I live in Los Angeles and I don't drive by any rules anymore, I am 64 years old and have been driving since 1975 I don't know what the rules are today I never show up to court when I get a ticket, I haven't renewed my license in years I am not paying anything anymore to the DMV. I just get in the car and go and try not to hit anything.

These videos are so so helpful!! I’m deciding between Nairobi and Kigali and your experience and perspective is invaluable.

Thank you for this feedback. Your comment is exactly why we put the videos out. We want to inform people as best we can based on our experience. Nairobi is a bustling city and a who another vibe. Kigali overall is much more laid back, except for the traffic and crazy driving in the city!! sheesh. We hope your decision proves to be the place where you are happiest, most welcome, and most comfortable. Blessings on your journey!

You guys are so cute... one thing we must remember coming from the "West" is that the concept of "timeliness" is different in the Tropics, and there is a different mindset: its relaxed vs. rushing around all the time. We learn to pace ourselves to avoid medical emergencies. Some countries that are closer to the Equator, completely close down businesses during the extreme heat of the day: 12N-2pm go home, Lunch, Nap then resume their work day refreshed. It makes sense. Likewise Customer Service is appreciated and like you stated, (small) Tipping is appreciated & expected.

It's always going to be the peace for me!! LOL. I can totally appreciate a siesta and a laid-back lifestyle that reduces stress and the risk of heart disease. Is it possible to couple that with keeping our word and honoring an expectation though? I think it also helps to reduce stress and frustration if someone is ready and available at the agreed-upon time so that we can both keep other commitments and plan our day in a way that frees up our time for other things. But I do appreciate the sentiment and your comment. Much Love!

Hello! My understanding is that Rwandan constructions don't install P-traps under the sinks and toilet groundwork. This is normally done specifically to prevent odors from coming up. Also, what do you think about a white man moving to Rwanda? I'm Canadian born but I've had about all I can take of the West right now. I'd like to sell my townhouse here and buy 3-4 properties. 1 to live in and the others to rent for income. I would then spent my time helping and being part of my community in whatever way I can contribute. Is this crazy?
@jwcouture7742
@jwcouture7742 5 месяцев назад
After a few more inquires with friends in our x-pat family there we learned that it is a plumbing issue of a part not being installed. Apparently, it is not something that is regulated or enforced so it is not mandatory to install the piece that prevents gasses and odors from backing up and coming out of the pipe rather than being directed out of the house, however, this CAN be requested prior to, during or after construction. We had friends who had someone come back in and install the needed part and the problem was resolved forever. For what it's worth I take no issue with a white person moving to Rwanda to contribute to its progress, development, and community as long as they don't go with a white savior or missionary mindset. However, I am not a native Rwandan so my opinion on the matter is insignificant to that of a countryman. I don't think your desire is crazy at all, as long as your motives are genuinely pure and your move is in the best interest of the community with which you hope to become a part.😁

@@jwcouture7742 Thanks for the reply! I know what you mean about the savior complex lol. I'm more of a "fit in and help out when it's wanted" kinda guy. Since replying to you I've seen other videos that lay out the honest truth mostly good but also a few challenges, some of which you've mentioned. (especially for someone used to the Western pace. lol) It's nice to see that you both have made a home for yourselves In Rwanda (lovely couple btw) and I'll definitely consider visiting before too long! Take care!

We’re trying to be patient and get used to it where necessary, where it it intolerable we politely will bring it to someone’s attention. We can all do better, grow and improve thus Africa is capable of the same. We just have to ask for better.

Your videos should be watched by those wanting to move to. Rwanda. I detected no untruths while comparing my own experiences here. Re smells coming from toilets, sinks in bathrooms. I'm in Kibagabaga an established neighborhood and recently started having unpleasant odor from floor drain. My Landlord cleaned drain and treated it with something and smell went away. I notice the smell comes on strong around 10pm on both here and last rental residence. Still 8 months in I'm happy with my decision to move here and will work with city officials to improve those issues that impact quality of life.

About the odor in the house it's because it's a new house and the smell it's of local building materials. But as u spend more time in the house and clean it more I promise it will disappear by some little time. I love u and it's a pleasure having u in my country

Hello and thank you! I appreciate your comment. When we say there is a smell it is only from the sink and toilet at times, not the entire house thankfully. So, are you saying that the smell coming from the new plumbing pipes will eventually go away?
@bowgate3817
@bowgate3817 Год назад
The smell does not disappear. You get used to it over time.
@ReclaimingOurIdentity
@ReclaimingOurIdentity Год назад
We have now learned that the smell comes from the septic tank odors backing into the hose through the plumbing when it is improperly done. No one has to “get used to it over time”, thankfully. It can be fixed 😊. A good plumber with engineering know how inexpensively rectify the situation in most cases. We have a few acquaintances who completely solved the issue of septic fumes. The plumber redirected the flow of one or two pipes with a device to direct the oder/fumes away from the house rather than inside.

@@ReclaimingOurIdentity Yes! And even in the US with city plumbing...plumbers take short cuts or not paying attention...fumes will happen but having them away helps!

Traffic? They clearly never been to L.A or Toronto
@kaiapapaya
@kaiapapaya 2 месяца назад
We have been to L.A., actually and are very familiar with traffic being from Atlanta and DC. But in the stated cities there are plenty of traffic guidelines: stop lights, signs warnings and enforcement of such. Our experience in Rwanda also speaks to the lack of traffic laws and driving courtesy not just the volume of vehicles.

What part of Kigali do you live in? Also is the rainy season very bad? Oops... One other thing can you transfer your personal vehicle from the States? Kudos to you guys, and be Blessed🙏💪💪👍👍 I plan to visit Rwanda this fall in the U.S. Thanks for all the good Info.
@ReclaimingOurIdentity
@ReclaimingOurIdentity Год назад
Hi! Ask away! Its never a bother. Its why we do what we do! Answer 1:Gacuriro is the sector in the Gasobo district near Vision City 2: I didn’t think rainy season was very bad. It was consistent and predictable because it rained every day sometimes for a very short while sometimes a little longer once or twice all night, but then not during the day or quite a bit of the day and no rain at night, but mostly a shower would come and then dry up, and the rest of the day is sunny, kind of like Florida weather. Question 3: Yes, you can pay to have your car shipped from the US and pay Customs taxes on it if it’s brand new when it arrives at the port in either Mombasa or Tanzania

@ReclaimingOurIdentity
@ReclaimingOurIdentity Год назад
It’s not just about the traffic it’s about the chaos and lack of curtesy in the driving. In the states we stop at stop signs, stay in our lanes instead of driving in the middle of the road and yield to the right of way.
