Having the right tool for the job at Hand often times is underrated. It is a game changer if you have the right tool.

Finally a Friday "you need this tool" segment that didn't cost me any money! Of course that is only because I already have a large weatherpack connector kit on the shelf in the shop....

Yeah this tool is awesome. I used to just use pliers or regular crimpers and it got the job done but it was a pain to do and I was always questioning the connection. This tool is crazy awesome and easy to use. Definitely one for the tool box!

Nice tool with the connector. However I can guarantee you that over time plastic will break down. The end all be all connector is the cannon plug. It's a male/female connector that threads together. The pins are soldered to the wires. This is the connector used in Aviation atleast when I was in the Navy and worked as an Aviation Electrician that's what we had. You can buy them with flanges to mount them to a fire wall and you can then just plug-in your harness. They can also be safety wired to never come loose. Hands down best connector but they are expensive. I like the idea just thought I would inform you of something that is a bit better. Also they are an aluminum body with a silicone type center material not sure what it is. 100% water proof and you can pin and depin over and over again

CW Chops & Rods cannon plugs were a nightmare to deal with in Iraq! They don't play well with sand at all and trying to re-pin the wires into a new plug body is enough to give a guy a case of Tourette's syndrome. I will agree they have their place but that place isn't in the sand and grit.
@industrialpalletworx3548
@industrialpalletworx3548 7 лет назад
Im sure that can happen. Ive personally repinned hundreds of them working in AIMD on the USS Abraham Lincoln. I was in the electric shop. It just takes practice when you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. I could see sand and grit creating issues I've never dealt with that issue

Astro Pneumatic sells a decent starter kit. Part# 9478 for $96 gets you some decent ratcheting pliers, a release tool, and a good assortment of connectors to get your feet wet.

I must admit that I've been crimping and soldering connectors a lot... But when you have the right crimping tool for your terminals, you can trust that they are 110% connected and will never fail! Also soldering will weaken the joint because it's more prone to breaking the wire if you wiggle it too much...

Great connector system: Delphi Packard weather pack. I won't disagree with you. But!! Even better. Deutsch (pronounced DOITZ) MUCH easier to crimp, connections are vastly more secure and sealed AND far easier to modify if you so choose. IMO. Good vid btw!

Do you know connector like this for large gauge wire that would run to a fuse panel like 4 gauge? I am in the middle of a swap and would like to have a connector in the middle of the wire so I dont need to need to unbolt the fuse box to get access to the bolt for the wire when ever the harness needs to be removed for servicing the car.

The Delphi weather pack connector is Ok. Like it will get the job done. But in comparison to sonething like the Deutsch DT series connectors, they are utter junk. They are an absolute pain in the arse to assemble and terminate. And are no where near as reliable as they should be. (same deal with metri-pack) Its a hassle to individually install each seal onto the wire. And its a hassle to have to do 2 stages of crimping to first crimp the wire then the seal. And its a super big pain in the arse when you need to depin them. In contrast the DT connector has none of those issues. For a cheap, easy, readily availble to use plug, i dont think you can go past the Deutsch DT Plug. And no, i dont work for Deutsch. But i am a professional Auto-Electrician and have to do this stuff every day. I know which plug I'd rather use.
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 7 лет назад
I could see that. Very few have to install them for a living though.
@BramBiesiekierski
@BramBiesiekierski 7 лет назад
The Fab Forums Yeah. If its just a hobby car car, and your only doing a couple of plugs here or there. Use whatever you already have the tooling for. But to the people that are specifically gonna purchase a set of crimpers and connector bits. Then you may aswell use something better than Weather Packs. There cant be a whole heap of price difference with the tooling or components (non genuine) between the types of plugs. Its just the ease of use that you can improve on.
@KiloWattRC
@KiloWattRC 6 лет назад
I agree Deutsch is better, weather pack, metric pack are ok but I find them to bulkly and the pins are cheaply made. A official Deutsch crimper will run around 300$. Its worth the money, there are knockoffs online for about 30$.

Another nice installment in the You Need This Tool lineup. I've never bought these connectors separately, but I've seen them. I'm pretty sure a J&S Safeguard I installed on one of my old turbo cars had the same connectors. On a side note, you're great in front of the camera, Kyle... very entertaining, especially when you ask questions to the other guys on the set. 😉😂👍 Excellent editing, too. Watching 200 of these this year is going to be easy. Rainy all weekend, more time to work in the garage. 👍
