Premium alternatives works like a charm ... get a premium one and re do this episode you'll be happy and people will understand the real benefits of this tool instead of trolling about failed attempt

I like the failed attempt....just keeping it real. At the end of the day I can make these videos look anyway I want. I could have said nothing about me having issues with this tool and edited it like the tool was awesome, but that wouldn't be the truth and I like to keep it real with you guys. If I have some kind of issues I want to show, I have nothing to hide. I know these things are known to work well, just not in this particular case for what ever reason.

Nuts come in various amounts of hardness. The nut is often labeled with a hardness symbol stamped right into the nut. The nuts that get the most rusty and are hardest to get off, are typically exhaust system nuts, and these are typically nuts with only a mild degree of hardness. So they should be easier to cut through with a nut cutter, or simply a cold chisel and a hammer.

@reccothomas1689

My thing is this. Why not design the tool so that it splits the nut in half on both sides? Plus, it should have a better threading chamber to prevent damaging the tool causing it to seize. PowerBuilt makes a Nut Splitter that splits the nut from the other end, so you should do a review on their product. Maybe it's designed better, but I still feel that the nut should be split in half from both sides. I also feel that you should use a powered drill instead of a rachet.

Lube dude, you cannot properly bust a nut without lube... ;) Seriously, i have found liberal high pressure lube or anti-seize on the tool threads is a must. I have had a set of 3 from Lisle Tools for about 30 years, super helpful in the right situation. Grade 8 or hard nuts split easier than grade 2, 3 or 5. Also partially split the nut, then turn tool 90-180 degrees and finish splitting, taking care to not damage the stud threads, works like a champ. Cute kid, from experience, you are going to become the great protector very soon as she grows up and boys become a bigger presence in her life.

Yes. I've seen hack sawing the nut from the side. but some times you don't have room for a hack saw....or Dremel. and you risk cutting the threads.

My steering wheel nut holds the world 🌎 on its axis. When I was changing steering wheels, I couldn't take ANY chances messing up those threads, I wish I never used so much force on a puller, I think I messed up a wiper stalk, anyway, slowly grinding that nut off with a dremel 🎉 I wish I did that FIRST! Micro engraving bits, etc. I almost bought a nut buster, I'm going to pass

That type of nutspllitter always gives trouble of some sort. I found that they work best by tightening them up and then giving then a tap on the end before further tightening and further tapping until the nut splits. Otherwise use an impact wrench. After getting through about five of them over the years I now just use an air chisel from the start, still have a couple of nutsplitter's in the tool box one with a bend and the other still in good shape but that due to little use
@alcyr5655
@alcyr5655 7 лет назад
It's a tool that will make, or break your will to live another day. I'll admit I bought a cheap model years ago. Worked OK on the first exhaust manifold nut, the second nut, the threads piled up on the splitter. Got pissed off, couldn't release the nut splitter. Got a hammer and started beating on the nut splitter back and forth. Saw movement, but exhaust stud broke flush with cylinder head. It does have it's place and time where you can't get in with a die grinder, with a death wheel.

what these tools are great for is stuff like one time use power steering fitting and other softer and thinner metal nuts, I've always had decent results although the two nut splitters i Ihave both have the cutter on the side you put the wrench on and where annoyingly costly.

This tool is for people that don’t know how to use a torch to heat up the screw to let go of the rust. Or don’t know what a grinder is. You will damage the thread cutting it with a grinder or this, but will save money on tools which are one time use pretty much and are third party invented gimmick that does not always work. Why did you not put the screw thread to hold in place. It was unrealistic as the splitter would start to twist if it was loose making this whole process stupid in real life. Useful? No, even your demonstration proved the tool is crap brand new. Edit: there’s already an alternative, it’s called a hammer, torch and a scorper.

LOL Throwing the kiddo in the intro mind #^*%* me for a second there..... well done sir (or "Daddy" in her case). Got two kiddo's (around same age) I'll be sure to tell... hell Ill sub just for support (why not). I use a impact of all things to bust a few nuts (no pun)... seriously though, impact and done... hits it so quick that the nut pops-"splits" quick as shit. I use cheap ass ones (got a bunch of them expecting breakage) and been lucky one hasn't broke yet doing it that way. When I purchased them I figure if they could take one stubborn nut off it would be worth to me. lol Nothing more I hate than things that won't come off-holding ya up ... so they been a life-head ache saver many times for sure.

After you split one side of the nut. You suppose to split directly on the other side of the nut. And it will easily come off. Also my nut splitting tool actually has the blade going down instead of the blade being on the bottom. Which is better than the one that has the blade on the bottom.

A heavy amount of anti-sieze should be applied to the cutting edge as well as the threads inside, also an impact gun will hammer right threw a nut with less galling to the tool and an audible crack to the nut when its threw. Snap on makes a nice peice called the NC52.

I have been a mechanic for 25 years and I can honestly say I've never used one. I usually use a cut off wheel or air saw to make a score line then I use a air hammer with a chisel to finish it off. I do it on 2 sides of the nut if I can get to it.

I always wished tools like this, with threaded parts, had acme threads and a good heat treatment. Instead they almost always have small, fine threads and things like this happen. I know the more threads the greater the surface area but the threads don't have enough support behind each peak. Plus the metal itself usually isn't tough enough either.

I've had a few times where I stuck one on a extension and fed it in where a cutter wouldn't go and used a impact , worked like a charm. I think the speed of the impact is the ticket or I have just been crazy lucky as all get up. I use crazy cheap ones also and have been lucky enough not to break one yet (key word), I figure if it takes one stubborn nut off where there is no room and then breaks ... its "worth" to me. lol I've used them as half azzed wrenches to break rounded nuts also... tightened er on there for a good bite and cracked them loose. :)

lube the treads of the tool before trying to split the nut. also they come in different sizes for that nut you should have probably used the bigger one. I was building a electrical crimper for battery cables and large gauge splice connections, and found that at oriellys last night $7.99 so I scrapped the other project. If you round off the chisel edge that then becomes the perfect crimper in a tight spot. I have to replace battery cables on diesels and cars all the time and it will make quick work of it verses a hammer crimper or those long bolt cutter looking crimpers.

From my experience with these they work best if you tighten and tap with a hammer, doing this sequence several times until you see deformation of the nut. This is usually enough to free it up where it can be removed with a wrench. Sometimes you may have to go two or three places around the nut to free it up enough so that it can be removed. You don't normally need to actually break the nut, just deform it so that the rust bond is broken between the nut and bolt. The impact from the hammer also helps to break the rust bond. If the nut does require breaking just do the tighten tap, tighten tap method until the nut breaks to keep from breaking the tool.
@stever5887
@stever5887 5 лет назад
Yes, what you said plus several generous squirts of penetrating fluid to dissolve the corrosion. Good tip; it also pays not to overload the tool in the first place. I don't think the Kylester read the directions before he used it or he'd have known he was trying to crack a nut that was too large for the tool.
@aliwilson6005
@aliwilson6005 6 лет назад
Dude, you're supposed to let the sharp side bite into the nut slightly to the side, so it's cutting at around a 45ish degree angle with reference to the stud. Chomping straight down onto the nut is basically just pressing it into what is an almost flat surface :)

Two things. First coat the threads on the splitter with anti seize because friction causes tremendous heat. Second I would never use an expensive ratchet wrench or a standard ratchet for this. Use a breaker bar if you have the space. No point in stripping the gears on a ratchet or ratchet wrench.
