The filament backup feature has been such a great way for us to use up all those offcuts of filament we had lying around, basically turning something that was fairly useless to us into a money saving material on our design prototyping!
We have only tested it with PLA as that's mainly what we use, but if you have ever tried this trick with other materials we’d love to know what results you got!
We made this project using some of the awesome stuff below and you should too because it's awesome..

Purges here feel very wasteful
@playconveyor
@playconveyor 4 месяца назад
Yeah the purge is still a thing but in this instance you could set them to as low as possible because color bleed wouldn’t matter to minimise it even more! Thanks for watching!! 😀
@thomaswiley666
@thomaswiley666 4 месяца назад
So how much was purge? Yes, I get that you are using filament that may or may not be used, because it is considered "scrap." But I wonder with a decent, judiciously placed run-out sensor could do a better job of minimizing waste, albeit at the cost of your time to re-thread another spool.
@playconveyor
@playconveyor 4 месяца назад
A small purge per each spool change, just to run the new filament through the nozzle, which is tiny, there might even be a way around it, we will have to do some digging! The convenience is the biggie for us, we can just chuck four in and use all the tiny end of reel bits up without having to put too much effort in! I’ve always wanted to try filament splicing too for offcuts!
@monkeywrench1951

Depending on the filament brand, some are just tied to the end of the role’s core and just stop the machine, hopefully without too much damage to the AMS’s brittle inner mechanism. Watching this, I am amazed nobody has knocked out bambulab’s X1C from the top yet since it came out almost two years ago.
@p0ppytears
@p0ppytears 24 дня назад
You don't need an AMS to use all your filament and not be wasteful. You're not saving any money, you bought the filament.
@slothy89uni
@slothy89uni 13 дней назад
Agreed, all you need is a filament runout sensor, with a pause routine, and manually load the next spool. All the AMS achieves here is convenience. As for the cost though, if you just throw away the scraps then you could argue you’re only getting say 950g for your $20, as the rest is just wasted. It’s not so much saving money as it is making better use of it. Either way, you’re not paying the AMS off at all.
@TheRealMisterJ
@TheRealMisterJ 8 дней назад
No, you don't need an ams for that Ofcourse. But when I have long prints that I start before bed or before work, I can't throw in a small roll that'll run out and have the printer idle all day until I get back. Before I got an ams I had tons of almost empty rolls laying around I just never had time to use, now I run through everything without waste...

@joasf3980
@joasf3980 3 месяца назад
You can basically do this with any printer with a filament runout sensor. Just put in the next spool manually when the filament is used up. A little bit more manual work but saving even more money because you don’t need an AMS

I personally get about 20g left on each spool I use. I take each of those leftover from their spool and store them properly (thrown in a random cardboard box) to use them with my 3D pen OR as little pegs to assemble multiparts prints

Pro tip: This can also also be done on ANY machine that has a runout sensor! Just load the filament one spool after the other. The waste is minimal and the results are very similar. Hope this has helped. 🙂

So if I add a runout sensor to my Ender three, can I use one of these?
@8675309eahine
@8675309eahine 2 месяца назад
@@Kingofcrazieness No unfortunately. You’d need to be using a Bambu Lab printer. The AMS does it automatically, the runout sensor will just pause the printer and allow you to swap filaments manually.

@playconveyor
@playconveyor 4 месяца назад
Thanks!! The cardboard spools is a really tricky one.. you are right, I believe the dust residue they leave behind is one of the concerns! We personally occasionally use the odd cardboard spool in there but that’s our choice and we will deal with any issues if they come up! The rings are a great idea but still not quite there, which ones do you use?
