Welcome to the RU-vid channel, Time Series for Data Science.
Here's a question:
Are you expected to produce forecasts and predict trends at work, but you didn't really learn anything useful in your time series course? Did you really understand it?
More specifically:
- Do you know how to do seasonal adjustment? Do you even know what it is?
- What if your data are in messy shape. Do you have access to tools for wrangling and cleaning data?
- How about web scraping data from internet sources?
- Can you efficiently use R to analyze, forecast, etc time series data
- Were you taught how to use the frequency domain as a key part of understanding and analyzing data, or was the frequency domain an afterthought or not covered at all?
- Do you know how to assess whether an existing trend should be predicted to continue or whether caution should be used in forecasts?
- Do you really understand AR models or are they just sort of a black box to you?
- Do you know how to use tools that would help you decide whether to use a seasonal model and/or include a unit root in models?
- Do you know how to use predictor variables to help forecast some variable such as sales?
- Did you learn how to use neural network methods to forecast time series?
WHAT? You don't know this stuff? It's important!!
In this channel we have provided you with over 80 instructional videos designed to help you REALLY learn to analyze time series data.
````````````````````
• The videos are made by teaching award winning professors who teach in the applied statistics/data science master’s programs at SMU.
• There’s a huge need for data analysts who know how to analyze time series data, produce forecasts, assess trends, and so forth.
• The problem is that there has not been a time series book that really addresses the needs of the applied data analyst.
• Existing books tend to just be cookbooks with no real teaching, or they get bogged down in mathematics and lose sight of the forest for the trees.
• We have written a new book we’re proud of that we believe fills a niche and truly prepares students to analyze time series data on the job.
• In fact, we know that it does because we have students who have told us exactly that.
• The book is Time Series for Data Science: Analysis and Forecasting by Woodward, Sadler, and Robertson.
• It doesn’t require calculus but at the same time provides a serious presentation of the topics.
• Most of the videos in this channel are accessible via QR codes in the book and were recorded by the authors to reinforce topics covered in the book.
• While these videos provide hands-on training in a wide variety of time series topics,
clearly viewing the videos WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MATERIAL IN THE BOOK provides a much better understanding of the topics.
• The videos are arranged in playlists associated with each chapter in the book.
• We suggest that you start by checking out the playlist: Working with data collected over time which are supplementary to Chapter 1) .
• These videos provide instructions for loading the easy to use and powerful R time series package tswge, and also discuss
o downloading data from the internet,
o imputing data,
o wrangling, and cleaning data,
o web scraping and more.
• Check out these videos and we think you’ll begin to see why we claim this collection of videos and the book are uniquely designed for the working data analyst.
We hope you enjoy the channel, subscribe to the channel, and consider buying the book. It's a great resource book and it's very readable.
