Moving Chicks, Emu Surprises, and a BBQ Feast!
Good morning from Mrs. Cog Hill Farm! 🌅 Today’s video is packed with farm adventures as I dive into part two of my morning chores. First up, I'm moving a group of 12 feisty chicks from the brooder to their forever home in the Cog Hill school bus. Trust me, these chicks are ready for their next chapter-even if they don’t make it easy! 🐥
But that’s not all! In exciting news, our emu, Goldie, has finally laid her first egg of the season! 🥚 We’ve been keeping a close watch on her, and I can’t wait to show you where I found it. Could this be the start of a new clutch? We’ll be discussing what to do with the eggs-incubate, leave them, or something else?
Plus, as Jason fires up the grill for game day with his favorite brisket, I sneak in to show y’all what’s cookin'. 🥩🍖 And to top it all off, there’s some sweet time spent with the goats and even a surprise visit from our friendly barn cats, perfectly spaced like they’ve mastered social distancing!

What about numbering the eggs and when/if she lays her third egg…… remove the first so that there are only ever 2 eggs in the nest. Goldie will see eggs but YOU will not be inundated with Emu eggs. I see in the comments, a suggestion of a port’a hut for protection, maybe a good idea for Goldie. I’ve been watching the YT Channel’UselessFarm’ Karen the Emu is laying eggs in their small barn…… I’m not sure but I think the eggs are removed one by one……. Not 100% sure so I’ll check. It’s a problem but I think removing the egg one at a time cd help Goldie. But….. heck, I’m no Emu, egg production expert!!!! I’m just a big lover of Cog Hill Farm and all it comins and goins❤️❤️.

Good morning, your intuition was correct, Emu eggs are so beautiful. Loved the sunset. The colors were beautiful when you were showing the 3 cats. Those chicks did not want to get out of cage, I had to laugh as you were pulling them out, they went running back in. It was funny.

Good morning!! If you take one or some of Goldie's eggs before she finishes her cycle of laying, then she will go start another nest. Once she gets several eggs in there, after two weeks or so, you could start taking out one a day leaving her fewer and fewer. Then you can clean the nest at the end before Nugget gets there.

You should ask Marie at Random Okie farms what she thinks. She raises emus. So she knows the species very well.

I'd say, don't interfere with nature. Last time Nugget proved he would eat and drink when necessary. Emus have done this since time began. He's in a fenced area and protected against predators. As long as he eats and drinks on occasion he will be fine.

I also was tipping my IPad to help you get those chicks to come out of the dog crate. Maybe they were hesitant because they could see the ground below the bus through the floor. My thoughts is the weather and Jason I know the Man was too Upset about his boy last time. His First care is Nuggo and Yes he be a PROUD PAPA if he got babies but it is the getting there part 60 days No Food No water NOPE!! But then I think what we women go through to give Our Men Children. I died with my Son and the Next one he died. Just Crazy Not a problem with Our First Daughter But them Boys!!! LOL

I just love how much this video made me smile. Sorry Brooke, but I was cracking up at those chickens running right back into the crate after you pulled them out! Watching the Emus always warms my heart. Nugget is just SO special! Unless you want to become a breeding farm for Emus, I don't blame you for wanting to remove the eggs. We have to realize it's the same concept of removing chicken eggs. Can you imagine how many chickens they'd have if they allowed all their chickens to sit when they wanted to?

Those Hummingbird moths are really neat to watch them feeding off of flowers. Something I never knew was they come from the dreaded green tomatoe worms that eat our tomatoes. Last yr I started planting and sacrificing one tomatoe plant for them to feed off so I don't step and squish them anymore rather I move them to feed off of the plant. If I had chickens I would prob be letting them feast on some ;)

Emu lay eggs very different from chickens. They set on their legs & as soon as the egg is coming out, they raise their body straight up with head in the air & tail on the ground, still setting on their legs. This way, they place the egg exactly where they want it. Strange to see. But awesome that they place it where they want it. Good luck with whatever your decision is on whether you want to hatch or not. 😊
