Even here in the UK it is extremely hard to keep greenhouse temperatures in check by ventilation and misting alone. I would be inclined to use a light coloured shade cloth, especially with a polytunnel as some of the heat evolved at a shade cloth will radiate and conduct into the greenhouse. The more you can reflect the light rather than absorbing it the better.
@DurzoBlunts

University of Florida recommends (for tomatoes production atleast) a 2 tier cloth system. One at the top of the house that is 30-40% and another resting across trellises that is 10-20%.
@ColinMill1
@ColinMill1 Год назад
@@DurzoBlunts Thanks for info. That sounds like a very reasonable scheme. We had some days in the UK this summer where a single 40% cloth was not really enough, though my view might be warped by having to install vent control wiring in the greenhouse during one such episode 🙂

May I ask how hot it gets during the summers in the South of the USA? I move to Cyprus in December of 2020 and during the summer of 2021, our summer temperatures exceeded 45 degrees Celsius! I spent that summer observing to see what can stay alive (not much!) but mainly just planning what I am going to do this summer, to try and maximize the number of species I have by autumn, this year. Many people don’t bother to try and grow anything until winter is approaching again, as we don’t have any frost or really cold temperatures over winter, so they just keep growing then. But Summer becomes like a dead, winter season is, in countries where you get snow. But I’m stubborn; I don’t like people telling me what to do! Lol! So I’m going to see if I can sort something out!
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 года назад
It gets to 40c here in my part of Texas and throughout the southern US. Putting up shade cloth will help a lot with keeping vegetables alive in the hot summer. It helps us out a lot.
@DurzoBlunts

Florida here, we get a wonderful bout of high heat and humidity. My part I get no hotter than 35c and about ~75% humidity for 9 months out of the year.

I just transplanted to Texas on 2 acres and neighbors have warned us about deer when I told them we were going to plant a garden. We thought about getting a deer fence for our back corner lot but are now considering a greenhouse. Are you happy with your greenhouse or do you wish you had chosen a poly carbonate greenhouse instead?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
We are happy with it so far. It cost a lot less than a polycarbonate structure. I have fencing up as well but the one thing that keeps them away is my dog. He patrols all night and all day.

Deer fencing?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
Our dogs are outside dogs. Deer fencing is a challenge. Deer can standing jump 8ft and running jump over 12ft. If they want in, they will get in. The only deer fence I have heard working well is a double fence. 1 tall outer fence and a fence or visual barrier about 4ft inside of that.

How do you deal with no fruit set because its 80 at night
@CountryLivingExperience

First fully ventilate it. Second, plant the right veggies for your zone. That sounds hot! Peppers, eggplant, okra, melons, etc. will set at that temp.

So question about pollinators and greenhouses. Do you find it a non-issue (especially in winter) or do you have to take special steps to insure access is available. Thanks
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
I don't have much fruiting in the winter. The only things that are growing are leafy greens and root veggies so no need for the pollinators. If I need to, I hand pollinate.

@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 9 месяцев назад
@@treypitchford1516 Mine is a 20ft wide and my shade cloth is 23ft wide. It just needs to cover the top portion for that strong summer sun. In the winter, you want a bit more sun in there (if you don't take it off in winter). I would say that maybe a 14ft wide one would work.
