a outside, inspector firm. To check crap off at night...say the customers hire them to watch there back. ... You two should not be going THRU all this...

I need to get more highly complex technical equipment on my boat. My simple uncomplicated systems are far too reliable. I'm thinking a hybrid propulsion drive unit that produces 40 million volts underwater that will enable my dual purpose air conditioning/ice making water purifier to automatically wash my laundry while steering my boat with it's built in autopilot. Probably nothing could go wrong with that.

Love these "this fucked up and we tried x, y and z....it's still fucked but we got a theory and we will continue until it's unfucked"-videos. Sad that you have to deal with it - but it sure is interesting. But it's when it breaks and you fix it, that you learn and build confidence over the whole systems limitation. Keep it up and enjoy the good that's still there. Cheers!

I don't mean to poo poo on watemaker brands, as they all have their strengths and weaknesses. But I hear someone asking "where do I find a replacement Shurflo pump for my spectra" far too often on the cruisernets. I'd definitely buy an entire spare pump assembly!

Would the water maker not be under the manufacturer's warranty and be shaped put for a new one? After all the toot cause would be the improper fitting and repair done to it. I must commend Nick & Teresa on rolling with the punches. I, as a CT Technician, would be fuming over the water maker fiting. That repair is just not acceptable from the tradesperson perspective. It's just not cool.

Is the watermaker under guarantee? It's clearly failled and was not in a fit state when it was fitted, it's probably got other problems that you haven't found yet (not to mention potentially bits of sikaflex inside it). If you can get them to replace it I would, plus I can understand your loyalty to Seawind and it's admirable and whilst you're right that it's not their part it was a part that they fitted to the boat and they QC's the boat prior to delivery and didn't pick it up, Seawind can quite reasonably ask the watermaker guys what they think they're playing at but a good company would take ownership of the stuff they've sent out the door newly manufacutred and sort it out for you...

Welcome to boat ownership. You don't get a boat without any issues. No matter how new it is you will still be fixing stuff. The nice thing is Seawind is fixing everything without having to go through a warranty. My feeling is when they get to the Med. They will have to file a warranty on that watermaker or buy a new one.

Why didn't they finally just cut their (your) losses and replace that watermaker with a better brand or at the very least replace it with another from their stock or the manufacturers stock, although I don't think I would trust that brand again after what you've found. I hope you can get this 'last' item sorted quickly and get on with enjoying your new home.

My basic seawater pro system built from non proprietary parts seems a whole lot less of a pain in the ass. Admittedly I can’t flick a switch to make water, but it’s so simple to install and maintain…

In my experience watermakers and generators are the least reliable systems on board any cruising boat. Spectra stuff is too complicated.

I really admire your candor, and unvarnished POV. That being said, it’s disheartening to see so many problems with a yacht so early in the game. I agree with others that this thing should have been replaced - and should be dumped by the yacht manufacturer in general. The larger liability issues are rather obvious by now… crap is crap!

I've been to Pattaya a couple of times back in my Army days. We started and finished a joint training exercise by unloading/reloading a ship just south of there - the port where the HTMS Chakri Naruebet is moored.. Shenanigans could definitely be found in Pattaya. I assure you, whatever story you have heard is not only true, but possibly worse/better than what you've been told, and can probably be topped if you ask the right person.

Personally, I would have never screwed with the watermaker as much as you have. Though kudos to you for doing your best. Time for a brand new watermaker. I recommend the Cruise RO Water SeaMaker 40. Awesome canvas shade!!! That will be so nice😊

From watching the launching of Ruby Rose II a Seawind Catamaran Vs, The Wynn's new HH Catamaran, just based upon what I've seen as far as quality, Issues, repairs and ease of use I have to go with the HH product! To have spent the amount of money you guys have on the Seawind product and have the issues and quality control problems your having, is totally unacceptable! I realize all new boats have break-in issues, but the number of issues & lack of simple quality control on the Seawind product is a major negative when looking at new catamarans! Hell, you guys should be out sailing and enjoying life, not sitting at a dock pissing away life waiting for all these issues to be correct 6 months into ownership. Hell, the Wynn's are out sailing and enjoying their boat not sitting at a dock waiting for repairs. Just Saying

I look forward to the "final analysis" on the water maker, Nick. When you find a major QC failure in the build of the unit I ( shoddy assembly with substandard parts) become immediately suspicious of the rest of the thing...and I suspect you are going to find a textbook example of the "swiss cheese model of cascading failure" at the end of this...small problems create larger problems and end in the "oh crap" event. In any case, best of luck to you both. I sincerely hope that you will look back on this very trying time as a brief hiccup in a great relationship with your new boat.

The only thing that will happen if your membrane was not pickled correctly is high ppm when the unit finally produces water. Air in the membrane is not an issue as it will get pumped out. Spectra WMs will not put product water into to the tank when ppm are 700-750, this can be over ridden. when my Spectra had a problem and was producing 900 ppm the water was still drinkable without tasting the salt. My Newport 400 was purchased in 2006, call Spectra and ask for the tech guys they are pretty good helping over the phone.

Hello. I did previously say “ why was that not a brass fitting but, I can understand almost the pressure it develops and pumping clean fresh water to your tanks. Not being a boat person , why has that system not got a shut down position that would decrease the pressures to a level of rest , so that one could leave the boat. I think that the fresh water system/pump should be redesigned Yes you need to keep the weight to a minimum, but having water coming in quietly and leaking to the villages is not good . Had you been away for longer your boat could of sunk All in my opinion Wish You Well

If you gave me a Spectra watermaker I would sell it and get a Cruise R.O. unit. Most people with problems have a Spectra.

It is amazing how an issue can be solved by using a part that has nothing to do with the problem. Ingenuity is the mother of invention. Using something that has nothing to do with the water maker can be modified to make due. Good problem solving Captain.

This "Water Maker From Hell" episode suggested to me that there are so many other people who are having days worse than yours. But I can find only one other person who has had a worse day. The others must be hiding! So, kudos to you for showing us your reality. Nick, I did notice the steady hands and mental calmness of a dentist when you were using tools. Believe me I understand with all the money you spent building that boat it shouldn't have flaws and they should use better products on things but like everything we encounter in life it all comes together threw the ups and downs of are successes and failures.

Stressful for luxury life haha I am very impressed with Seawind all things considered. Did you consider changing to the water maker that Gone with wynns is using, they met the developers of that water maker at a boat show and did video on it. That was an awesome water maker they went with, forgot the name.
